Dying Zen Teacher Talks About Death, Part I (Daishin David Brighton)
Where are you David?
playing dress-up. look at me, I'm a Zen master... see, I have a robe and a doohickey on my apron, and everything. Chan came to japan and became Zen, but the japanese masters didn't wear Chinese clothes. Dhyana come from india and became chan but the Chinese masters didn't put on Indian clothes. what are they thinking ? what, are they thinking ? what are they , thinking? Just this. A finger pointing at the moon.
If you had any idea about the history of Chan and Zen, you'd be embarrassed by the ignorance of your comment.
@@ZenAndPsychedelicHealingCenter of what am I ignorant specifically?
Great❤
Amazing man. I hope these vlogs help other's like its helped me.
Great teacher. I saw a comment below stating he's still alive and well...would love to see a new video from Prajna Zendo! :)
My teacher says - The Shobogenzo is a terrible book because it explains things clearly about the koans to give away its great show!
Your teacher seems to have no idea what the Shobogenzo is.
Amazing❤
Great vlog. These wise teachings can help so many of us.
Very insightful
Byyyy a white guy.
I prefer the latter version: the Spirit of the ghost is balanced with the opposite understanding which is zen balanced, then the pupil challenges the Spirit on the Ghost by saying now save the Ghost because their is the understanding of the Ghost and the balance between them..?
Reality as I perceive it, is always a personal delusion - so in reality as it is, we are always one with our delusions.
Even this perception or thought must then be another delusion. Your move :)

If you're still there teacher a point of perspective is pick up a leaf and find it's front back bottom or top. Then when you find them the whole perspective of the universe can be seen from that leaf.

To reveal a koan is the same as to explain a joke. Useful to the mentally retarded but pointless for the rest of the world....
Very mental approach to something much more transparent. Everyone is a ghost and doesn't even know it. That's the great emptiness of everything. Once it is seen, the ghost in you can repeat its usual patterns and be seen for just that. The ghost is then naturally allowed to be as it is, without a new for change, it is therefore saved. The teacher puts to much emphasis on human beings, reinforcing the notion of self which is the opposite of such koan's objective...
This man is an arrogant ass!
The Sound of One Hand is NOT a translation of a book by Sogaku Harada Roshi.
The sound of 1 hand clapping was created by the renowned Japanese Zen Master Hakuin!
Knowing the language of the original kōan would be useful, assuming the relevant verse wasn't composed in English.
Not really.
Thank you.
Shortest koan, longest explanation
What is even a bigger help for zen students, is to know that koans are not that effective in generating insight.
@@goggles0_0 Whoa there, sunshine.
There is nothing that needs to be generated.
Cool story bro.
BOO!
Yikes!
Thank you kindly 💚 This might sound hard to believe, but I've just seen that Sri Avinash in Australia is now transmitting the enlightened state to members of the public, he calls it the satori transmission. 🙌 People are experiencing a taste of enlightenment because of him within minutes. It just seems so rare and precious that I had to share about it. He's full on doing it. Go check it out! #sriavinashsatoritransmission 💛💚
Good posting.... keep-up the good work.... May I share a Haiku for Niccolo Machaivelli in RUclips wvCgu9ByhJc
let your ghosts leave and say all ghosts are free. ghosts are non exisctant. they only exist in mind. you are neither your mind nor your body.
he says im going to tell you and why. ba ha. a dead twig gets a live flower. he says i am . you shouldnt. dumb words should would could. he or she who uses these words should could would needs
What?
the 101 origanal koans can be studied.
how cool is the complete study. fuck the teachers find your own secrecy is information shrouded by liars and thieves. Andrew Hibberd
To speak this way with bravery, openness and compassion 2 weeks after knowing his death sentence pretty much sums this man up for me. Gasho!
me myself and I...
is David still alive ? I hope so.
Yes, he is
Brilliant!
Always listen to someone with terminal diagnosis, they speak with authority and authenticity like no others can. Btw, we're all terminal
Lol WTF my last name koan and I ain't heard of this shit
I like where he says he's fortunate to think about his impending death. You have decades to live, but only a single moment to die. Living is cheap, death is what has value, because it only happens once
and what if its all bullshit again, designed to keep the more perceptive amongst any population busy _'sitting'_?
Who is asking and who will be answering?
Too Much Drama
Zen and George Carlin are finally one! J/K, they always were!
is he drinking coke?
11:15 label of death to separate
18:20 Glass that is already broken
seems scared doesn't knows Zen
I am loving Daishin Sensei's teachings. Skies of thanks.
so boring...
excellent teaching.
I appreciated your talk very much. Good historical perspectives on this issue and I gained understanding. Thank you.
What is MU-GA though?
Years ago I had viewed this particular talk from Daishin Sensei, and I keep finding myself occasionally coming back when I fall into the contemplation of death. Thank you so much for this elegant and sincere talk. It has helped me immensely, and opened my eyes to some great new books. Wishing you peace and calm, always.
please stay for tea and cookies yes ma'am
