Restorer Lukas Nel's last two masterpieces before retiring. NGG11 No.52 and NG10 No.61, restored in 2017 and 2019 respectively. No.52 is the second oldest and the oldest working Garratt in the world.

NGG 16s Nos 113 & 153 among the cosmos on the mountain section of the Sandstone 2 foot gauge railway in the Eastern Free State. Thanks to Geoff Trains, the photographic organisers and above all the crews and shed staff for getting up early. Hand held camera so there's a bit of shaking.

Well, the Class 25nc# 3437 is, in fact, an oil burner and no longer going for coal anymore.
It was burning coal last July, and I doubt a subsequent conversion to oil is affordable.
Magnificent! No coal is visible in the tender. Has 3437 been converted to fuel-oil?
Why does it keep losing traction?
Class 25 had major issues with wheelslip
Engines like the class 25 tend to slip due to them having a lot of roller bearings But that was one of the many teething troubles of this class

There are plenty of videos of the 25C in action during the 1980s. I will try to source one for you.
Apparently the didn't 'chuff' they whined as the steam was not expelled.
But i could sit here for the rest of my life only looking at steam locos.

Look at that! No diesel helper! Seems like there should be a caboose since a steam train needs more people.

I was at Sandstone in 2019 also 2017 /15/14. You could say that I am something of an addict. I live in Cape Town now, but lived near Port Elizabeth & regularly used to go photograph & ride behind these locos. It was great to see them working plus some of the other even older locos. that they have there.

I'm sure she won't. I wonder how she is doing now. When I did the Elgin trip in March she unfortunately wasn't available to run with Dominique so we had to have a diesel act as the second loco. It was actually great to have steam and diesel working together that day because with Dominique leading the way going out It felt like I was on a train that was completely different to the boring electrics we see every day and with the diesel leading the way coming back it felt like the diesel was bringing me back to reality in a way.
