This is good comedy, really. Just another day on The Oregon Joint Line.
Funny story: before I had ever found this layout on RUclips I had already been working on the beginning stage of my own version of a Oregon joint line freelance. My version cuts a route through the mountains east from Klamath Falls(Upper Klamath Lake technically) to connect the SP mainline in the southwest with the UP line in the northeast at Burns. Apparently this was a real idea that E.H. Harriman had come up with to "unify" the two halves of his railroad empire towards the end of his life. Harriman's dreams of a second Overland Route never came to fruition but I believe the same general idea later evolved into the Oregon California and Eastern railway. I didn't know about this when I came up with the idea, I just thought it'd be neat to have a PNW-based route that both SP and UP trains could use. Once I discovered this channel, pfft, like 7 years ago? the lore of this freelance kinda fit into my own concepts like a glove. So rather than try to "move" my own freelance somewhere else, I just decided to directly reference and cross over the Joint Line when my route eventually enters same territory. Actually, the existence of the 'Oregon Joint Line' perfectly justifies my own "Oregon Southeastern", as it gives legitimate reasons for SP to want to tap into the eastern Oregon rail market. In the revised timeline, the SP and UP, along with healthy assistance from the WP, built their own competing version of the Joint Line which serves as a secondary mainline for UP and SP's joint east-west traffic, allowing greater flexibility for UP trains going west and SP trains going east. It's more accurately described as a bridge line, but just like the OJL, the OSE uses mixed power/equipment from both "parent" lines. Yes, this was all just an elaborate scheme to put challengers and cab forwards on the same trains. I also liked the idea of WP extending their trackage rights on the SP in Oregon all the way to Portland, which would increase traffic over the Shasta and Cascade lines significantly, therefore, once again, giving legitimate business reasons for a totally unnecessary secondary mainline to be built through sparsely-populated East Oregon. If any of y'all watch TSG Multimedia, the WP Oregon Division that John covered way back like 8 years ago was another big inspiration that kinda formed the current identity of my freelance, which I've been working on since 2015. In my version of American history, Oregon was a much busier place in the 1920s-1960s than it already was in real life. Though traffic declines in the mid 60s and late 70s would probably doom my accidentally plagiarized little railroad one way or the other, regardless of freelance shenanigans. The point of this long winded comment being: thank you for the inspiration... and to be frank, being the blatant research source for most of my work. (I don't live in Oregon, and information/pictures of railroads that don't exist are surprisingly not very easy to come by)
I've watched model trains set in other regions of the country but I find western railroading more fun and interesting.
Nice to see Al Bundy found gainful employment with the UP… even if the hours are trash.
The music in the beginning made it sound like the Duke was on his way to meet Snake Pliskin.
Damn its like im at work!
I finally made it out to Oregon I'm in Ashland and I must say you have done a really good job on all of the scenery and the backdrop and everything!
Ok, I'm gunna say it for all of us. Where is our Joint line fix. You are killin us smalls. We need more OJL content. You do such a wonderful job we need more than 1 video a year. I know I am not the only one who thinks this. Please bring us more of your great content.
Hi my name is Neil schwerdt in west valley city, Utah. I have a question to ask you is your layout HO ? You,ve done a great job 6/8/24😅
We need more videos!
Cool
How the hell has Superintendent Thompson not been fired for his attitude?
I have watched this several times I love them Thanks for making great videos!
2nd comment life of a yardmaster never a dull moment.
Great layout, xerail says pro switching, Prior right w p love the big 4 that make up the bn.
14:19 *Conductor:* _A. Bundy_ 😆
NP superintendent _G.W. Thompson III_ sounds like such a huge tool
I hope to see more videos soon!
Hi oregon joint line ive enjoyed your videos time and time again i was wondering if maybe you could do a session on the emigrant turn with the np lumber and ballast love to see that Like what you did with the up local
Hi, thanks for taking the time to film and post videos of your layout. It's an inspiration. I understand it's n scale? Can I please ask - where do you get your trees from? Are they made by yourself or commercially produced? Once again, it's a great layout. Thanks and kind regards, Richard.
Thanks for the video. It's much appreciated.
Please post more videos to keep us "up to date"? This is a wonderful "N"scale layout and very inspirational for those of us who are not quite up to "Ops sessions" yet? I assume that you can just run trains over the layout, just for the sheer enjoyment of watching them travel through the scenery.. But To be able to operate like a "real" railroad is great? I often watch the videos ( and then run my "N" scale layout for a while)... our layout was built to run trains at shows or displays, so that something was always moving?.. I wish after watching the videos, that our layout had been better designed for the realistic operations like yours? Thank you for the very entertaining videos...
Do you use live log loads?
And what do you use for the images of trains and the yard plans?
So I noticed Superintendent Thompson hasn't returned since the Monument Yard 2-parter. I'm guessing he got fired for almost melting down the yard? Also, why does Sylvies not use what remains of the NP Burns branch to do yard work? I feel like it'd be useful for keeping switching jobs off the main line.
Silvies Yard almost always uses the NP Burns Branch as the yard lead.
Hate the FAKE radio chatter
Every time I hear the intro jingle, it fills me with determination, keep up the good work!
Yeah mate! Beautiful guys just beautiful. What a great rail system you have ! All the best to you all from me bj. A Great Northern R R fan.
This is my idea of operations. Great video!
what type of ballast is that?? btw awsome video!
HELL YEAAAAAAAAAH!!!🤘
Really was a 12 hour day
How do you get Rio Grand trains in Washington?
same way you had Rio Grande coal trains in California for export - runthrough over a partner railroad
This is the kind of switching action I love to participate in. Fine job done by the operator. Fun listening to the yard herder, dispatcher, yard crews, helper unit. No question. You guys have a sense of humor. BarstowRick out.
The intro truly became an earworm!!!😁
Love It Very Educational.
Your track authority form is missing boxes 7 to 13, and a few other things
Nicely Done👍👍👍👍.
Love the commentary and dispatching hahaha! Makes these videos so much better
What gauges you use your model train HO or N gauges????
this is N scale
This is the best layout I’ve ever seen. It has the perfect mix of freelance and prototype. I love it. When I made my first layout track plan, I originally went from Burns to Dayville, however I didn’t want to plagiarize your layout too much so instead I now model a fictional Burlington Northern line that runs through the Salmon River area in Idaho. Thanks for the inspiration, Dean!
thanks @Joey Specchio, I don't mind if you use the concept - I'd be interested to see your interpretation.
I've seen your glorious line in a magazine, m' boy!😍👍😎
GREAT VIDEO THANKS FOR SHARING YOUR OPERATIONS
Amazing!
Want new updates or operations coming soon????? Love your operations videos
really adore these videos and really enjoy the ops of this small but busy yard. seems to always have something to do.
Whoa! You can do so much more with N than HO. Very cool layout!
It is a little nerdy, but I love the attention to detail and the complexity of the scenarios.
