Grays Outdoors

Добавлен 29 янв 2012
Just a guy who enjoys the outdoors, from my days hiking and camping in South Africa, where I grew up, to family camping in Dorset.
I also enjoy canoeing, Fire cooking, DIY projects, wild camping and anything outdoors.
I share my experience with the Cub Scouts on a weekly basis and thought it might be an idea to share some of my experience with you.
I don’t profess to be an expert on anything but by sharing, we can learn new skills together.

What loop did you use to bolck the rope in the first hole?
@@P.J.Thompsonhi PJ. Used an overhand knot and created a loop, I used this later to tie off the working end of the rope.

This sunset canoe trip on the River Thames looks absolutely magical! The tranquil waters reflecting the golden hues of the setting sun create a serene and picturesque scene. As a North American, let me officially apologize for the exportation of Canada Geese - that non-migratory race of Canadas originally inhabited the southern Mississippi River region, but they flourish when brought in as ornamental pond geese!!!
😂😂 cheers for watching
They look very good, great job
Great vid 👍
Thanks for the kind comment have a great weekend. ATB. G
You're very welcome it was a pleasure to watch, best wishes
I found heating the nylon cord up over a controlled flame and then pulling on the cord tight , about 15cm length,it then is thinner and the cord goes hard so it doesn't bunch up when trying to tread it.
What, if anything, limits the spread of the tripod legs?
Hi Jarod. Because of the downward pressure and the fact that the surface is grass, the legs are secure. I have built tripods with the Scouts on a hall floor and we needed to secure them with ties between each leg as they splayed on a wooden floor. ATB. Grays
What is the length of the strap you are using to secure the float bag in? Also, others I have watched forgo the stearn strap, arguing that the stern seat will stop any forward movement; what are your thoughts on that?
Hi Stephan, thanks for your query, these are standard off the shelf 25mm webbing straps, I think they were 2,5m but I found that it was too long and I eventually cut them shorter. The length would very much depend on your bag size and to be safe just measure before buying. Further to the stern strap, you raise a good point and their is about a 3 inch gap between the stern seat and the bag so probably not necessary but I did it anyway while doing the straps, live and learn. ATB. Grays
Thank you so much !
Happy it helped👍
Would you recommend applying wax to brand new leather walking boots .. before they have ever been used
Hi Brian. Probably good practice yes. ATB. Grays
@@GraysOutdoors I did do it. Thanks !
Excellent run through as I have the same boots, enjoyed the humour as well 😉😊
Cheers for watching
Will it work with the old-style Big-Agnes valves? The ones that unscrew, pull out, but stay attached?
hi David, honest reply. I don’t know but it does have a large silicone fitting that does stretch. if it’s like the standard old ones I am thinking of then yes..ATB. grays
nice & simple quick video, have recently picked up a Feuerhand baby and wondered if it was gonna be a pain to make match fit...your vid suggests no 👍
Still works no problem. Cheers for watching. ATB. Grays
Loved it.
Thanks for watching ATB. Grays
Good video, the pump works good But you need to realize just how noisy it is. I sent mine back after trying it. No thanks, a pump sack works good.
How do you waterproof the ankle supports on the boots?
Hi Gareth, because they are soft leather I give them a coating of the polish as well. Have a good week. ATB. Grays.
Happened upon your camp location from this video today. Strung up my hammock and took a little time out to enjoy nature.
A great spot to chill out. ATB. Grays
Where's your ridgeline?

Going to get some scarpa gtx at the weekend hopefully. Sick of fabric shoes goretex break down had wet feet this weekend way so not good. Great video though. Would you recommend the g wax over scarpas own cream? Or even dubbin?
Hi Andy, good luck with the new boots. I went from Leather to Gortex back to leather again and I am happy with the Scarpa. Personally I use the G wax. I heat it a bit before use. but the others would be fine, I think it’s more a point of caring for your leather. ATB. Grays
I have Scarpa leather boots, no gore Tex. With thorough care they are incredibly comfortable on the trail. Perfect for our bush and mountains here in New Zealand. 😊
Thanks for the video. Do you just use the wax, or do you ever apply any other water proofing products? Do you have a review or some thoughts on the Scarpa Delta boots?
Hi StoicM. I haven’t done a review on the Scarpa boots, boots are very personal relating to foot shape so I am not going there😁. I only use the wax and sometimes I heat it a bit. The wax does the waterproofing really well. ATB Grays

May I ask the size of the tubing? Perhaps I missed it mentioned. Thanks!
Hi David, don’t recall mentioning but I do have a piece left and it’s a FITT Cristello extra 6x8. Any pvc tubing should be fine 6x8 is the internal and external measurements in millimetres. This obviously depends on your rope diameter. I used a 5mm rope , it was a tight fit I pulled it through with a piece of string but the finished result was good. ATB. Grays
Where did you launch please? Starting point Thanks

Thanks for watching Juan. That was the last of summer. Got some more coming just been busy with work. Cheers for the comment. ATB. Grays
In terms of airmatress fillup time is it on par, faster or slower than an average size air matress pump?
Hi Chai, I cannot comment as I have had a manual hand pump or used my mouth to top the mattresses. Let me just say that I will never go back and it’s way faster than any other manual pump I have used. ATB. Grays

You’re actually meant to double zip the expander panel, so it’s not lying open like yours, it basically doubles up to provide a very effective insulated draught panel.
Absolutely but in the summer months I use the expander panel to make a nice larger width sleeping bag. Thanks for the tip. ATB Grays
This is enormously helpful! Thank you very much
Glad to hear it’s useful. ATB. Grays
How is your under quilt holding up? Is it adequate for our winters in the UK? Watched your construction video 👌. Well done
Hi Kenneth. Thanks for watching, to be honest it’s better for half of summer and autumn, if you had a higher down ratio it would be more suitable for the colder months. ATB. Grays
I suggest applying the wax indoors. If you are wearing a winter coat, it is too cold. After waxing, heat up the boots with a hairdryer to really let the wax melt in. Let dry overnight and then buff the boots with a brush or soft cloth. Works great !
Great idea Steven. Love the hairdryer tip. Cheers for watching. ATB. Grays
@@GraysOutdoors The buffing also leaves a nice shine on the boots ! All waxes, whether or not they are shoe polishes, will produce a shine if buffed.
Why not just lace between the holes in the hull?
Hi, sorry so late to reply, sometimes comments get lost. I only needed the lacing to hold in the airbags and thought I could always extend it at a later stage. Works really well. Cheers for watching. ATB grays
I'm sold thanks
Used it for a while now and am in love😁 the lamp is an awesome addition. ATB. Grays
Hello Graham, you have a new subscriber. This was the video equivalent of an easy-listening LP. (For the youngsters - that's a flat vinyl musical disc that preceded CD's and streaming.) I love the hammock set up and am tempted to try it, but I move around a lot during the night and I get the impression a hammock wouldn't be good for a side-sleeper. Might stick to the bivvi.
Hey Steve. High praise. As u can see I do know what an LP is and believe it or not even owned them in the 80’s. 😁 the hammock setup is great but if u r a side sleeper or a mover and shaker I would stick to being a ground dweller which to be honest is my go to choice. One to check out is the Amok but quite pricey. Cheers for the sub. ATB. Grays
Definitely seems worth it, especaily backpacking trying in deflate mattress to a smaller compact size.
Hi Jonast. Works like a dream and the lamp is such a great bonus. ATB. Grays
