We want Kaynan vs Nicky Rod - Our thoughts on UFC FPI 8

Is it beneficial to drill techniques in #grappling ? Having watched the amazing #jiujitsu of #tainan Dalpra, Cole Abate and Diego Pato at the latest Polaris event, we would say, yes it is. How about this for a ruleset: Sub only, no time limit, but, as soon as there's no action for say, a minute (ie both too tired to finish) it's a draw. In a tournament it's a double elimination, which might seem crazy, but if you've fought to the point of exhaustion you're next match is likely to be a wash anyways. For the finals, maybe they get a warning or two, and if they're both too tired, it's a draw. Incentivize getting the sub, and being in shape. Or maybe sub only, and if no sub whoever had more top control. If you're sticking with a points system, how about some points for throws/takedowns, a la Judo/wrestling. In a street fight a throw can be devastating. If you want to go for the entertainment factor, let the crowd choose the winner, the ole applause-o-meter. They can also chant one more round for finals or particularly exciting matches. I don't know, there doesn't seem to be a perfect system, or even a great one. They are all either too subjective or too contrived or too open to sandbagging.
It is tough to get a good system. The first idea makes me think of Antonio Inoki seeing an awful pro wrestling match in Japan, walking out and ordering it to be stopped. Maybe we need a Gordon Ramsay-esque promoter to come out and call off any boring match, then berate both competitors for their inactivity. - Ross
BJJ ruleset is very difficult to get right
Re: kani basami - I'm one of those "it's not dangerous if you do it right" guys. It's a *scissor* takedown - you're supposed to take out your opponent's near leg, therefore you shouldn't be able to blow out that knee. It's an amazing technique, especially if you attack leg locks. It should be legal and if you do it wrong/maliciously/negligently you get punished, the same way slams can be legal but you're not allowed to spike someone on their head. Cheers
If guys are given the chance to do it right but the consequences are too severe to the opponent if they do it wrong, I think it should be banned. Blame the guys who do it wrong for ruining it for everyone else… - Ross
Cji rules really looked good compared to fpi
I reckon rather than the specific rules CJI had a better mat space and a better roster of guys to put on exciting matches. Although as we said on the pod the one scoring thing that we both disagree with is delaying the awarding of points. - Ross
William Tackett vs Levi
That’s an interesting match and I’d like to see William’s awesome top game v Levi’s awesome guard. But for storyline I’d go Andrew v Levi first seeing as they never met at CJI. William v Kade makes sense as Kade beat Andrew. Or could do an Andrew v Kade rematch with Tye v William also on the show. - Ross
Get my guy Ricardo Almeida on the list
I mean Craig basically defeated ADCC 😂
Also Kynan V Gordon will never happen IMO. Gordon isn't gonna be healthy enough.
Intrigued to see who the GOAT is in your opinions. Potential Big Roj bias incoming... tune in next time.
Guess which one of us rates Rog higher???
Another great video!
Thanks
Love the video!
Thanks
Craig is S+ tier. The only man to defeat ADCC itself.
Ha!
heavy video lads, keep it up
20 years of training. I only picked up the Cross-Step from the ETS: Leglocks DVD. It did not emerge on it's own for me after thousands of training sessions. I'm an instructor in the EcD camp, but I like hearing all of the objections and counter-points to it.
My thoughts hopefully came through during the video - but, to reaffirm, I think ecological training is part of practice and not the whole. I study coaching and training in professional football / soccer, NFL and other elite sports. They all have coaches giving specific instructions. There are walk-throughs, which is basically low or no resistance drilling. Anyway, there's a far deeper discussion to be had on this, but I applaud your open-mindedness and I like to think that's something I have as well. - Ross
Im a carlson gracie student. When we are learning new techniques we dont resist so that we dont build bad habbits and improper form. There is absolutely a time when we do some dialog training and talk out the position just not when learning a brand new technique. Imagine learning a new leg attack system and your partner is constantly giving you issues on just the entry.
I've trained for 26 years. I've never trained anywhere that trained moves like a karate school with no resistance. I can't even believe that exists. To me a move is a general consensus of the best way to apply a submission or position etc. Knowing that way and then drilling getting to that outcome is best.
I think those who don't drill, or don't like to drill, use the strawman of saying it's basically like training with a grappling dummy. It could be that, but I don't think it is. - Ross
The 100% ecological approach is such crap. Not to be too negative there.
I think that viewpoint is a positive!

Mohammed ⚔️
He did really well and we’re excited to see him compete again. It’s nice to have a new name in the mix.
Myself, him and our head BJJ coach Nerijus used to drill all the time when SBG was in the last Gym. He is the forefront of some really good grapplers coming out of there thanks to Nerijus
Great level of discussion, thank you
Thanks
Davis Asare vs Felipe Andrew is a bit of a mismatch

Could've just had a freeze frame of Calum staring blankly into the camera and it would have been hard to tell he wasn't on tbh. Just jokes boys, love the content!
Calum's always on! I've never encountered him not completely locked-in. - Ross
@@JiuJitsuOracle-lz9yf No disrespect intended at all. I just mean that you're always the high energy one and Calum is more of the staunch straight man. To be fair I think that dynamic is part of what makes your content so entertaining to watch.
@@Shaka_Garami Thanks. Glad you like the double act.
Where’s the other guy?
Calum had something else to do. He'll be back on the next episode.
Levi & Lachlan’s back takes from DLR, RDLR and K-Guard. Berimbolos and leg pommeling too
Hi. We're going to look at guard in a future META analysis.
Great topic. Keep doing regular vids on the nogi meta please. Subscribed.
Thanks. We're going to do a chat on the guard META next.
Dima (B-Team head coach) just uploaded a video about the use of the underhook and how Kade was able to use it to counter Tacket. I find it interesting. I have been lately using the underhook to counter aggressive grapplers.
Hi. I've been looking at Dima's vids as well. It's definitely an interesting time for wrestling in submission grappling because improvements are being made in that area.
kade was using overhooks/whizzers to counter tackets constant underhooks, his throws uchi mata, harai goshi + mir lock submission attempts he landed multiple uchi mata off tacket driving into him with underhooks.. one point he used double overs counter a bodylock/double underhook which is pretty impressive. Underhooks are generally a slightly favourable position but kades uchi mata is to deadily
Best modern no gi guard passing meta is a interesting topic. Guards like Livis looked un passable. I remember Andrew Wiltse saying and taking advantage of this in the early daisy fresh eps.
I've never watch those, do you recommend it?
I think Levi did incredible and I agree that guard players could begin to become the meta, but I personally believe that at the highest level being on top is always better. Ever since leg-locks were introduced, the bottom player no longer had to play the counter-attacker looking for openings to sweep or reverse. But I still think that the top player has the advantage because its easier for them to engage and disengage, and they can use their body weight against their opponent, which the bottom player has to constantly be fighting against. They essentially dictate when the fight starts and can exit (most of the time) whenever they want.
@@carloscortes1577the first 3 seasons I’d definitely recommend
@@Danieltbntagree with this. I’m a skinny guy but a top player myself. Using guard to be on top when I have to. Just interesting to know what the best passes would be against this new era of guard. Personally I like reverse underhook passing and JRod style knee cuts to chase the back. Would love to know what you or the podcast hosts like to use. Livi is amassing btw, it’s not my style but really appreciate seeing it because I know how hard that would be to do.
Good shout - we'll do a guard passing META. Our next one will look at the guard. The passing instructionals etc Wiltse has out are really good.
The point on foot sweeps completely disregards the fact that foot sweeps are drastically different with and without shoes.
I’ve been doing jiu jitsu a few years now, open bounty on me in the gym for foot sweeps. Too much of a specialist move.
We don't wear shoes so any difference isn't really relevant to our sport.
Comment for the algo! Let’s gooo
Good chat. You guys were talking about the Overtie vs Collar Tie. I think "Positional Hierarchy" is a dated concept. It more comes down to who is imposing it on who.
Very disappointed Casey wasn’t introduced as your High-belted Leader
The music at ADCC was horrible. It was punishing to be there.
Andrew Tackett??
We have him in A-tier.
Dingleberry wants to know where Levi is ranked. A-tier borderline S?
Hi Dingleberry. We have him in A-tier.
Gordon 1. Nicky Rod 2. Kynan 3. Peña 4. Hugo 5. My big boy rankings. (Hugo only this low due to his last performance) he has The best chance of getting higher as he’s still young and has beaten a lot of top names including Rod.
That's a fair list. Hopefully we get matches with all these guys facing each other in the near future. The Big Boy division is really interesting just now. - Ross
dante leon is S tier, beat 77 and 88kg champs in the same day, only losing to 99kg and absolute champ by 2 points
You make a good point. But he's high A for us right now along with guys like Levi and Andrew Tackett who are yet to win a big one - IBJJF gi Worlds or ADCC / CJI no gi. - Ross
Awful list. You just stacked everyone in S-tier, that's not how S-tier works. That's like saying everyone is a 10.
Out of the thousands, or millions, of grapplers in the world, these guys are all 10s right now. Everyone else would be A-D tier, but it would be too big a list to do on one podcast (or perhaps in one lifetime) and the unproven tier in particular would be absolutely massive. - Ross
@@JiuJitsuOracle-lz9yf Well if you put it that way then yes, every single ADCC / CJI competitor is "S" tier compared to all the grapplers in the world some of which are 70 year old hobbyists, or your average competitor going to NAGA's every couple of months. You just removed all meaning of your list!! Take this as positive criticism, if you want to make a tier list, and stack everyone in "S" and then put a few in "A" that's not just lazy, but also boring. It literally means everyone is the same to you, in which case why even make a list. To make it exciting try reserving S-Tier for only one or two people.
We did reserve S-tier for the elite. That's the point. There's 11 of them. There's loads that didn't make it, across lots of divisions, in both the male and female categories. If you want to put 2 people in S-tier, fine. We chose 11.
For Giancarlo there’s a few things to mention. He competed and won all 4 of his division matches before absolute which would far fatigue him than Dante and Cyborg who went out earlier in their own. He also believed he was beating cyborg and it was a tactical error not realising he got scored on after looking much more dominant against cyborg as for his Dante match it was very close and Dante was much fresher
Until someone beats Gordon, he's always gonna be the best. Nicky Rod is definitely getting better but he didn't beat any real world champions at CJI I still have kate above makeup, but Andrew is right there with Tye and Mica. Levi Jones and Merigalli are little hard to rank now
Good points. Guys like Andrew, Dante and Levi are on the cusp, we're just waiting for them to win a big one like IBJJF Worlds in the gi or IBJJF / CJI. - Ross
One could make the argument that Nicky Rod is the 5th best heavyweight. 4th at best. 1. Gordon Ryan for obvious reasons. 2. Kaynan: Based on achievement and big match credibility. Multiple time ADCC champion. 3. Pena: Achievement as multiple time ADCC champion. Also he has 2 wins against Gordon. Massive feat considering Gordon hasn’t lost since. 4. Meregali: Based on strength of schedule and dominance in his victories. 5. Nicky Rod: I don’t mind Nicky in the 4th spot. The guy just knows how to compete. Skill level doesn’t matter as much if you’re that good a competitor.
Love your content guys ! Greetings from France
Merci pour votre commentaire. Apologies if my high school French isn't S tier... - Ross
How about levi jones leary? Kade couldn't pass his guard and he's nowhere to be found
Not just Kade, but not a single person in the whole tournament. He’s starting to look like 2019 Levi again
He's really high A for us, along with guys like Dante and Andrew Tackett. We're just waiting for them to win a big one like ADCC/CJI or IBJJF gi Worlds.
S tier for sure
Comment for algorithm, great work lads
