Green Sea Turtle: Cleaning Up the Ocean with Art!
chrisbeaven.com/painting/green-sea-turtle/
I’m extremely excited for this next painting. This painting could very well be the beginning of paintings that give me true purpose in my life. So many different things are coming together and I’m finding connections within these animal painting that I find it hard to contain the excitement.
Yesterday Pattie and I went to the Bishop museum here in Hawaii. A wonderful museum all about the natural history of the Hawaiian people. But what really made the visit worth it was when we sat down and talked with Manny at the Parley.tv exhibit. Not only did all three of us connect in our efforts of conservation but Manny also showed us how they have been pull...

    Thank you for sharing these important tips, I’ve been using original Liquin for two years and I started to have reactions like intense headaches, and my nose bleeds, even with a ventilated room, and using only liquid soap to clean the brushes, I’m replacing it for flaxseed oils again and gel, I don’t want to have to attack my health to make art anymore

    I'm made the painful switch from oil to acrylic years ago and it was PAINFUL. Then I made the switch to watercolor which was even more painful and took me longer to adjust too by like 2 1/2 years total. I still long for my oils at they stay wet and I can wipe off and paint over mistake, and get a less cartoony look than watercolors. I recently spent a few hundred to get oil paints together, gamaso, etc. and was going to go back to oil painting this week and I realize now they will sit in my wonderful easel box I resurrected as I'm not diving into toxicity or fire hazards with them. I tried water based oil paints about a year and a half ago and HATED them. They aren't the same as oils. Tip, if you guys ever switch from oils/acrylic to watercolor - get NON-STAINING colors so you can undo. You can't just paint over mistakes in watercolor. Also, watercolors can be very toxic too so you can't let your animals drink it, it's supposed to be disposed with poison control - not down the drain, unless you've verified you aren't using toxic colors. Do this at BlickArt.com. They have a toxic page for every paint. I don't buy from them and have no affiliation with them. They lost me with their bad packaging and all the broken colored pencils when I started buying the nicer pencils. It happened over to the point my skin crawls even considering ordering from them. If you buy any pencils in singles expect nothing more than a thin plastic packaging where they get broken from the tips to 2 inches down, constantly in shippping. Jerry's Art Arama puts them in used pencil boxes and I never get damaged pencils when I order several singles instead of the whole several hundred dollar tins (Caran D'ach, Polychromos, Derwent light fast, etc.)

    I only use linseed oil when I'm painting, and clean my brushes with dish soap and water. I also only use cheap brushes (I haven't been painting for very long). It suits my style of painting. Since I have dogs who are nuts, I avoid any cadmium paints, except yellow. Thanks for the tip on how to avoid it entirely! Also, thanks for the tips on not cleaning your brushes. I'll give that a try.

      May I ask how do you dispose of linseed oil? I’m worried of it combusting

    • @user-fe7mg5ot9z
      @user-fe7mg5ot9z 7 дней назад

      @@leslieaguila8142 I'm not sure what you mean by disposing of it. I tend to use it all! I will say, I don't use rags, I use paper towels, and they are rarely soaked in it. From what I have been able to find out, it is soaked rags that are the biggest problem. I only use the amount of linseed oil I need for painting, so nothing really gets soaked in it. I also keep it away from heat sources. From what I have been able to find out, once the linseed oil is dried, it is not combustible any more. Don't take this as gospel - that's just what I have been able to find out. If you are using rags, the information I found suggests laying them out flat, outside, to dry. It may be that the being crumpled is what causes the heat to build up on the rags (kind of like when hay is baled wet, it will also self-combust). Another suggestion was to thoroughly soak your rags in a bucket of water. Not sure if any of this helps.

    I have just recently changed from acrylics to oils and honestly the cleaning of the brushes part of the process, had almost put me off as I was doing it every day. Knowing I can just leave them in a store bought cooking oil overnight/weeks is a great news. I will be checking the supermarket shelves for the specific types you mentioned, thanks for the tip 👍

  • @mariannacervantes3908
    @mariannacervantes3908 24 дня назад

    Is it necessary to soak the brushes overnight, or could I just dip them in the oil? Currently, I’ve been cleaning them in oil until most pigment is removed, then dip them in a clean brush dip up to the ferrule and lay them flat at a slight downward angle. But I’m finding this method is still too time consuming. I’ve avoided suspending them in oil because I don’t trust the spring/coil contraption to not let my skinny detail brushes slip out (especially if it’s holding a mix of thick and thin handles). I’d be curious to see what other kind of brush soaking setups people have come up with.

    • @janspenko8138
      @janspenko8138 8 дней назад

      It works fine enough, I just dip them thoroughly and leave them horizontally on a home-made cardboard brush holder. I only use other methods, like leaving them in or cleaing, if I know I wont be painting for a week.

    Chris, you're a saint! Thank you for all your research and sharing. I switched to acrylics eight years ago after moving into a not-so well-ventilated studio with an indoor house cat, thinking there was just no other solution to painting healthy because of how I learned to paint in college. Rather than do my own research, I just stuck with what I know, and while I've enjoyed developing skills in acrylic painting, I have missed oils so much. I was just working under the impression that everything about oil painting is toxic, no matter what. I am so grateful to have discovered your channel.

    Thank you for tying this truth together. My best works have been when combining the emotion to the subject. A straight up portrait, bland, but add a mother gazing into her childs eyes, master piece! I love painting flowers, they represent to me the beauty and shortness of life. Often taken for granted. How do i tie this idea to the painting of say, a rose? In older times, adding a time piece, a candle, a skull alluded to the passing of time. In modern times I simply draw a blank. Have you any ideas? Your videos are fantastic!

    This video confirms I was on the right track when I switched to non-toxic oil painting. I clean my brushes more often just because I don't want leftover pigments creating undesirable tints in colors I'm mixing. I hadn't thought about not snacking on paint right out of the tube, though. Maybe I'll just keep some pistachios or cashews close by for emergencies.

    Great video Chris - thanks! Just one question though about the types of brushes you place in the oil bath. They all looked like flat or filbert brushes, but what about rounds and riggers? I use those pointed brush types quite a lot with oil painting. Wouldn't they become permanently misshapen, i.e. the points damaged, after letting them stand on their tips in the oil bath? How do you deal with those brush types? Thanks!

    I have been trying not to use solvents. I use ivory soap to clean my brushes. Cheap tip from my art professor. After I finish my current tubes of cadmium paints i plan to switch to the hansa versions you shared. Thank you. Also, I have just been using linseed oil or a mixture of linseed oil with damar varnish recently to make my paints thinner and more flowier. Do you think that is ok/enough or do you think i should be using some of that solvent free gel? What would be the difference in outcomes? What is your reason for not just adding linseed oil may I ask? I had to cringe with the don’t clean your brushes though ;) I can’t enjoy doing that but i do wipe off as much paint as i can then brush the rest out against a bar of ivory soap and water after every session. I have had the same set of nice brushes for 22 years. The only brushes I’ve had to throw out were ones of which a friend of mine’s little daughter stole/took and carelessly smashed/ splayed all the bristles.
