The Wisconsin Gravel Cyclist
Добавлен 17 апр 2022
Hi, my name is Logan. I live in central Wisconsin where I enjoy riding the back roads on my Trek Checkpoint Gravel bike. Come along for a ride with me while I explore what Wisconsin has to offer from the scenic gravel back roads to riding the road as an ambassador for Trek Store of Wausau, Wisconsin.
Iron Bull Recon Ride: School forest 2024
Here is a small section of the IronBull Red Granite Grinder in Wausau, WI. The muddy section does look to have been removed from the route as of 9/25/2024. Enjoy listening to the banter !!!

Michigan Coast to Coast Gravel Grinder 100: My First DNF

Here is my 1st attempt at the Michigan Coast to Coast Gravel Grinder 100! This was an amazing experience... except for the weather. What stood in between me and finishing 100 miles of Michigan gravel in the Manistee national forest? 3 inches of rain.

Kronenwetter Forest Unit and Leather Camp KOM Attempt (With Commentary)
Thinking of doing this race next year would be first race ever.
Looks fun! Last year was too smooth.
My friend and I couldn’t even walk on that part when we were in there with our dogs.
Logan, is this the really wet and muddy section of the connector between Red Bud and the Forest Rd. to Hollywood? Last Friday?
Guess I didn't pay attention to the title. I recognized the School Forest bridge and then the ridge trail that I crashed on 2 yrs in a row.
@@philmahoney7220 They did change the course already though. They removed the mud section fortunately.
I raced that day as well! Ended my ride at the store before the checkpoint, had no brakes as well!! Maybe next time!
If you were spending your own money on an upgraded set of rims for the sl5, would you go for these now for $1700 or would the Terra C set for $750 make more sense? Btw, did you upgrade the cassette on this bike from stock?
If I were buying for an SL5 now I would definitely go for the 37V. Reasons being 1. They are much lighter. 2 they have a 108 point of engagement hub. This is noticeable at higher speeds and loose terrain. 3. The 37V is far more comfortable and compliment than the Terra c. Especially on rough terrain. If budget is on the mind the Terra c is a nice deal at $750. They are also pretty robust. Thus the added weight. But overall I would recommend the 37V if you are able.
Terrible sound. Broken sprocket.
It has 108 points of engagement... It is meant to sound that way... you think this sounds bad listen to an i9 hub. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
@@thewisconsingravelcyclist 100 or 1000, it doesn't matter. For me it is too loud. It doesn't sounds like normal sprocket. Producers should thik about to silence down it.
I just got the forge + bond shift CR45 wheels, which I think are made in the same factory using the same process. I have not ridden my wheels yet, glad to hear you like wheels that may be similar.
Where is this primo gravel?
This is just west of Wausau, Wisconsin by about 15 minutes!
Thank You
Thank You
Which GoPro do you have? Most newer ones can have voice acivation to start recording if you can't use your hands.
I have a her 12 black. Unfortunately I must have an issue with mine as that feature doesn’t work on mine. Might need to update the firmware or something. Will have to work on that for future events. Wahoo also has a way to integrate their bolt and roam for controlling the go pro as well now! I haven’t had a chance to play with that yet.
Just watched this and the CL video. Seems like you’d go with the C over the CL for a gravel setup? Is that about right?
I would yes. Maybe if your a hard core racer and looking to save weight then the cl is ok but it’s honestly a better road wheel then gravel.
Beautiful scenery!
Looks a lot like south central Wisconsin without the bluffs. Hello from Sauk County
This is just south of Wausau! Thanks for stopping by!
👋🏽 🇬🇧
that's not a bike, that's an automobile. the Trek headlight commuter pro RT is a must for that truck you got and Pirelli cinturato 45's
😂. These are only 40s on this bike. 45s going on soon though .
Nice video. I got a 56 cm checkpoint and I’m 5’ 9” it fits and has room but I’m worried it’s a littttle big. What size is yours?
I ride a 52. I’m 5”8 to 5”9 depending on the measurement. 30 inch inseam. I’m in between a 52 and 54 and went 52 because of the stand over height and the reach. I normally say to size down one size on a checkpoint unless you have rode that size and determined it works for you.
@@thewisconsingravelcyclist Thanks for the reply. It feels oddly comfortable because my old bike felt cramped. But I'm basically at the 30 day return policy and haven't been on a ride longer than 2 hours. Luckily the 2 hour long ride felt fine and no pain. I will say the larger frame feels a little less nimble and it's not as easy to throw the bike around. But it feels good on the roads and at high speeds. It's such a tough decision.
Hey Logan! Do you have any GPX of your gravel rides? I am new to Wisconsin (Milwaukee) and looking for gravel adventures. Thanks in advance
I will post a couple this evening when I have a chance. Thanks for the comment and have a great day!
When you have some time to drive north for a weekend or something this is a great one! ridewithgps.com/trips/132124096
Nice. I'm deciding on a fx sport 6 or the checkpoint
get checkpoint, its so much faster
Website only has 600/800 GRX parts listed? I bought the same one though. Def a fun ride. Happy trails, fellow goth paint scheme trek rider!
They may have changed it but at one point they were using 400 brake calipers.
About to pull the trigger on an SL-5 Checkpoint. Also looking at the Lauf Seigla. I might have to take you up on the riding in the Wausau area. I am from Wausau.
Wausau Wheelers has gravel rides every Monday starting at Nine Mile County forest! I try to be there most weeks. Would be great to have more people join.
I thought the ruby red granite on the roads look familiar ;) I have my bike choice narrowed to the SL-6 checkpoint, and the Lauf Seigla. Trek really seams like a nice bike.
Big plans! Good luck Logan, hope you have a great season :)
Magnifique Chanson...!! toute notre jeunesse...!!
LOVE JOHN DENVER MUSIC
Enjoy ❤👍🏽
Beautiful. How wonderful to be able to share their ride with us.
It really is!

I was scrolling and recognized the song from one note
I love this song
Great song !
I need to get out there! I had studded tires on the front of my fat bike and only needed it for one ride so far this winter!
My wife and I love this trail ❤
Good Year, Logan!
Thanks Rob! Looking forward to seeing you out on that new bike in 2024.
Nice Work, Logan!
Great Vid.
Nice video Logan! I’m glad Fawn was a bit smoother for everyone than the week before :)
Nice work, Logan ... both your ride and this video !! I hope to do this one again next year along with a few others.
Nice video, Logan!
Nice comments, certainly good to upgrade the seat and tires. I went with Specialized seat and tires, can’t wait to take it back into the Trek store for its one year tune up, lol.
I love the color. I am about to buy a checkpoint.
lol they put GRX400 parts on the SL5
Performance isn't any different then GRX 600 or 800. Weight is the only thing that changes 🤷♂. Thanks for the comment on the video and have a good one!
What is the name of the bolt you use to fill the bosses?
They are the Terske Blanking screws. I found them on amazon. I needed two packages for all bosses. Thanks for the comment!
Enjoying the vid, then the crappy rappy music came on, had to mute it for a while.
Thanks for the comment. Will try to not put as much music in next time. 👍
Nice job! Bob was in our group at the Wheeler ride from Sawmill.
Cool to get a view of the race, thanks Logan.
I've had great experience with these wheels. They came stock on my CruX. I've ran 38 pathfinder tires (gravel, stock) and 32s gp 5000s (road), both tubeless, and never had an issue on any terrain. Love the weight. Great hubs.
Thanks for the great videos. I have the same Trek SL5. I would like to get the Terske Self Locking nuts. Could you please put a link to the mountain screws in the chat? Sorry, but it is difficult to see in the video.
Heres the link! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment!! www.amazon.com/dp/B09LMNVTTN?ref=nb_sb_ss_w_as-reorder-t1_k1_1_6&=&crid=2JN4ZOWCZFO72&=&sprefix=terske
Looks like we feel pretty similar about this bike! I got an SL5 a month ago and I am in love. The bike I had been riding was an older Giant Defy Advanced 2 carbon and while I loved the bike it was just always so twitchy for me... had to keep my guard up all the time.... never felt very comfortable riding hands free for example. The checkpoint is freaking amazing I just can't believe how smooth and comfortable it is and it just goes wherever you point it period. Like I said I am in love -- I feel like I am rediscovering the joy of cycling again. I'm less interested in dueling with cars these days and have dirt roads and rail trails and other trails nearby and I'm loving it. Cars suck. Unless one wants to race, or do real mountain biking, this is an outstanding do-it-all bike without major compromises... Even as a road bike I'd never want to ride a road frame again because the Checkpoint is just SO SOLID AND COMFORTABLE! I was excited to get a new bike, but it has blown away my expectations.
