Skull replica made from wire armature with paper mache/paper clay. It was then coated with fiberglass resin and painted and then coated with regular polyurethane.
I saw someone make an allosaurus skull by cutting out cross sections with foam and then gluing it together and sanding it.
Hi just wondering how you got the measurements to make the armature I’m trying to make an allosaurus just like this I just can’t seem to find the dimensions needed!
Hi Mike, would be willing to share what type of wire you did use. I want to start a similar project and would like to have a good structural foundation. Thank you for sharing your amazing project! This turned out more then just good... simply amazing.
It's aluminum wire thick enough to hold its shape well. As long as you can bend it easily and it hold its shape, just about any wire will do.
@@MikeGleasonThank you for your encouraging answer... I will have to attack this soon...
Could you explain what material use
Do you think you will build the bottom jaw
This is incredible
when you say paper clay in the description what do you mean by that
Take a look at one of these videos: ruclips.net/user/results?search_query=best+paper+mache+clay+recipe
thank you ! I will probably have more questions and I appreciate you answering them!
Where did you find the print out? I'd like to do this but a pteranodon
I mostly build digital 3D models in the computer, so I just took some screen captures of a digital model I had already built. Check out SketchFab or similar sites to find a model and capture various views and print them out. I built this by hand because 3D printing is ridiculously expensive unless you only want something that is few inches long.
Well this is just amazingly good - well done, Sir! How long did the project take you?
Probably 3-4 days spread out over a couple of months during the summer.
@@MikeGleason Wow, much faster than I guessed... I was thinking more like 3-4 week's worth of working days!
Thanks voor this upload, i made a skull with some of your technieks but i used polymer clay (airdrying)....looking good (90 cm long and 11 kilo for the upper halve of the skull).
What kind of paint did you used?
So ummm.... first?
I wonder if a museum would ever crack a skull open to see whats inside
What do you expect to be inside lol
This thing looks so AMAZING
Impressive
Great work! Really wonderful If you make de lower jaw this will be a masterpiece
Woah!!! Building this would be cheaper then buying a copy of one. Awesome! www.prehistoricstore.com/item.php?item=1267
Looks great, what material did you use over the shop towels?
It's paper clay. There are recipes for it all over YT. It's cheap to make and very hard, but porous and not waterproof. That's why I covered it with that liquid resin stuff.
@mickyjaguar2282 Yes, I think it does make it much more sturdy and prevents chipping or crumbling. I don't think it would survive a drop onto a hard surface, though - especially those teeth.
Amazing work..... did you make the lower jaw ?
I started it, but haven't finished it.
hello I have the project to realize a skull of t-rex in paper macher and I am therefore to fall on your incredible video! I would like to know if you would be ready to give me 1 or 2 advice? 🙏
What do you want to know?
Did you use different types of papier mache? after finishing the structure, what kind of paper did you use? (The blue)
The type of paper really doesn't matter as long as it isn't too stiff. The blue stuff is something called shop towels; it's a type of paper towel used in workshops. Some people build up the form using aluminum foil and put paper mache over it to smooth it out. It's OK to experiment with different materials.
ok thank you very much i will do some test👍🏻
Could you tell me where you found the plans on paper? on google image I find no good plan from above
Did you print of the image of skull piece by piece on A4?
Yes.
That what they look like
Unbelievable :0 How about slice it in half and add the internals along with the muscles and the skin for one side and then join it back together? This way you could see the internals through the holes in the other part that is skull only 😃 Something like that came across my mind after watching this. Even in the smaller scale it would be awesome I think.
This is amazing. Would you consider selling a set of “prints” for the armature? I am going to build one this winter.
Thanks! I don’t have any blueprints for the armature. The armature really just mimics the bone structure, so you only need to print out top, side, and maybe bottom views of the cranium, which you can easily find in a google image search. Good luck.
Quick question if I may. Because it’s resin, is it water proof? Also how strong is it? This may sound crazy, but if I did this could I accidentally bang it on a wall and it be ok?
Yes, I covered it in resin specifically to make it waterproof. The wire armature makes it really sturdy; it would easily survive accidental banging around, but it might chip pieces off.
Mike Gleason Thank you! 😊
Hey that's Sketchfab! Going to need to look you up. Have you sold anything there? Bit curious about selling there myself.
Amazing detail!!! I believe you could work at Legacy effects
I love it!! I want to make one for my ball python enclosure but i was wondering can it be made with tin foil instead of wire?
Thanks! Yes, you can use foil. My skull is almost 2 feet long and I wanted some sturdy wire as support to keep it from falling in on itself. But if foil can support what you're putting on it, use that instead.
Im building it for my ball python enclosure. And i wish you showed how you made this step by step in a video instead of pictures of the progress.... How did you make the roof of the mouth and brain cavity? I want it to look as real as possible
Yeah, the video is more of an overview of the process. But, @0:15 you can see a wire running down the center to support the palate. Tape was used to bridge the palate from this wire to the maxillae, etc. Then, the area was strengthened with paper mache/clay. Same for the brain case (wire form, tape, clay), which you can see @0:16. What you really need to know is the form of the skull bones so that you can replicate. I have a digital model I built that you can see from any angle on SketchFab: skfb.ly/6HDCU
That would look nice in a Python enclosure
I was planning to make one, so I came to RUclips to learn how to! 👍😁
Bird watching, 🐤🐦🕊️🦅🦆🦉🐔🦃 Great! Post a video if you make one.
@@MikeGleason Ok! I will if I manage to make it! ✌😊
I wonder how it's made
wow...this skull looks so real. amazing...great work.
Thanks! I have to find the motivation to do the lower jaw.
