Most ADHD users struggle with Obsidian, but not for the reasons you might think. After surveying thousands of note-takers and coaching hundreds of writers, I discovered a surprising truth about why we overcomplicate our PKM systems.
In this video, I share how studying a "messy" professor's analog note-taking system helped me transform my relationship with Obsidian and turn my scattered thoughts into valuable content. Learn why fighting against your brain with complex workflows isn't the answer, and how a ...

    So where can I find the original source of Prof. Luhmann that shown on your video?

    Here is the rephrased version of my Comment: You are too slow. Take the book, open NotebookLM, and ask it the four questions from *"How to Read a Book: The Classical Guide to Intelligent Reading"*. Record a video of NotebookLM's answers, or create a Tldraw map with the content provided by NotebookLM. Make sure the outline includes the following structure: 1. **What is the book about (classification)?** 2. **An outline of the book** (major parts, sub-parts, and sub-sub-parts in a structured hierarchy). 3. **The problems the book is trying to solve.** **Do not read the book now**-just record a video or take ShareX screenshots of NotebookLM's output and organize the content into a Tldraw map if you prefer. Personally, I like to organize the outline into a map that can be moved around and adjusted. --- ### Step 1: Preparing the Text - Go through each paragraph of the book. - Read *only* the first words or skim through it at lightning speed to determine if the paragraph stands alone or connects to others. - Take screenshots of each paragraph (or connected paragraphs). Use OCR software to extract the text from these screenshots. For each paragraph, feed the text into a large language model (AI) and ask it the following: 1. **Summarize as briefly as possible.** 2. **Rephrase the text for clarity.** 3. **What is the text arguing about?** 4. **What are the premises and conclusion in a logical structure?** 5. **What are the key points in as few words as possible?** 6. **Provide a straightforward overall explanation.** Insert this output directly below the corresponding paragraph. Repeat for each paragraph in the book. --- ### Step 2: First Reading (Preparation Review) Now that you’ve prepared the material, it’s time for your first read-through. This is an overview of the book, not an in-depth read. - **Read the overall summaries** of each paragraph instead of the full text. This will allow you to read the entire book faster while still understanding its structure and content. - Focus on speed, but not excessively-just enough to save time while retaining clarity. - Use the outline you created to stay oriented while reading. Pay special attention to chapter titles and their corresponding locations in the outline. - Read through the NotebookLM answers carefully to gain an overview of the book’s structure and arguments. Aim to finish this first reading in under 2 hours (depending on the book). Don’t take notes during this phase-if you must write something, limit it to quick comments or reactions like, *"Oh, interesting, I hadn’t thought of that."* Keep your writing fast and informal. --- ### Step 3: Second Reading (In-Depth) For the second reading, you’ll dive deeper into the book’s actual text using the prepared material. Follow this order for each paragraph: 1. Read the **overall summary** first. 2. Then read the **one-sentence summary**. 3. Finally, read the **original paragraph**. - If the original paragraph is poorly written or overly complex, switch to the **rephrased version**. - If certain sections of the rephrased text are still unclear, use an OCR tool (e.g., dpscreenOCR) to extract specific phrases or sentences. Feed these into an AI model and ask it to further rephrase them for clarity. Once you understand the paragraph, read: - **What the text is arguing about.** - **The premises and conclusion.** - **The key points.** Move on to the next paragraph, repeating this process. --- ### Step 4: Reading Mindset In this second reading, take your time. Focus on understanding and clarity rather than speed. The goal is to work through the book thoroughly and thoughtfully. - Always have a pen and paper handy to jot down thoughts or observations. - Use this reading to trigger ideas, connections, or notes. Don’t worry about structure-just let the book inspire you to write. - If you get tired or need a break, stop reading and mark your place with a comment. You can always return later. --- ### Step 5: Cross-Reading and Writing Read multiple books on the same subject in parallel. Think of each book as a tool to spark ideas and connections. The more you write, the better. When writing, follow your usual process-whether it’s Zettelkasten, free notes, or another method. Here’s my process: 1. **Take notes** during or after reading. 2. **Re-read and annotate** those notes. 3. **Edit and refine** the notes. 4. **Test the notes**-challenge them, critique them, and see if they hold up. 5. If the notes survive this process, move them to a **connection vault**. Use simple tools (e.g., Grepwin) to search for related content and connect notes. 6. Once confident, move the notes to a **storage vault**-a long-term archive for ideas that have proven valuable. --- This approach ensures that your reading is highly efficient and that your notes are clear, actionable, and well-organized. By preparing the material in advance, you transform even complex books into something easy to read, understand, and connect with other ideas.

      Non-rephrased version of my comment: you are too slow. take the book use NotebookLM ask it the 4 questions you ask each book from "How to read a book: The classical guide to intelligent reading". record a video of the NotebookLM answers.. or make a Tldraw MAP with the content given by notebookLM. just make sure in the outline the book question, make sure you ask it to outline by major parts and then the parts of major parts and the the part of the part of major parts in a structured way. (classify, what the book is about, outline, the problems the book is trying to solve). now don't read it... just record a video or take Sharex Screenshots and organize it into a tldraw map if you want. I usually just organize the outline into a map that I can move around. again do not read anything then go through each paragraph, read the first words or read it as lightning speed as possible, see if it's a stand alone paragraph or does it connect to the other paragraph and take screenshots of each or connected paragraphs. take the screenshot to OCR to extract the text. give the text to a large language model(ai) tell it to "summarize as briefly as possible: rephrase the text for clarity: what is the text arguing about: give me the preemies of the text and the conclusion in a logical way: give me the key poitn(s) in as little words as possible: overall in a straight forward manner: " and then insert this bellow the paragraph you copied. do that for each paragraph of the book. Now it's time to read, now you did preparations right, this time you will read your preparations in 2 ways. the first way is reading through the overall .... you will not read the paragraph but the overall of each paragraph. this will save you time and also make you read the whole book in less time. focus on speed but not too much speed reading also the overall is writing in a straightforward manner anyway and because you have the outline in front of you you won't get lost. make sure you read the chapters and title carefully and read the notebookiLM answers carefully and each time you are in a new chapter or a chapter that you've read, go to the outline and find where it is then continue reading. YOU SHOULD FINISH IN LESS THAN 2hrs but it depends on the type of the book. so give it what it deserves. Don't take notes or write. if you are going to write write only comments about the book that shouldn't be taken seriously. like oh interesting I've never thought about that. again please don't write too much and if you are going to write something focus on speed and fast keyboard writing Now it's time to start over... now your 2nd reading this is where you will read the actual paragraphs. you will read in the following order... you will read the first sentence in overall, then to the 1 sentence of summary. to the actual paragraph. if you feel confident about you reading then go to the rephrase section, if the original paragraph the author wrote it badly or it's just too complex for you because of many reasons then re-read not the paragraph but the rephrased version of it. and if you quite don't understand certain sections of the rephrased text like certain sentences or phrases then use simple OCR software like dpscreenOCR, simple program.. just move mouse over the section and it gets it to your clipboard and copy past it to LLM and tell it to rephrase. ok so now read what it argues about and the premises and conclusion. then read the key poitns. Move to the next paragraph. and do the same this way you are reading a version of the book that is overly prepared that is clear and easy to read no matter what it is. you can skip to the premesses and arguments if you want but I recommend to read everything this way because the 2nd reading is about taking your time at reading, have the mindset that it doesn't matter how long it takes and potentially next time you will re-read. the 2nd reading version I described here is where you always have a pen and paper with you or you would be reading to trigger something to make you write some stuff initially then yeah... you can read. stop reading and mark where you left with a comment. go read something else . come back... take your time. read multiple books covering the same problems at the same time this way.... think of the book as something that will trigger you to type. the more you type the better. then you do your writing process whatever it is... Zetlecastian or what not... for me I siimply take notes, re-read and anotate. edit those notes. test those notes. criticice them. then if they survived then you go to my connection vault. leave them there and from time to time read them to see if they make any connections to other notes using software that searches based on the content of the notes, simple stuff like Grepwin that's all. Make connections. gather 5 or 10 depending on if I feel confident or not. then move them to my Storage vault. it's a storage to everything I wrote that survived the process.

    I have downloaded the vault listed in the description however it is nothing like this tutorial, which makes it incredibly hard to follow along and understand. In this tutorial you are referencing a second brain vault however what is listed in the description is a flow vault. The structure is not the same as the tutorial, the daily notes are not the same, the logbook is not the same, even the welcome note doesn't match what you show in this video. Do I have the wrong vault or is there a more up to date tutorial?

    • @TonyRamella
      @TonyRamella 6 дней назад

      Yes, the vault got updated since this video with feedback from my community. The major changes were just the name of the vault and the folder structure. Everything else works the same as this video, the journal index (daily notes hub) is the same. Logbook has been split up into separate logs for scalability since dataview will cause issues over time if you have all those logs in one file. There were some slight changes to the daily notes template (the quotes prompt stopped working so I removed it) but the logs are still the same. I will be publishing a video walkthrough of everything very soon. Sorry for the confusion!

    I see you guys try to start with less and built into more... while my approach is going for more anything more that is relevant and useful but with enough words... not too many and not too little... give it what it deserves. then I refine it and add relevant stuff. share it and receive feedback refine it and rephrase and delete and structure better. this way it makes it less and makes it more as well but with better stuff. so everything contributes to 1 idea no matter how little or long it is, the main point is make it structured and easy to read and is solid and closer to something that you know. connect it to relevant ideas or anything that is relevant. send it to the box and re-connect it with anything that is relevant in there. the only rule is to not force connection. then use the Box as your google search in terms of title or content using tools search as grepwin or cursor ai or just simply the solid obsidian sorching and sorting and visualizing or a combination of both. the ideas in the BOX help you make and understand stuff better when dealing with things like Language, life stuff, research, programing problems, memorizing things that actually matter...etc so the rule for the box is brainstroming that's all. unlike other vaults where the focus is on specefic stuff where as the box doesn't have those limitations

  • @Dex_1M
    @Dex_1M 7 дней назад

    I need to copy and past. I need to upload and draw, I need to record and concat bits and pieces... I need to make a whiteboard. I need ai to rephrase the random stuff I write and give me arguments. I need automation scripts to help me automate the mindless empty templates the mindless specefic commenting and the way I do things ;******************blah blah****************** ;******************blah blah END****************** or ;[# _1]************************************ ;;[# _1];[# _2]************************************ ;;[# _1];[# _2]****************** END****************** ;[# _1]****************** END****************** I need symboles... that note or card no matter how perfect it is... It will be edited non stop... refined over and over and over and over... and upgraded and down graded over and over. key points inserted , arguments inserted summary of each section... removing parts making it finished idea or unfinished at anytime The only rule is that is it a 1 idea... and it is not a book full of ideas. that I leave it for when I want to make something with my zettlcasitan notes.... if you are interested in what I'm talking about check my channel I got some videos explaining the process and what I'm talkinga bout

    • @Dex_1M
      @Dex_1M 7 дней назад

      I understand your point... so the constrains of the paper and the size and the physical aspect of it and knowing that you don't have the tools that you have right... it will force you to take your first note creation in a unique way... but it's too slow .... by the time I finish 1 fleeting note... and copy past it to phone (I can do OCR and ftp share it from phone to pc and OCR right to save time) I would have made 5 or 3... also it interrupts my process of consuming media... because as you see it's not about taking ntoes it's about reading as well... and when I'm interrupting my reading too much to take notes because the physical world is too slow (you need a keyboard to type with 10 fingers and even if you got a type writer when you reference you need to write what you referenced in a lengthy way for e.g. describing an image ....etc when you could have just took a screenshot real quick or recorded an audio or copy pasted right easily) and so yeah.... I see the advantages and disadvantages... maybe I'll include it not in the first file creation but in a later process where the friction and the constraint of the paper actually matter... but that's probably never. again you are giving up a lot... such as fast writing speed (if you know how to write at 80wph), an autocorrector script that follows you as you write whatever in your mind, microsoft word for fast grammar correction....etc The main focus should be communicating your first idea into the fleeting note and inserting empty templates such as --- tags: aliases: File Creation: 2024-12-27 22:46 Last Modified: 2024-12-27 22:46 File folder: why if why: --- # {Then you write whatever right} also the titling of the note doesn't matter at first you name it whatever right like Title-iorewoiaruewaoire... and the titling of the content inside doesn't matter as well at certain time right. then as you go you re-read it to remember what you meant when you first wrote it. if it has no meaning you re-read it again right which will make you make more fleeting notes or add meaning right .... then you make comments to the future you to like what do you wanna check. what things to correct umm like give it to ai to help you give it a tag or a title.. umm maybe add more here or search more here. then you edit it, you edit and the way you edit is basically rephrasing phrase by phrase and adding depth and strengthening the note right also trying to make comments and sections inside the headings right. even add arguments and keypoints and overall for the later you so he can have easier time re-reading right so to make it easy to connect to relevant other notes right. then after everything is connected you move those clusered connections and criticize them. right. then you share see what people think then criticiize them and see if you can find unexpected ocnnections right.. .then adjust the conclusion depending on the findings and then share your conclusion with humans and non humans again right but this time with a conclusion... receive feedback and then adjust.... if the note survives right move it and all the nearburing things that connect to it at that moment... maybe you want to make sure 1 last time that you did your best and everything connected to it is at it's best . then move it to your slipbox... including the connection. and see if it can connect to things in the slipbox, connecting again at the last level is easy because you spent some meaningful time with those clusters right so yeah. again if you read something that doesn't make sense or no longer useful or maybe old... you can downgrade it to step 4- which is connecting all over again right.. .and try to merge it with the new ideas... this is the system I have in mind and building and using atm. also this is just to make 1 vault called slipbox. then from reading this vault I copy past the idea and try to connect them to make things and solve problems right

    I forced myself to stay away from 'systems' and 'frameworks' and forced myself to write a "mission" note that stated my objective. Within this note, I set out why I needed to make notes and also devised a structure and method that worked specifically for my mission. Sometimes, in our eagerness to follow a system, we lose sight of the problem that the system is trying to fix, and lose our ability to appreciate that the system's problem might not be our problem.

In practice, the only substantial thing I ever accomplished was organizing pictures. 😅

    I've come back to this video again after it came to mind months later. It's super valuable. One note that came from it is "Sometimes what appears to be frictionless is adding friction another way". What an important concept in our super low-friction digital world. Connects to ideas I got from Cal Newport's book A World Without Email. Thriving in modern knowledge work I think almost *requires* understanding this. Just thought I'd share this little snippet from my own slip-box. But anyway, thank you and great job.

      Idea development is the long term result, zk is the system to connect and store ideas for the developments. In the process of collecting and connecting loose ideas, we actually have no idea what will come up as the results. New idea development begins when existing interconnected ideas become self meaningful.

    I've seen the topic discussed before, but not in the context of linear vs. fluid emerging thought, and being able to identify both using Obsidian. Tell me if I'm understanding your thesis correctly ... Emerging thought can develop linearly and/or fluidly. Unless we can devise a way to track individual "lines" of emerging thought, a purely link-based perspective of our archive of notes will have a tendency to only convey (using tools like Obsidian's local graph view) how each note relates to a central / hub meta-topic (MOC note, etc.). Searching for a note will, likewise, not convey if a note in the search results is part of a sequential line of thought. Luhmann's method of note identification is a proven way to convey this. An index note organized by this sequencing scheme will serve as an alternative way of finding entry points for notes into your archive.

    This has been really helpful, It speaks to some issues I'm starting to see with my notes and it really makes sense as a starting point to rethink my own zettelkasten method. Thank you for making the video.

    So, what have you written using your own system that is verifiable? In the end, that's what matters, what do you know? what have you produced? The reason we follow Luhmann's zettelkasten method is because it was productive for him, not because it sounded like a good idea

    Interesting. Im not sure if everything should be sequenced. A comparison between ideas that are better sequenced and ideas that are worse sequenced would be interesting. Im all about finding information faster. This makes the zettel numbering system make more sense. Thanks for sharing, hope you make more on this topic.

    Are digital pocket notebooks? Is writing on paper as beneficial as writing on a digital notebook?

    The problem with such a setup is it's not sustainable. While the notes in Obsidian in just file based, and will stay, the Zotero collections often changes or we migrate and things will be lost. I suggest using Literature note for each research paper with pdf attached to the note itself

    I wonder what system would be used if he were to create it today? Did he use index cards for their particular purpose or did he use them because that's what he had at a time?

    I feel like we are kindred spirits. First, I am diagnosed ADHD and I'm a fan of Lamy fountain pens. Isn't this method a little OCD?

      I love to hear that! It can be as OCD as you want it to be, but the way the filing system works is that it adapts to the chaotic way you think and make connections. So if you get too carried away with the OCD, it can case a lot of friction and make the experience more time consuming than it needs to be.
