AH! Your videos are making me excited about getting back to Japan. We're visiting Osaka this time as well so these videos are great.
That's nice to hear. Have you been to Osaka before? I love it. Much more down to earth than Tokyo and less serious.
so cool! gotta make a return visit now sigh lol
Worth seeing if you're a Nintendo fan for sure
What was the total weight??
I've never weighed it. I'd estimate 10-12kg.
Love your video's watching from Chicago in the US
Appreciate it, thanks for watching
just had some ohagi recently it is fantastic!
Yeah I keep getting it whenever I see it now. Solid dessert choice
The song is Yankee Doodle. What a strange song to play on loop.
I went back today and it was on again!
@@TravellingBritishGuy that's diabolical
Not sure if it's due to the lens of the camera but the aisles are far apart for a Japanese store.
No that's how they are, relatively wide. I agree but I prefer it like that.
great video! thoroughly enjoyed it. yes some things were expensive others not so much, try getting some bananas for £1.61 at waitrose haha. perhaps now, as well as other supermarkets, you could also venture into japanese restaurants and explore the food culture and japanese food.
Yeah I agree. Some prices are high here, others not so much. It's strange, overall in Japan most products will fall into a narrower range of prices compared to somewhere like the UK, but then you have massive outliers, like those grapes and strawberries. I do want to get out and do more types of videos soon. Watch this space.
Nice video
interesting naming trivia at the beginning! im always curious about in tokyo, is it shimbashi or shinbashi i see both used interchangeably
It will always technically be the n version in Japanese because there's only the ん sound like that available. But when it's said out loud in a word it can sound like n or m. It must just be one of those transliteration rules that don't always make complete sense.
Nice. Thanks for sharing
I’ve started eating Natto recently, I really like it. I know people say it’s an acquired taste but as someone who loves Marmite, the flavour is pretty mild to me 😂
I think people make far too much of a fuss of it personally. It looks worse than it actually is.
just picked up some kaldi coffee farm instant espresso powder the other day! hope its good hah!
I imagine it'll be nice. Everything there looked high quality
How much I enjoy seeing how convenient this is. I would be even more delighted, if that "See nearby pickup locations" button existed for me, as well. Then I could walk to the locker which is about 5 minutes from my appartment instead of having a delivery guy coming every single day of the week while I am at work.
😂 I think it depends on the product you're ordering as to whether it's possible. Maybe it only works with stuff ordered directly from Amazon 🤔
NHK made a documentary here called Document 72 Hours: A 24-Hour Discount Supermarket in Osaka. It is a fascinating watch as you seem to get an interesting collection of customers, many I found to be shockingly honest, such as talking about being estranged from their families and OAP's talking about caring for their hikikomori child. I can't imagine anyone being so open in a Lidle or Aldi.
That sounds up my street. I'll have a look but can be hard to find Japanese stuff online right
Yep, this supermarket chain is awesomely cheap! We go to the one near Tamachi station in Tokyo. ❤❤
It's more of a Tokyo chain, right. Looks like it's gradually expanding into Kansai though.
I've always enjoyed Christmas in Japan, but I was never a fan of family Christmas or Christmas dinner. Being able to go about my day as normal, catch a film, get food out, and maybe treat myself to something is always fun. It is a good date day too.
It sounds like Japan is the place for you over Christmas then. I have to admit, I miss the UK version whenever I'm here.
@@TravellingBritishGuy New York used to be a good mix, you had all the Christmas stuff of the UK, plus you could go and get Chinese food and watch a film.
did you record the voice after? if you did, then that is def the way to go. you have a really soothing voice. was a really relaxing watch. arigatou
Yeah I did. 😀 Thanks for the feedback
you deserve more views
I'm hoping they'll come. Only started the channel a month ago. But thank you.
Loved this video
Iceland equivalent ?

Not mentioned this for a few videos have I
Lint roller in pride of place ❤
i am enjoying your supermarket comparison videos. as someone who has never been to japan, i would love to see a video from you about a chain supermarket that does high end and quality stuff, as opposed to the budget end. something like the equivalent of waitrose in the uk.
Thanks 😀 I did do a tour of Central Square Life on this channel which is nice, but I'm planning to go to Meidi-ya soon too.
@@TravellingBritishGuy That's brilliant, i've just seen that video after you mentioned it. Top notch, i'll give you another idea, after you do Meidi-ya, you could also do like a department store video. I'm sure the viewers would love that. :)
I've always found the more run down and dirty a place is in Japan the better the food. At least with restaurants, the chef/cook is normally a guy so old he should have been retired for at least a decade, but he's perfected his skill.
Yeah that can be the case, but it's also not always true and usually not in the case of supermarkets 😂
i literally searched "neon store japan" haha. you didn't disappoint.
right... here we are 😅
Yep, same as first commenter. Hooked. Your style of videos / narration is great. By the time I get there ill be pretty knowledgeable thanks to you 👍
Appreciate the feedback. Kinda finding my style as I go. Hope you have a great trip. As with anywhere, it'll be so much better with a bit of context/knowledge.
Hey, man. I stumbled upon your channel a few days ago and I've been totally hooked since then. Watching your videos feels like actually being there with you. Sooo, thanks for having me. ✌️🙂
Thanks for the comment, it's what I'm aiming for. Happy to have you along 🤘
Nice review. Useful as I'll be in Japan at some point next year. Also, more on rural Japan / less city life? Like if you wanted to get away from city life? I'll research but the idea's just came to mind. I just found your arriving in Japan vod. Ill look through your others 👍
Nice. Where are you heading? Some rural videos would be fun. Yeah I haven't been out to the inaka yet at all.
@@TravellingBritishGuy Prob start Toyko or Osaka for 1-2 weeks and see from there. I have a few months to research. Intend to stay for awhile but we will see.
What’s the best countrysides, friendly but not inconvenient to get to and with good food?
@@richardlau2447 Most places are fairly easy to get to by train, including the countryside. If you go far enough out of most cities you'll hit the 'inaka'. I plan to do that soon so I'll show somewhere near Osaka. There are a couple of temples I want to see.
@@TravellingBritishGuy plz do, very interested of rural/small towns but just found you so I have quite the backlog :)
👏👏
🛫👍
This seemed like a sort of higher end, or expensive, store. What do you think the difference in total price would be if you bought mostly the same things at a lower end, less expensive, store? Here in Colorado USA, there is approximately a 10% to 15% difference between the nicer grocery stores and the lower end stores.
Yeah I'd say it's close to the type of difference you mention. I actually have a video filmed at a discount supermarket filmed and coming up v soon.
👍🍜🍅🍌
Compared to grocery prices here in nyc this looks about 70% cheaper.
Damn, this ain't even the cheapest supermarket.
one of my favorite shrines
Hard to beat for fun factor
You gotta try that Osaka kush 😂😂😂
Hi. What devices do you use in shooting your videos? Thanks. We're visiting next year and so excited cause of your vids
😃 I use a DJI Osmo Action 4 and my Google Pixel phone. Hope you have the best trip.
Hello! are all mangas written in Japanese version at BOOKOFF?
Hi, I didn't see any English ones on this trip to Book Off. I think they're quite rare. I am planning on going to other book shops soon. Online is probably still the best place for them. All the ones I saw here were Japanese.
70 cents for a manga.. Damn. And here I bought a japanese-version of SBR, which retails for 440 Yen, for 15 euros xD
I've been there, importing manga to the UK 😂 it's nice to be on the right side of prices now
That’s awesome. I was wondering how mush did it weigh fully packed?
I will try and do this one day. I haven't weighed it yet. I'd estimate 10-12kg.
They sell a lot relics from past
Yeah that's why I love it 😁
So airlines don't have a carry on limit? I thought it was 7kg but maybe they just don't check?
They do have a limit but I travel a lot and can't remember the last time anyone checked my rucksack. I'm willing to take the risk of paying a fee if they ever ask.
That particular supermarket chains' claim to fame is inexpensive meats, especially when bought in bulk.
That makes complete sense considering the name
You're traveling without a towel? So you're skipping interstellar traveling...😁
😂 does a microfibre towel count?
I have never used a lint roller in my life, what do you need that for? Also a frying pan! I am speechless. Serious question. Do you have special dietary needs, or do you just home cook to save money? I am getting so many mixed messages. You can afford to stay in AirBnB's, but you don't eat out? Do you cook local food when you travel or the same things you eat at home? Does your Laptop have a big hard drive? Because I could not get by without external SSDs. Also do you pay extra, I now live in Malaysia and Air Asia have a 7kg limit for hand luggage (unless you pay extra)
Don't overthink the lint roller 😂 I'm sure I could do without it, but I've found some washing machines while travelling leave your clothes very dusty. As for the pan, I'm travelling for months at a time and try to eat plant based as much as possible, yeah. It's cheaper and healthier. There's no way I'd want to eat out every day for months on end. I do cook with the local ingredients. My laptop has ok storage but I'm actually using online backup ATM.
@ Thank you for the reply. I would not like to depend on put putting my videos on the cloud, but each to their own. As for the food, now it’s clearer. Thank you.
Where in Osaka is this?
Near Daikokucho subway station in Naniwa ward.
Thank you! There is one of these near our hotel in Tokyo and I think it will have better fruit and veg selection than convenience stores? And cereals? We will need to pick up some fiber 😅
Yeah for sure. Supermarkets win every time against konbinis imo.
Great video. Question with carry ons, most airlines have a weight limit of 7kg. How are you on weight with the full bag in this video please.
I haven't actually weighed it. At a guess I'd say it's at least 10kg, however I can't remember the last time an airline asked to measure or weigh my rucksack so I just chance it.
@@TravellingBritishGuy great, thought so.guess it’s simple enough if they do weigh it just pay excess? What if they ask you to check in and not allow you to bring on the cabin?
Yeah worst case scenario you'd just pay extra. If they did ask me to check in I'd be very surprised and I'd refuse basically. There's usually leeway. I find the staff helpful on the whole.
Most normal carriers will give you leeway for the weight of your carry on but budget airlines or low cost ones are especially strict when it comes to the weight limit in my experience
Thats the bookoff i often went to! If you have the time, please go to the café Ujien in Shinsaibashi 🥰 Its a 2 story store and the café is on the second floor. I used to work there for a long time.
I just looked it up. Seems like maccha is the speciality? I haven't had anything like that in a while. I'll keep an eye out.
@TravellingBritishGuy Matcha and Hojicha 😊 Fresh from Uji
