My Celiac Diagnosis Story
In this video and in honor of Celiac Awareness Month, I share the background of my diagnosis and how I found out I had celiac disease. After my doctor called and said "You have celiac disease" I was pretty much left to my own abilities to figure out how to eat, dine out, cook, and travel. It's why I'm so passionate about helping others do the same - to avoid the mistakes that I made in the beginning by not having the right follow up care.

    I just got diagnosed at 54. I am so mad this explains my symtoms. your right about the emotions I am so mad and I wish I knew this sooner then I could have possibly done something about it too.

    Basically, the very first thing anyone should do once diagnosed is get an appointment with a RD (registered dietician) and set up a diet plan based on gluten free whole foods. My symptoms disappeared immediately, and I was on my way to complete recovery. It probably took about 6 months to regain the lost weight and have been fine since. That was almost 20 years ago.

    Hi. Thank you for your video. Can I ask please. When you first got found with Celiac , how long did it take for your villi to get back to work? Thank you.

    • @wrenfan
      @wrenfan Месяц назад

      I read that villi can regenerate almost immediately after starting the diet. It did in my case because my classic symptoms stopped right away. I was 100% compliant with what I ate and drank. I am sure results can vary.

    I don’t expect any restaurant to guarantee lack of cross-contamination.

    • @howmanygecswasthat

      I mean unless it's a dedicated gluten free restaurant, then that's up to their food distributors and not really the restaurant itself.

    I am happy and feel finally relieved that after 20 years of feeling crazy because I did not “feel right” and was hospitalized twice for crazy blood sugar (clocked 40), not diabetic, not thyroid. A team could not figure it out. 2 years ago I started getting a redness on my face that turned into blisters that just kept getting worse. Doc I have now is an AMAZING person:) She figured it out in 10 minutes today:) I had such beautiful skin, she saw my face and immediately figured things out. 20 years of thinking I was a hypochondriac…

    Probably took awhile for you to find gluten free options, as that was right at the cusp of them becoming more available. Mine showed up later in life, though it was probably there for awhile and just needed to build up to the end stage where I started losing weight. When I look back, there were signs, like canker sores, fatigue and moodiness, certain intestinal issues. The most notable was not being able to recall certain words, facts, or figures, and trying to think of different words to use in their place. The gluten free options have really improved, but I still miss gyros. Unfortunately the third ingredient in gyros meat is wheat.

    Good tips, thanks! On a recent trip to Europe, I found Croatia, Netherlands, England and Ireland very good to travel in with lots of gluten-free choices in restaurants and stores. For Italy, I don’t speak Italian so I went with a small tour group and our excellent guide communicated with all restaurants ahead of time to make sure gluten-free options were available. Although I speak French, I found smaller towns in France endlessly frustrating. Many restaurants had no gluten free options and wouldn’t accommodate even simple changes to their menu. Night after night in many places I ended up eating canned mackerel in a mustard sauce, gluten free crackers and fresh nectarines back at my hotel. I had to stock up on gluten free foods wherever I could find them because, again in smaller towns there simply were no good options no willingness on the part of restaurant staff to help. In larger towns, once I found a restaurant with good gluten-free choices I tended to go back to it rather than spend hours searching for an alternative. Often hotel staff were good at pointing me towards nearby restaurants with gluten-free choices.

      Thank you Jerry for your reply! I have had similar positive experiences in the countries you mentioned. But I have also heard similar frustrations with smaller towns in France. Nothing against France at all, and their cuisine is exquisite. But I think the gluten-free request may have a negative connotation or "demanding tourist" vibe to them, which of course, is not what we mean. We'd just like to eat something! I'm sorry you had challenges there, but glad you were able to stock up on products when you could. Thanks for sharing your experience!

    Congratulations, Jen, on your RUclips channel!! I miss NYC and all the great food!! I miss bagels and soft pretzels most of all so I took your suggestion and ordered some from Modern Bread & Bagel which haven’t arrived yet but I can’t wait until they do. I’ve tried other GF bagels and I guess I’m spoiled because they weren’t like I remember.
