Stalling the Sonex
Join me on an adventurous flight from Lilydale to Bairnsdale via Orbost in the Sonex. Watch as I attempt my first stalls, gaining confidence in my flying skills and the aircraft. While the stalls were successful, the landing at Bairnsdale posed some challenges. I wasn't going to share this initially but it should be a good reminder to do better next time. Subscribe for more aviation adventures, flying tips, and stunning aerial views. Fly with me as we explore the world from above!

Sonex rescue mission
Просмотров 3,8 тыс.Год назад
Due to some heavier than forecast rain the Sonex ended up stuck in Bendigo. After the cloud around Melbourne finally lifted I set off to mount a rescue mission to get the Sonex back to Lilydale before more inclement weather set in for the rest of the week. It was a smooth flight except for some confusion around procedures when joining the circuit at Lilydale.
Escaping the city via Sonex

In this video, I take my Sonex from Lilydale to Deniliquin for a quick flight. I make a detour along the way to do a bit of flying over Lake Eppalock. The arrival into Deniliquin was one of my best yet, but my radio work could have been better. There are still a few engine niggles that I need to work out before the Sonex is the best it can be. I believe that the mixture is running rich so this ...
Slipping into Kyneton
Просмотров 324Год назад
I was flying my Sonex into Kyneton Airfield for their Cancer Council Biggest Morning Tea when I realized I was too high. I knew I needed to lose altitude quickly, so I sidesliped the aircraft. Sideslipping is a technique where you bank the aircraft slightly and apply rudder opposite to the direction of the bank. This causes the aircraft to lose altitude without gaining airspeed. I sidesliped th...
How did you go left to go right? I was expecting a 270 roll to the left. Nice plane though.
nice video but I have to say your mag switches are an engine failure waiting to happen. If you hit those guards down won't that kill your mags? Thats the way they usually work.
Yes they are definitely not a good design. They are on the list of upgrades but I should probably bump them up to the top of the priority list.
Pretty childish but I cant help myself, there is a place on the map called Dahwilly🤪🤪
I have recently bought a Sonex/2200 Camit/tricycle ... was VH-BST now 19-2188. I also found as you did that doing more than 90kts a vibration sets in. I couldn't identify if it was engine vibration or aerodynamics. Do you have any more info on your findings. Thanks ... Peter
Good job
Great to see some fellow Australians in the air.
Engine? Is it a Jabiru 3300? Thanks
It's a Gen 1 Jabiru 2200
Thanks great video, Have you been doing much flying over Summer?
Thanks! Yeah I've been flying pretty consistently but life and lacking an audio cable is getting in the way of making videos. I aim to start making some more soon 🤞
You clearly had places to go and I'm glad you followed your rainbow
Very nice Sonex. Are you the builder?
No I'm not the builder, but I agree, the guy who built it did a great job
WONDERFUL VIDEO
Ooooookay
Great video bud!! Can’t wait for the winter to be done to get my Sonex out of the hangar!
What’s your setup ?
Which setup are you referring to? If you check out my later videos I've got a bit better video quality. Definitely still a work in progress.
@@efficientflying8209plane setup, also curious about your instruments.
It's a tailwheel Sonex with Jabiru 2200 80hp engine. As for the instruments, that's an iPad mini 5 on the left, an ASI and a slip indicator next, the EFIS is a Horizon XL which is pretty old but it still does the job. On the right there is a Trig TY91 radio and a TT21 ADSB out transponder. It could be worth doing a video with a walk around of my particular sonex.
Hi what app are you using for navigation
It's called Ozrunways, it's an Australian centric EFB app. Foreflight and Garmin pilot don't work as nicely for VFR flying as the locally made products.
Algorithm appeased!
like for the landing
Thanks for taking the time to edit and post these videos. Gives me something to look forward to as I build my Sonex!
Here is a later one. By relaxing and feeling how coordinated you are by what your body does, you end up with a nice straight ahead stall. ruclips.net/video/AvmadNYsuPg/видео.htmlsi=1GeIzxVceu0I-sxJ
Well done. "That's not going on RUclips" - classic. Our Waiex is pretty forgiving in stalls and will definitely drop a wing if uncoordinated. Problem with the sloped instrument panel is I think it can mess with that ball - we found that if you stall with the ball absolutely in the center it takes a lot of right pedal, and it will drop off to the right. Try doing stalls by feel or adjusting where the rudder/ball is until it stalls straight. And - I've had worse landings in our Waiex, as well as better ones. Lots of pattern work, stalls etc on my son's channel, here is one video of stalls: ruclips.net/video/8dc6eIq7N1s/видео.htmlsi=tRwrxm-QbKO6iZ90
I've been flying for a very long time, and on occasion, still have a stinker landing. That's just going to happen from time to time. Like your videos!
Good video keep it up.😊
I've had much worse landings than that! Good on you for putting it in the video!
Thanks! There is always room to improve. I think it will be worth mastering flapless landings for when it's gusty.
@@efficientflying8209 What works for me in the Waiex is to do a full stall landing, tailwheel first and with partial or full flaps when it is gusty. That way when the mains are down it is done flying and your speeds are slow. I think the Waiex has less rudder authority than a straight tail Sonex and using the tailwheel as part of your takeoff and landing strategy is a helpful thing.
What the hell are you talking about!
IS SONEX GOING BROKE? YOU SHOULD HAVE THE HIGH WING AVAILABLE BY NOW! WTF IS GOING ON! I WANT A HIGH WING WITH THE JABARA 3300 ENGINE! TO SPEND 100K IS NOTHING. GO BROKE AND DIE OR LET ME BUY MY AIROLPANE
Love the Sonex man! Also your videos are very entertaining, you definitely just earned a subscriber!
@aviator_z9188 thanks for the feedback! I have just picked up a second camera so I'll try to get some more videos up soon.
Ever figure out why you're getting vibration at full power climb? Could it be getting to lean ? Aeroinjector carb?
It's a Bing carb, and we're still troubleshooting but from my most recent testing, in cruise cyl 1-3 have EGTs around 550c and cyl 4 is about 500c. With a full power climb 1-3 stay pretty consistent and cyl 4 bogs down to the low 400s. Step one is a smaller main jet, then the trial and error will begin. Thanks for watching :)
@@efficientflying8209It's been a few months. Did you sort out the engine issue?
Yes and no. It's definitely a result of airflow through the carb. New jets brought cruise EGTs up to about 600c which is still low but the plus and exhaust look good so I haven't changed it again recently. We have tweaked the position of the carb and have it where I can go WOT long enough to get off the ground and climbing, then I need to back off a little bit for a sustained climb. The cobra head with a vertical vane as offered by the Jabiru factory may help but I haven't pursued that yet.
Beautiful 😍
