    To be fair to the "cowboys", maps, keys, and codes are meant to be _used_ not just locked away behind glass. Respect for the creators implies respect for the original purpose of the piece, not necessarily our modern, disconnected purpose. A bit like collectors hoarding toys instead of allowing future generations of children to enjoy them as intended. Sometimes, "it belongs in a museum" needs to be tempered with "Indiana, let it go."

    Is pvc based materail plastic also a good storage media? Coz i cant really find any polyester pocket in my country 😢 and if i already put the photos in pocket can i then stored it in magnetic album?

    • @TheConservationStarter
      @TheConservationStarter 4 месяца назад

      Hello, PVC is what is known as a malignant plastic - it will deteriorate and damage your photographs. The only stable plastics to store your photographs in is polyester, polyethylene or polypropylene. You don't have to store it in plastic - you can store it in paper pockets that are archival. Ideally an alpha cellulose acid free paper. You can search in your country for 'archival' or 'conservation grade' housing material. Magnetic albums usually have adhesive and non-archival plastic both of which will degrade. I don't recommend storing photos in them but a lot of people historically did. All the best with storing your photos!

    Ideal DPI?

    • @TheConservationStarter
      @TheConservationStarter 4 месяца назад

      Hello! Generally the higher dpi/ppi the better (as long as you have the storage space for larger files). It also depends on the type of original item you are trying to digitise. There are different standards you can follow - for example the FADGI standards (Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative). They recommend capturing at 600ppi for photographs to reach the highest digitisation standard, but 200-400 ppi is acceptable. Here are the 2023 FADGI Guidelines: www.digitizationguidelines.gov/guidelines/FADGITechnicalGuidelinesforDigitizingCulturalHeritageMaterials_ThirdEdition_05092023.pdf All the best with your digitisation!

    Some photo albums of the past had pages that were made of black heavy paper (much like what is referred to as 'construction paper'). Often people would use some kind of glue or adhesive to mount the photos to the pages. In my particular scenario the photos were originally loose for a time in a collection and they had information written on the backs of them, often dates and names of the people depicted in the photo. At a later date they were glued into an album. The album lasted for a few decades or so and began to fall apart. So the photos were removed from the black pages and the album discarded but the glue and much of the black paper fiber remained adhered to the back of the photographs. What is your method for removing the remaining album paper to reveal the written information?

    • @gregclarke6419
      @gregclarke6419 3 месяца назад

      Greetings, did you ever come right? My wife has exactly the same issue, except most of the photos are still stuck on the album pages or what's left of it. I searched and found white vinegar is able to dissolve the old glue. I tried on a test photo (one we were prepared to lose if necessary), and it worked - using a cotton bud dipped in the vinegar and dabbing the vinegar onto the black fibres and rubbing them off. The big caveat is that if the photo backing is damaged (by trying to scrape the fibres off with a knife) , the black dye from the album page may leech through to the front of the photo. Now, I am trying to ascertain if white vinegar is safe for the front of the photo; i.e. won't damage the image.

    • @steves7896
      @steves7896 3 месяца назад

      @@gregclarke6419 I had very good success with just simply scraping the black paper fiber and the glue away with a razor blade, holding the blade perpendicular to the surface, being gentle and just taking my time. The photo I worked on was an old school class group photo and all the names were written on the back. Trouble was, they were all first names only and the photo was made in 1928.

    • @gregclarke6419
      @gregclarke6419 3 месяца назад

      @@steves7896 Glad to hear it. I have the same - there is info written on the back as well, and I am concerned that the vinegar will clean that as well. I will give your method a try. Cheers.

    Calling this a "botched restoration" is not true. If the person doing this didn't ever intend on trying to restore the item to its original condition, so it's not a restoration at all. Basically it's a new piece of "art". One that people want to see to laugh at. But calling it a restoration is not even true.

    Hello, do you know why my starch mix with water 1:5 ratio instantly turned to paste like after 1 min of stirring on heat? I soaked it over night before cooking

    • @TheConservationStarter
      @TheConservationStarter Год назад

      Hello, I have never made wheat starch paste at a 1:5 ratio so I can't answer directly. Typically ratios for conservation work are different. What are you using the paste for? This changes what ratio you would use. The ratio could be one issue. Also the quality of the wheat starch paste powder can also change how well the paste performs during cooking - we recently had a bad batch that would not get to the right stickiness or consistency even though we followed our typical cooking procedure. Another thing to check is the heat - we don't want it on high heat and to see an instant consistency change. That means the starch paste has had no chance to get sticky! Could you try lower heat or testing another stove/heat source? Induction stoves are notoriously too hot and fast - it is better for it to be gradually heated. Overnight soaking isn't always necessary - we only soak for a short period of time. There is a great wheat starch paste article published in the Journal of the Institute of Conservation but I believe it is behind a paywall. So I would check your ratio, quality of wheat starch paste powder, source of heat, heat temperature and soaking time. There is so many variables with making starch paste and it really does depend on what you are making it for. Conservators train for years just to know how to make it and we practice every week for years to perfect the outcome!

      I'm glad it was useful! Chemistry is such a good background to enter conservation with. If you are wanting to find out more there are heaps of resources in the video description that might help you decide. All the best with your conservation journey!

    Is there actual proof that this is real

      I haven't visited the site in Spain (I'm based in Australia) so I haven't seen proof of this with my own eyes. I relied on news reports from various newspapers in different countries. The fact that so many reported on it definitely makes it appear real. Also the images and the story is a familiar one - someone who is not a professional conservator is asked to 'restore' cultural heritage and botches it. We have seen many examples of this over the years.
