Acoustics Theory for Drum Tuning: Tuning the Pitch of a Drum
Просмотров 3 тыс.3 года назад
The fundamental frequency, which we call 'F0' is excited most when the drum is hit at the middle and sounds like a BOOM. We use the F0 fundamental (centre frequency) to set the overall pitch of the drum. This can be high for Jazz type drumming or low for Rock style drumming, and anywhere in between too. Every drum has a range between the drumhead being too slack or too tight, so there are lots o...

Useless for android users
nice. app looks handy
I like it, two things I would ideally want, custom groups of rudiments so i can go through my warm up routine with the accuracy and measurement stats of individual rudiments i.e. 4 bars single, 4 bars double, 4 bars paradiddle, etc and repeat. But also a count in, to be ready to start as soon as the stats measurements start.
poderia criar para android tambem, fica a dica.
This is such a great app. Super easy to use, no nonsense and actually works very well
Thanks! This is great ☀️
What does the 170.5 mean in the lug tuning vs the 100 when you were pitch tuning?
Also while you have the heads off find the pitch of the shells. Dw actually prints the shells note inside the drum. The ideal note for both heads is the frequency of the shells. That's how Mitch Mitchell got his sound playing with Hendrix in the experience. But when recording tune the heads to notes in the song.
Had my DW for almost 7 years and didnt know that thank you!
Can you please help me on that
Hi I mailed you regarding some doubt
Why write RTF values instead of intervals, if you know that's what you're aiming for? It should read "3rd, 4th, 5th" etcetera.
I've been wondering why it skips 15" rack tom.
no sound?
Thanks for presenting this in such a clear and understandable way. As somebody with an in depth acoustic and music technological background, but no personal drum playing experience, this lecture was a great way to improve my recording sessions by taking a familiar type of knowledge and format and applying this to (what used to be) quite an imposing instrument. I'm really excited to use the app going forward in my sessions.
how usefull is the RTF for handdrums with only a single head?
With the lug tuning I had green all round [+1-0.5] guessing that’s fine lol
I have this app. I found it not very intuitive and the instructions are not good at all. I get the impression it was written by someone who knew what they were doing but who wasn’t perhaps so good at getting this across to others. For example - I was wound to screaming point in frustration because I couldn’t work out how to change the number of lugs on the drum (it defaults to 6). Watching this vid, I see that you slide a bar across the bottom of the lug tuning screen. Great. It wasn’t obvious to me - and try finding that anywhere in the instructions or the tutorials or…. Anywhere.
I was hoping you could use the spectrum analyzer to illustrate the difference in the frequency content. I wonder how much the different heads contribute to the slight differences. Do you know how the shell affects the timbre (i.e. frequency content of the overall sound we hear)? I think what we hear is coming from the drums heads; they are doing the real work of moving the air and creating the sounds waves we hear. We're playing the head not the shell ("the heads are the speakers and the shell is the speaker cabinet"). I don't think we are hearing anything directly from the shell. If that is true (?) then is the shell acting as a filter and just bleeding off energy from the head and reducing the fundamental (which has the highest amplitude), or is the shell somehow introducing more harmonic content into the head, or depending on the shell construction (and ability to vibrate and absorb energy) the shell might leave the fundamental alone and attenuate more of the harmonics? I believe if the shell was very thick vs. very thin for example, same tonewood, the thick shell would absorb far less energy from the head whereas a thin shell (which seems to be the thing these days) would absorb much more of the energy and have more of an affect on the frequency content in the head, and thus the timbre. Thick shell would be have a stronger fundamental and be louder. I think capturing the PSD (power spectral density) plots under controlled conditions could explain and illustrate what is going on and show how different shell types affect the sound and to what degree. Thx
Thank you Rob. I am using iDrumTune Pro and finding it very helpful. I am an engineer playing drums and wanted to understand the physics behind tuning a drum. My conclusion is that for my one set of drums I would like to save the lug frequency and head type for each drum in a given preset, not just F0 and F1. Is that something you might consider adding to your app?
agree!!
Single-handedly debunked the pitches labeled on DW shells 👏 👏 👏 This is exactly the technical engineering information I’ve been searching for. Thank you!
I love this app, but crazy issue with 16" floor tom. I followed you exactly in this video, when I check pitch, I get over 200 Hz consistently (mostly in the 260 Hz range). I know it isn't that high but I don't know what is going on.
i have been using the app for over 4 months now and i love it. i just wish i have something to put my phone on close to the snare or tom i am tuning so. Having the phone in one hand is kinda hard but still best tool you can find. i like it
What about snare side head? How you tune them? Center hz and lug hz?
The app doesn't work on my iPhone 10 is that normal? The mic is not reading anything. The "Pitch tuning" says it's listening but not giving a response. For an $8.99 app to not work at all is disappointing.
This happened on my iPad mini. I re-installed the app and was sure to allow the app Microphone access, and it resolved it.
Hi there! I got the 3 pack app few days ago and start to play w it. I found it good. It will be good to have a feature that you ask for a desired RTF and tells you the right lugs hz to apply. Btw possibility of saving your kit it’s ok,but i can’t find the possibility to save top and reso lug pitch. This will make the job faster. I just ask, in the past we supposed to get the max resonance with top and reso at the same lug pitch A0x1.75 both head, than we can assume a0x1.5 top & A0x1.85 reso. This is the Rtf 1.5. What we call high resonance. This works perfect as i have pinstripe on top and reso. Can you advice some “sounding good” Rtf for a medium and low resonance? Btw, can you advice some tips for a specific tuning if we play in a recording studio or in small club, as in an arena? Fine lug tuning is very hard to be achieved, as a very tiny tiny key moving it may vary a lot of hz, how can we reach a perfect 1.5?it can be good obtain a 1.48 to 1.52? Many thx for your job, well done!
How do you tune the reso head? You tune the batter head from low, to a G, then past an A then back down but you don't do any note on the reso? I don't understand...
Me neither
Hidden gem of a video in a sea full of tuning tutorial RUclips videos. Just got your app man and I’m just started tuning my toms and they already sounding more like toms. Good stuff sir
The principles explained here come as close to a universal theory of drum tuning as we are likely to get. If I have understood it properly, the video explains the musical relationships between the resonant head, the batter head and its two major frequencies that vibrate at the centre and edge of the drum head. In the end what sounds pleasing to any drummer is subjective. But this instruction along with the very useful app can be a key to making the collective frequencies of your drum work together produce rich tone and resonance.
Is there any chance to hear, say, F2 or F3 by going even further to the rim?
Another great video, thank you! I like my resonant heads tighter than the batter heads-do you have a suggestion for the separation differential for musicality? Thanks, Mark
for us,,, resonant freq,,, measured on top or bottom is identical,,,, how u get non same
I don’t understand the two different metronome modes. When I use the one on the right, that looks like a drum, i am more accurate. When I use the one on the left, that looks like a metronome, my scores are not accurate at all. Can you do a tutorial covering those two modes?
Thank you so much - this is so helpful. I've been playing a few years but tuning my whole set has been continuously frustrating to me. All other youTube videos and even so-called "tutorials" on drum sites (I don't actually have a "human" instructor) show how to tighten lugs evenly but then oversimplify the rest, and act like using a tuner is the most "uncool" thing a drummer could ever do. This app has given me a better foundational starting point and has helped me get all of the drums sounding good in relation to each other. I understand that tuning is a bit of a personal preference, but, like I said, this has helped me get to a nice solid starting point with the whole set working well in relation to each other.
the amount of value here… in this day and age!!.. Also considering drum-dial, and tune-bot prices,.. its remarkable seeing overtones. It verifies what i thought the whole time. I went 20 years questioning my ear. I could EASILY tune a guitar for example. But what was going on with drums? Am I hearing the fundamental at lug?.. or an overtone?.. I was right!!j op
this is an absolute dream… ive played drums just over 20 years.. NEVER really had tuned drums. Till these mechanisms and apps came along. I bought drum dial and used last 7-days.. WOWWWW!!! I canNOT tel you how good it feels to finally have such inspiring sounds coming from your movements!! To go 20 years with the warbling (eventually covered w/ tape, etc. which sounded ok… ish). This past week is still an analog machine that needs certain conditions to provide extremely accurate, and precise results… STILL works.. pretty dang well.. This app is unbelievable tho!.. Havent used yet.. bought it, loaded, and am gonna mess w/ this week w
I tried but it was not possible to tune a floor tom for jazz (c3 note) and keeping the RTF around 1.5 without having the resonant extremely tight
🔥🔥🔥 thanks a lot!
hi will it also be for android?
No Android?
Bro, 4k views and not one comment
How come you don’t have to muffle the bottom head while tuning the top? Isn’t the bottom head having an effect on the pitch of the top head?
Hi, if you muffle the other head then you effectively create a different instrument - the drumheads work together to make the sound of the drum, so it needs to be tuned with the same acoustic principles as how it will be played. For more info on the resonant drumhead and how it affects the drum sound take a look at our tutorials at www.idrumtune.com/learn
How come you don't have to muffle the resonant head while doing the lug tuning on the batter head?
Hi Brian - if you muffle one head while tuning you change the acoustic properties of the drum, so there's no benefit to dampening one drumhead. The two drumheads work together, so if you muffle one head you are effectively tuning a different instrument, that will sound totally different when the muffling is removed. That's why it's generally best to tune drums in position as they will be played, or on a snare stand for easier access, but with both heads vibrating freely.
very interesting thanks, I wondered about the importance of trying to tune to the pitch of the shell itself, so thanks for clarifying. Just downloaded your app, excellent thanks
Fantastic. Do you have more videos. I see the app is 6.99 Seems well worth it for such a pain to tune my drums. A neophyte here. I need all the help I can get.
What fundamental frequency is typical of a reso head if my fundamental frequency on the batter head is 160 Hz? What frequency of the reso head would be good? Preferably keeping the RTA 1.5 (meaning the batter lugs would be 240 Hz)?
Rob, any possibilty of you performing this assessment again, only using the same batter/reso heads for all the drums?
Very useful! Thanks a lot
