Isnt sorghum a millet?
Hey Michael nice video! I learned a lot from this, but i'm a bit confused. You said that by inoculating a new production block with a G1 production block the yield of the G2 block is less abundant and it make sense, though i don't understand why you don't go past G2 when transferring grain to grain. Isn't the mycelium the same ? Thanks❤
I like the edited content. Great info in a shorter, more watchable format
Is 4 hours of sterilisation really necessary, that long?
Yes
Sterilizing millet bags takes 3 to 4 hours because the bags contain a large mass of grains, which slows down the penetration of heat and makes it more difficult to remove contaminants. A bag often contains several kilos of grains, and the heat takes time to reach the inside of the bag.
@ Thank you!
Thanks Michael, I've grown my first few types of oysters and lions mane successfully after seeing some of your southwest mushroom videos. Looking forward to any new videos you post on mycology
I once knew a guy who used coffee grounds
Do you experience slower growth by not simmering the millet for 10 minutes? I’ve used your method by soaking for 12-24 hours before sterilizing and my growth is extremely slow.
Could be too wet, drier is better than wetter when it comes to grains
@ thanks for the tip!
Do you take orders for your harvested lions mane, shakti mushrooms as well as oyster mushrooms. I’m in Florida. Yours really looks delicious 😊
Top video
idek what bro is saying rn lmao, but im listening.
So of i want a 6lb grain bag i would do appx 3.72lb of grain and 2.28lbs of water,, i have been struggling with the correct moisture content in my grain bags,,, i truly appreciate your videos, they are some of the best,, thanks for all the inspiration 😊
I want to know too. He said 38% if 6 pounds to be water. So to ke we do 6 x 38% = 2.28 pound. But others are saying you do 1000g plus 380g water is 38% but 1380 x 38% = 524. So which one is it.

Greetings 👋🏽 I am currently looking into a solution, thank you for your patience!
Hi Mike, wow, I never realized how much work it takes to grow mushrooms!! I would like to support your work, do you sell kits? I used to get shiitake kits through Fungi Perfecti in Shelton Washington, since covid, they no longer sell them. I’m really enjoying your channel!! Hoping you can guide me in the right direction if you don’t sell kits, if you do, is there a link? Bless your heart brother, the way you explain it, makes it easy to understand!! Thank you so much for sharing!! 👍🏽💯❤️ from Washington state 🇺🇸
Hi Hector! Thank you so much for your kind words-I’m really glad you’re enjoying the channel and finding the explanations helpful! Yes, we do offer high-quality mushroom kits, including shiitake, and I’m in the process of rebuilding the Southwest Mushrooms website for an upcoming launch to make it even easier to explore our products. It’s been quite a journey, and a lot has been learned along the way, including navigating some recent challenges. Those experiences ended up strengthening our approach, and I’m grateful for the lessons learned. Feel free to check back soon or let me know if you’d like a direct link once we’re live. Thanks again for your support and for being part of the community! Best, Michael 🍄🙏🏽✌🏽
@ yes !! I’m very much interested, however, I didn’t notice any links in the description. I’m an old fart, hoping that you can forgive me 😁, I’ll surf your RUclips channel until I can find it. Thank you so much once again!!🙏🙏. Strength and honor my friend be well 👍🏽👍🏽💯💯❤️❤️
Hey Hector! No worries at all-I appreciate your interest! You can check out our website at southwestmushrooms.com. I’ll make sure to include links in the descriptions moving forward to make things easier to find. Thanks for the support and kind words. Strength and honor to you, my friend! Best, Michael
Sorghum seeds are available here and they're cheap too. But they easily get molds if they get wet
That’s an important point - keeping things clean and dry is crucial for successful grain spawn! 🍄📈🌱👌🏽
Super 🎉
Thank you 🙏🏽
This guy made me grow mushrooms I never regret it, it may not have been that successful coz it's hard for me to get sawdust But I will go back to it whenever I had a chance coz I really enjoy doing it. From creating LC then preparing, LC to agar, preparing the grain then agar to grain, preparing the substrate then grain to S2B until fruiting then repeat the cycle
Hey Majketu01! I’m so glad to hear you got into mushroom growing and enjoyed the process! It can be tricky to find the right supplies, but don’t let that stop you. There are a lot of creative ways to source materials like sawdust, and once you get it down, the cycle becomes so rewarding. Keep at it, and let me know if you ever need tips or ideas. Happy growing! 🍄📈🌱
I love this journey and I enjoy the videos
Thank you 🙏🏽 I appreciate you!
Hi Mike, I’m new to your channel and I’m really fascinated, can you tell me why UV lights are used on mushrooms? What will I discover or what does it tell me about the fluorescence of the mushrooms, is it toxic? I’m loving your channel and content. FYI I’m really green when it comes to mushrooms!!😇 hoping you could help me? Strength and honor be well!! 👍🏽💯❤️ from Washington state 🇺🇸
Hey there! Welcome to the channel, and thanks for tuning in! I’m glad you’re enjoying the content - and I’m more than happy to help you dive into the world of mushrooms. UV lights are a fascinating tool in mycology, especially for research and understanding mushroom biology. When UV light is applied, certain fungi fluoresce, giving off a glow that can reveal details about their structure or the presence of specific compounds. For example, some types of mushrooms contain compounds that naturally fluoresce under UV light - think of it as a unique way to identify or study the species. This fluorescence isn’t harmful or toxic; rather, it’s more like a “signature” that certain mushrooms have, which can be helpful for identification or just to admire as part of the mushroom’s unique characteristics. Since you’re just starting, you’re in for an exciting journey. Mushrooms are endlessly fascinating, and there’s so much to explore! Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions - the mycology community here is supportive, and I’m here to help along the way. Strength and honor to you too, and be well!
Such a well rounded and information dense video. Thank you. Amazing grooves❤️

I want to start growing my own mushrooms at home, such as shiitake (lentinus edodes), lion's mane (hericium erinaceus) and reishi (ganoderma lucidum), but I don't want to use tree trunks so as not to harm the environment. What are the best substrates for growing them in bags?
Grain seed can be used. Also a lot of mushroom companies near cities gather local coffee shop used coffee, as it usually goes to the garbage dump unused
That’s a great question! Growing mushrooms like shiitake, lion’s mane, and reishi at home without using tree trunks is definitely possible, and there are eco-friendly substrate options for bag cultivation. For shiitake, a popular choice is a mix of hardwood sawdust (from sustainably sourced wood) and a small amount of bran for added nutrients. Lion’s mane and reishi also thrive on hardwood sawdust, but you can add materials like soy hulls, wheat bran, or rice bran to enrich the substrate. These substrates are environmentally friendly and work well in bags. Just make sure to sterilize or pasteurize the substrate before inoculation to help your mushrooms grow successfully. Best of luck with your cultivation! 🍄✌🏽🙏🏽

Fabulous set-up, very interesting to see. Distracting soundtrack to the video, the sound of Michael's voice was fading in and out.
