A lesson recorded for Solo from the Song Patience.
Yes the recent models are a jump in quality but Epiphone in the 500-700 range hasn’t been “junk” for 15-20 years. I have a Masterbilt AJ-500 that I got in 2008 and it’s a fantastic guitar for the price I paid. I’ve used it for recording and gigs for years. Same for a Sheraton I got in 2009.
Donnie, could you please let us know what size bridge pins you swapped out on the Hummingbird? Or did the bridge holes require modification to accommodate the bridge pin swap? Thank you for your time
I bought them from Maury’s music. Sell different types of bone bridge pins. If I’m not mistaken? I needed to use a reamer to make the whole a hair bigger. I don’t like the pins floating above like they’re stuck. Just a couple of turns.
Also you got the wood mixed up j 200 maple back an sides hummingbird solid mahogany back inside
I have them both love them
Hi Donnie ~ Can you tell me if your Epiphone Hummingbird was made in Indonesia or China? I'm hearing that the more recent stock is being churned out of China.
A nice vid. Are yours Indonesia- or Chinense-made?
Chinese
@@Donandjess0305 thanks. A lot of people online seem to dislike the switch to the Chinese factory on IBG acoustics but it's reassuring you like yours. How close is the IBG J-200 to the Gibson? Some reviews indicate that it is thin-sounding and lacks bass / not boomy like the real thing. Really not sure whether to get a J-200 or a Hummingbird.
@@F.Mercurius Love them. Feel great and play great. I always make minor adjustments to my liking(tuners, bridge pins) but I enjoy playing them
To be honest? I love the feel of the J200, but it is not as boomy at the original. I play the hummingbird more. No issues with the jumbo, just like the hummingbird better
@@Donandjess0305 thanks, good to know!
I have both of these guitars and I love them. The J200 has maple back and sides, the Hummingbird has mahogany back and sides.
Why do you need to know that?
Great review ! What is the 7th & 8th numbers on the serial number inside sound hole on the sticker.
One of my first guitars was a Korean H-50..almost 20 years ago. I’ve always loved ESP as a company. I used to browse the custom section of their site as a kid, but unfortunately I haven’t found one I’ve liked. I tried out a bunch of EC’s back in 2016 and I remember liking a 256 over the 1000. I was shocked as you’d expect. Playability was just better. I almost bought it, but I needed an amp more. I recently bought another Gibson, but I think with how the EC’s are adding more and more full thickness models I’ll probably pick one up eventually. I just haven’t seen a color or pickup configuration I like.
Thanks so much. Just got one of these and I was trying to figure it out! Much appreciated!
Thinking about getting this, i got a gibson standard traditional with burstbucker 3 but never liked it for high gain (thrash etc) . Would you recomend this ? Playability vs gibson ?
Great feeling guitar. The Fluence pickups are awesome. If you are really wanting something for high gain? Look for The Fluence Modern. These are more classic sounding pickups, and my assumption is you would be getting the same tone as what you have. I absolutely love this guitar, but it’s much lighter and slightly smaller. Check out the Ec-1000 with the modern Fishman Fluence. That will make you much happier for what you are doing.
@@Donandjess0305 How much does it weigh?
@@celpabedn about 7 lbs I believe
Thanks for the info! This is definatley top of my list of guitars for my next purchase.
Does this guitar come with Stainless Steel Frets?
Hi Andy, yes, it does.
How are those Fishman pick ups I was thinking about getting a Seymour Duncan invader in the bridge and Seymour Duncan distortion in the neck in my Ltd and my schecter
They’re very versatile. Really enjoy the line they’ve created.
@@Donandjess0305 that’s awesome
Love the look of this guitar... but not sure I want a neck heavy guitar for that price. You would think that Gibson making SG and now this company when making expensive guitars would solve for this issue. It would be an easy fix to add more weight to the body. What even spend so much time making a unique quitar without taking this into account. But I'll definately have to play one to determine if it's worth buying being neck heavy. That's why I don't own an SG... and because the SG design as a whole is screwy...the bridge is placed oddly to the left where you would typically rest your hand when playing and muting... sounds great but terrible design...
Agree. Loved the guitar. Loved the pickups, neck, and total feel. Just couldn’t get over the weight so I sold it. Really couldn’t get comfortable with it.
@@Donandjess0305 good to know... thanks!
Is this guitar good for classic 70s, 80s and early 90s rock like Guns N Roses and Motley Crue ? I don't know if it's mainly aimed for metal since the pickups are active, I already have a guitar with EMG 81/85 so I'm looking for a guitar that can do lighter classic rock.
These aren’t your normal active pickups. They have options for high gain, or regular output pickups. Great guitar!
Esp/ltd especially the deluxe series are in my opinion the most value for the buck guitars I have an old h1000 in honey sunburst and gold mechanics My favorite guitar so far Didn't played a better guitar in this price range or even 1-2 tousend above. They play really nice, low action, have a great sound and resonate great
Agreed…I’ve NEVER picked one up that wasn’t really nice..same with Ibanez….the Ibanez artwood acoustics are INCREDIBLE…especially the mahogany open pore natural finish…thing is super lightweight, and the resonance is ridiculous. If you’re into fingerstyle, blues, etc, you gotta play one…mine was $300 and if I didn’t know any better I’d swear it was at least $2k,,,outplays my Martin and My J-45…comes with really nice Grovers, bone nut….definitely check them out if you’re into shit like that
I bought a see through black last yr and am In love
Another user of the Falken here ! In spite of the fact I really like the sounds I can get out of this one (it can easily replace a telecaster and a Les Paul) with its 8 sounds, I am a bit disapointed due to the design of the guitar : yes, the neck is heavy and the guitar is off balance and it lacks the chamfert for the forearm and the belly cut. The acceess to the neck joint could be better too! The pickups and electronics are among the best I ever had, the guitar sounds more convincing than my PRS 408, but the PRS is far more comfortable to play... I really hope Duesenberg will realease others models with those kind of pick ups and electronics, but this time I hope they will come with a more ... traditionnal shape.
I’ll tell you what. I put in some smaller tire weights in the cavity. I’m not sure the weight. Just a set I bought from an auto shop. I covered them with electrical tape and I just gigged with her for the first time BIG DIFFERENCE! Because it has so many sounds, the balance was it’s only issue. Fixed it.
How much grams of weight did you need to put in to balance the guitar? I also have a Falken, great guitar, but indeed a bit neck heavy... 😅
Haven’t done it yet. Go to any auto store. They should have a pack for $8
That color is sooooo nice
nice video man, definitely going to save money for that guitar.
It’s a very nice guitar. Just wish ESP/LTD would include a case/ deluxe gig bag with their 1000 series guitars
@@Donandjess0305 yup so true, it deserves a hardcase.
Thanks for posting, well done, I have been around in circles looking for that perfect guitar body shape to fit me, I hate un balanced neck drop, I have ESP's LP styles and love em but need more contouring in the top to tilt, plus I love F holes and semi hollows and this beauty seems to have that Jazz,LP vibe with good contouring and sits with the neck up when I see most playing it, thanks for your review I can only find this with the fishmans, I will try them but I love my 57 /66's So now I have to wait until back in stock :-) your review was well done! bravo!
Thanks for the vid- it's wierd that ESP doesn't have manuals for specific guitars with details like this, just one manual that tries to cover all of them and leaves a lot of unanswered questions.
Thanks for the video. Is the back of the neck satin or gloss?
Satin. Very smooth, but shows scratches
Nice video! What about the in-between Sounds, especially in the single-coil-mode?
Thank you. I no longer have it. I wrote it primarily due to the confusion of the switching between channels. It’s not coil tap by any means.
Does it do it on all the digital sounds? If so, it’s the piezo. If not, could be that you need to increase the volume of that string in that patch in workbench hd. There should be a tiny wire leading down from the piezo to the interior of the string block. Is it detached?
Would you recommend this for heavy rock/metal?
Yes! Pickups are super tight! No different than Pickups from a Les Paul!
@@Donandjess0305 Thank you!
Makes no sense that should be a nu bone tusq nut
I was a little surprised about that as well.
how does this guitar tone compare to the les paul?
It’s about as heavy as a Les Paul, so tone is there from the body. Only difference are the pickups. These are active, so you’re going to get a little edgier as opposed to Burstbuckers, or The Gibson 490s. They try to tame these down as they are voiced to emulate classic PAFs.
@@Donandjess0305 im looking for that les paul standard sweet tone dont know if the fishman pickup produces that sound?
@@iwentt0jail I have a Les Paul Standard. I think it’s an edgier option.. hotter, but in my opinion? Not comparable. Still? Fluence pickups are awesome.
@@Donandjess0305 it sounds good but can it imitate the les paul if you play guns n roses solo
What happens when both knobs are pulled out? So far I haven't seen anyone clarify that
Nothing. Stays on voice 2
@@Donandjess0305 thanks!
Do you recommend this?
Great guitar. Very well made. Awesome pickups. Highly recommend!
That guitar is sick!
cool thanks for your help on that one... :-)
Idiot proof, up my alley.
its EMG not esp pickups.
Nice.... liked and subscribed..
that dog lol, Nice video
Great Review, was it factory setup? or do you set it up after you get it ?
cmartin1959 I set it up myself. Lots of videos on the website to figure it out. Set up out of the box? A bit high..
You need a guitar tech to install it (about $500 U.S and $700 Australian Dollars)
Greg Mullins He was asking about the setup, not the install. But you're right. It's a pretty complex install that frankly? I would be nervous to have someone do on one of my guitars!!
Good video, I'm thinking about getting this guitar (first New guitar In 10 years) But I am a fan of the more retro/vintage/obscure guitars...BUT! I am a huge Ben Wienman and Dillinger fan...This guitar seems to be a blend of all my favourite tastes both musically and in style
Thank you sir. Again, if you do? Research the Evertune. It's a very easy to use, but with each string individually tuned? You need to understand the action, and tension instructions on this.
+Donnie Diaz Actually glad you have bought this up as that is the only thing that complexes me about this guitar... would you be so kind to explain to me both how it physically works and technically with this ever tune system?
+Ab Dam it, simply put, a bridge that, if set up correctly, won't go out if tune..ever. Quality material.. Not as difficult as the Floyd Rose. You're simply string and tune the guitar. Setting the action, and intonation.. Very simple. Just getting comfortable take a bit. But.. It's not bad. I loved it.. I simply sold it because I had a student who wouldn't take no for an answer. Miss it though..
Hi Donnie, I found your review of the evertune quite interresting, and searched for the part 2 without success :). I would appreciate having your input about how well the evertune bridge handles heavy palm muting hand? I personnally have some issue with floating floyd rose trem from time to time, and I wonder if there is sufficiant area to rest the hand palm without pushing the rockers on this? TYIA.
+BlownPSP Evening! The Evertune is a mechanism that through no new technology, keeps the guitar in tune for a long time. The zone has two parts to it: The first one allows you to keep the strings in an area where you can keep it in tune, and you cant change the tone of the note your hitting. In other words? The more you bend it..the more you cant bend the note up. The second part of the zone allows you to bend the note up or down just like a normal guitar..but staying in complete tune. This in no way feels like a Floyd Rose. Where the Bridge on a floyd is floating above the body? The individual clamps float inside. Very comfortable for palm muting. The only downside is when you set up to whatever your tuning? You can go up and down from that tuning, but it will act like a normal guitar tuning wise. Plus? Your tension is set for that specific tuning, so there is more likely a chance to break strings. The set up take a littel time to get a hold of, but its not that difficult.hope that helps!
+Donnie Diaz Morning Donnie. Sure it helps, thanks for replying so quickly! When adjusted in Zone 2 where it is allowing the string to be bent (and heard!) , would you say that an heavy hand would still not affect the saddles to move and bend the string because of the hand palm load on the bridge? I am trying to figure out if I should stick to the usual fixed bridge (that I really like) because of my heavy picking hand du to heavy loads I put on the bridge itself via my hand palm. Personally, I would never tuned an Evertune bridge to prevent string bending to be heard. TYIA.
+BlownPSP Honestly? I'd stick with your set bridge, or even look into blocking the Floyd. I loved this guitar, but ended up selling it to a student because they really wanted it, and I really didn't have enough time to master the Evertune. Don't get me wrong..it's not like learning how to deal with a Floyd. But there's a major emphasis that you have to put on string gauge, and tension. It's my fault because I kept breaking strings. I needed to master string tension( i.e., string length, height, and tuning)..Palm muting is no different on this as it would be on a Gibson style bridge. This jut stays in tune better. Go to the Evertune RUclips page and watch the set up videos. If you have the time? I'd ya go for it. It's a great bridge for those that CB easily master.
+Donnie Diaz I do typically tuned my guitars myself, so yes I would have time to tune that Evertune bridge. So if it works just like a Gibson style fixed bridge, then I would be in business with the Evertune having an heavy hand when palm muting. I agree that Guitar is so nice. I would have buy it right away if its neck was satin or not painted. The friction between the skin and a clear coat painted neck can become... quite sticky when you're not used to it. Thanks again :) :)
Other than the pickup switch? I upgraded to Sperzel Tuners, chrome. I love this guitar
Sperzels are excellent tuners,Evertune is crap!!
Each to his own. It's a great system if you plan on leaving it on a specific tuning.
I just ordered this guitar this morning. I can't wait to get it. Everything about it absolutely suits my style. I already have the LTD M1000 evertune guitar so I've been playing with an evertune for quite some time and love it. I'll never go back to other bridges.
Thank you. I'm a local private guitar instructor, and I do my best to be as clear and concise as I can be. I know my student appreciate it. Thank you for watching!
Finally! Someone who broke it down to me like I'm 5 years old. I hate it when people give a "tutorial" by playing the song straight through and saying, "alright good luck guys. Please subscribe." Thank you very much!
Thanks! this really helped me alot, im going to play this song live in about a week so this video kinda saved me! again, thanks!
Donny...You make it look so easy and effortless!
