The Igbos originate from the nation of Israel, from the tribe of Gad, who along with the tribe of Reuben and the half tribe of Manasseh, settled before the Jordan river. By necessity, these 3 tribes would be the first to have been dispersed during the Assyrian conquest of the Kingdom of Israel. This would imply that the Igbos may have been separated from Israel since as far back as 732 BCE, over 100 years before the destruction of the first temple. Traditional Igbo customs mirror practices from Abraham and Moses. A lot of that was contaminated during the colonial incursion into Igbo lands in Nigeria and introduction of Christianity in those parts, but certain practices still remain. Will the Igbos ever be recognised as members of the nation of Israel? I don't think so, because it is not a politically expedient outcome nor a practical matter because granting Igbos a right of return would more than double the population of the state of Israel. I am persuaded that only Moshiach will resolve this, as well as bring back all the other lost tribes. Until then, it is nice to know that some of our brothers and sisters from whom we have long been parted recognise that we are of the same stock. Shalom.
