Welcome, my name is Xavier! I am a HVAC Technician and Installer. Based out of Georgia, I work residential for the most part. I got into the trade in my late 20’s. I’m not perfect and I make mistakes. My goal is to obtain as much information as I can about HVAC & share my journey of growing and learning to become a better tech

I have a question for you. My Rheem 4 ton heat pump system is 5 years old and sometimes when i run heat it smells like spoiled milk but it doesn't do that all the time. I was told to get those charcoal filters which i have been using but again the smell comes back once in a while only when heater is running. I have had a few hvac techs come look at the system and they do not know the cause of this other than recommending that i use charcoal filters. What do you think?
@@YoDawg-v6l did they present pictures of the interior of your ductwork and air handler? There could be some debris on your emergency Heat strips possibly..How does your return and supply plenums look? How does the blower wheel look? Are they dirty with a lot of biological growth? There could be a dead rodent. I’ve seen that before many times. Also check you ductwork for leaks Hope this helps
@@XaviersHVAC_Content Never received any photos or video of the system. This house is all brand new built 5 years ago. The return air unit is super clean exterior and area its located in is super clean on the other side of the wall from my computer where i am replying from. I have not personally opened the return air unit but i can to check for those issues. My first thought would be mold due to the smell but the techs said they did not see any moisture or mold. We def do not have a rodent problem here thank the lord..lol
@@YoDawg-v6l I wouldn’t open the air handler due to high voltage ⚡️ I would definitely have a tech check it out and present photos or videos if possible. Especially for the emergency heat strips. Sometimes they do give off a smell but that’s usually a burning smell that happens on new installs. Best of luck
@@XaviersHVAC_Content Thank you i will make call to get another tech onsite
Rather than dismantling the fan just follow the wires outside to the cap or contactor and check from there. My tech showed me easy way to check compressor. Right or wrong?
Its not heating

A polarized filter for your HVAC system offers several benefits, enhancing both air quality and system performance. Here are the main advantages: 1. Improved Air Quality • Enhanced Particle Capture: Polarized filters use an electrostatic charge to attract and trap smaller particles like dust, pollen, pet dander, mold spores, and smoke that standard filters might miss. • Removes Odors and VOCs: Many polarized filters can capture volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and odors, improving indoor air quality. 2. Efficient Filtration • High Efficiency with Low Airflow Restriction: Unlike some high-efficiency filters (e.g., HEPA), polarized filters maintain strong filtration performance without significantly impeding airflow, ensuring optimal HVAC performance. 3. Energy Savings • By allowing better airflow while maintaining high filtration efficiency, polarized filters reduce strain on the HVAC system, improving energy efficiency and potentially lowering utility bills. 4. Extended HVAC System Life • Polarized filters prevent more dirt, dust, and debris from entering the system, reducing wear and tear on components like the blower motor and heat exchanger, extending the lifespan of the HVAC unit. 5. Ease of Maintenance • Many polarized filters use disposable pads or washable components, making them easy to maintain without frequent replacements of the entire unit. 6. Reduction in Allergy and Asthma Symptoms • The ability to trap fine particles and allergens can significantly benefit individuals with allergies or asthma, providing cleaner air to breathe. 7. Eco-Friendly Option • With some reusable components and better energy efficiency, polarized filters can be a more environmentally friendly choice compared to disposable filters. While polarized filters are generally more expensive upfront, their long-term benefits in air quality, energy efficiency, and system longevity often make them a worthwhile investment for homeowners prioritizing cleaner air and lower HVAC maintenance costs.
If your furnace keeps going off on high limit, it typically means the system is overheating. Here are the key areas to check: 1. Airflow Issues: • Dirty Air Filter: A clogged filter restricts airflow, causing the furnace to overheat. Replace the filter regularly. • Blocked Vents or Ducts: Ensure supply and return vents are open and free of obstructions. • Blower Motor Problems: If the blower isn’t working correctly, it won’t circulate air properly, leading to overheating. 2. Heat Exchanger: • A cracked or damaged heat exchanger can cause the system to overheat. Inspect it carefully or have a professional check it. 3. High-Limit Switch: • The high-limit switch itself could be faulty. If it’s malfunctioning, it may trigger prematurely. 4. Dirty or Blocked Furnace Components: • Dirty Blower Wheel: Dust buildup on the blower wheel can reduce airflow. • Clogged Secondary Heat Exchanger: Debris or buildup can restrict airflow and cause overheating. 5. Improper Gas Pressure: • If the gas pressure is too high, the furnace may produce excessive heat. A professional can test and adjust this. 6. Size of the Furnace: • An oversized furnace can cycle too quickly, potentially triggering the high-limit switch. This requires assessing whether the furnace is appropriately sized for your home. 7. Thermostat Placement: • A thermostat located in an area with temperature extremes can cause the furnace to overwork, leading to overheating.
Recently discovered your channel and I enjoy the content. I’m currently in school learning hvac and seeing vids like this really helps me understand the process of things I’ll see
That’s awesome and thanks for commenting. I also went to tech school, but I learnt so much more out in the field. Especially in regard to customers.
Helpful video. In that slot on the side, where is their filter? However stop wrapping your meter wires so tight, in no time they will be broken.
@@rennethjarrett4580 great point, thanks
For the newbs, when it's removed you need to discharge the capacitor on your tongue. Best way to know if it is still good or not.

Wtf is a starter
@@MrTk6969 The contactor.. Sometimes I call it a starter when I’m speaking with customers.
@XaviersHVAC_Content yea don't call it that if u call anything the starter that would be the capacitor. Tell them the contactor is basically a light switch
Contactor is not a starter until it's rated for 100a or more.
First and foremost, you gotta discharge the capacitor or it will shock the hell outta you. It can be fatal.
No u don't i never did forb15 years and never got zapped

@@aetherguy881 awesome 😎 way to keep them cool. Are you in service/install or both?
@XaviersHVAC_Content I'm an electrician and the AC wasn't working, my troubleshooting correctly led me to a bad capacitor. Fun fact, it was my AC!
discharge the cap
My advice would be concerning the heat strip is obviously figure out proper heat kit for this unit. And most importantly get a licensed electrician to run the wire from the panel to the heater. Nice work.
@@LeoLoder yeah I sent that information over to our install team. Are you in service/ install or both?
I retired 3 yrs ago after 40 yrs in our trade. The companies I worked for did both service and install. Although I primarily did commercial work at times we would do residential. 1 day I would be servicing a 40 ton RTU. The next day installing a 4 ton residential unit. I always made it clear to my service managers ( after I had enough experience) My job is not to be a electrician. I'm quite capable but all it takes is one mistake and bad things happen. I see you're starting off, good for you this trade is demanding. Take your time, don't be afraid to ask questions to senior techs. I wish you nothing but success.
