12 ways to create LEARNER AUTONOMY
Apply for the Effective Gamification Framework: bit.ly/48Mpf07
Instructional designers know that providing learners with autonomy and meaningful choice can make training more engaging and effective. Learners expect to have a lot more say in the learning experience. But most training still uses a one-size-fits-all approach, which makes it challenging to attract and retain the learner.
But meaningfully integrating autonomy and learner choice in your e-learning doesn’t have to be difficult or costly, AND it can transform the learner experience. In this video, I’ll share 12 practical gamification strategies that transform traditional one-size-fits-all training into dynamic, personalized exper...

    This cleared so many doubts about autonomy that I have had for a long time. One question about in-game economy: have you ever created/considered/seen any organization where they may have created a "gamification system" where completing trainings or having a score in trainings gave them a currency that they can exchange for real life benefits like restaurant tickets, gifts, discounts, maybe even small salary increases, etc.? Not saying whether that would be a good or bad idea, I am just curious if this has been tried before and maybe you have seen it :)

    Super interesting and useful video as always! I really like the "giving hints so they can play detective" part, as I have in several occasions made learners "guess" for active learning purposes but without giving proper hints. I also really liked the "not waiting for inspiration but rather guess the game based on the learning goal" part ✨

    • @MarieJoLeroux
      @MarieJoLeroux 2 месяца назад

      Inspiration is always challengeable/debatable - if not by others, then definitely within oneself, leading to second guessing and doubt. Confidence based on a clear understanding of the ultimate goal and measure of success - that saves time and bellyaching.

    It's all great but games don't always teach you anything and sometimes they just make you 'grind' endlessly for little gain. Some people, weirdly, love that part the most and I guess that may reflect the reality of out lives sometimes. The same with Teach-Test attitude: we have questionnaires that users fill after each pilot and I cannot believe how often they choose that form of assessment over anything else, probably about 50% of people THINK that is better for them. Convincing SMEs that having engaging content is better than just pushing text+test over and over is also a challenge. I wish I could gamify that for myself.

    • @RBTTraining
      @RBTTraining Месяц назад

      I'm confused by this comment. The methods she suggests in her videos are definitely designed to teach and not "grind endlessly". If you watch her videos, I think that will be very clear.

    Thoughtful video! I do think that locking on games as a means to learning could be bounding esp. when other (equally) important methods such as reflective or social learning exists. Games also draw the learner "away" from the actual job (except simulators) & somehow they've to link this game abstraction to their everyday work all by themselves. Nevertheless, I like your work!

    • @MarieJoLeroux
      @MarieJoLeroux 2 месяца назад

      I agree with you that too much abstraction away from the real-world goal can be a distraction, and unfortunately many gamification techniques take up the learner's time and attention away from the real-world goal. This is why it's my mission to help people use gamification to make training that's actually effective, not just fun.

      Anyway, to follow through, sometimes I put them in a JavaScript object with a parameter to categorize them either as "easy" or "hard" so that once I randomly pick my questions I select the easy ones first and once the learner acheives a threshold, they level up to hard and if they get wrong answers, I can shift down until the learner is confident to get back to the next level. (Mind you separating them as question banks can do the trick too. Just what kind of outcome are we trying to get here.) Great presentation! Always looking forward to the next video.

    We're experimenting at the moment with 'asides', where the main text (because we're still mostly text!) describes the concepts and then the asides (in side bars) have illustrative stories which help to found the theory. The reader can then flip between as required. What we're not sure about is whether this is the best way around, or maybe we should have illustrative stories that explain in the main text, and then asides that define theory....

    I don't like how you always call extra information "content dump". It makes training sound like some yet another superficial HR fad. Sometimes content is paramount and it must be learnt at a 100%. Not everyone works at sales. There are exams and other real life requirements (KPI isn't one).
