Achtung Junkers: The Genius Who Made Iron Fly
#junkers
#junkersju87
#aviationhistory
When you hear the name Junkers, what comes to mind? For most, it’s probably the screaming dive of the Ju 87 Stuka or the rugged Ju 52 hauling paratroopers and supplies across Europe. Junkers aircraft were everywhere during WWII, leaving behind a legacy tied to war and destruction. But the man behind the name, Hugo Junkers, had an entirely different vision for aviation.
Hugo Junkers believed in progress, innovation, and the power of aviation to bring people together. He was an engineer, an inventor, and a pioneer who designed the first practical all-metal airplanes and laid the foundation for modern aircraft design. His Junkers J 1 was a groundbreaking ac...

In this video we explore the biggest. Consider sup...

Yet, carrier pilots did not like "blind" take offs, thus the F-5 took over the carrier role and the F-4 much more "island hopped" airstrip to airstrip as the Navy took terrain. Filling the close-air-support role. This, along with the much more superior P-38 and F5. Knowing a naval WW2 Pacific carrier pilot, I have it on good faith that Navy pilots absolutely refused to fly the Corsair off/on an aircraft carrier. For what it's worth.

G'day ADD, Interesting video. I particularly liked the brief shots of warships sailing backwards. As to the FU Corsairs they are my favourite WW2 fighter even though they didn't achieve as much as other types. Like many airframes in the conflict they were rushed into service; clearly with a need for more aerodynamic and design work to smooth out its unique idiosyncrasies. Pilots, also were not generally given sufficient time to come to grips with the Corsair's advantages and dangers, especially in carrier operation. This is an aircraft that also suffered from spreading manufacturers too widely. It's now obvious that certain factories built Corsairs either with insufficient understanding or too quickly to meet demands. An interesting part of the Corsair story, you didn't cover, is their use by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. I'm ex-RAAF and I'm deeply interested in RAAF history. I believe that our service got their hands on a Corsair for evaluation and after close physical and flying examination, decided against adding them to their inventory. I'm not so sure about the details of the RAN and why they didn't use the Corsairs either. In any case it was a great pity that so many groundbreaking aircraft were simply dumped at sea, or scrapped as they were in the US. Air forces would have benefitted by more research into 'gull wing' designs and the 'accidental' clipped wing feature. Thanks for your video.. Cheers, Bill H.

My Granfather Georgios Pagkalos depicted on 2:18 2nd from left was one of the first graduates of the Hellenic Airforce Academy. He fought in the referenced in the video battles and survived. He later went to the Middle East and became a colonel for the 335 squadron which was based in Palestine and then Egypt . The 335th squadron consisted of Greek exiled pilots and belonged to the Royal British Airforce. He fought many battles including military operations in Egypt and the Nazi occupied island of Crete. He fell 4 times and survived each and everytime. He came back to Greece after the war to his wife and son and had another son. He died in 2007 aged 94 years old. He was a war hero, a true patriot, a truly brave and fierce warrior and a really incredible and talented pilot. P.S. After retiring from the Greek army he received an offer to fly for the Greek Commercial Airline Olympic Air which belonged to Onassis for a pretty hefty salary. He rejected the offer immediately, saying “ I am a fighter pilot and I would rather die than drive these air buses. Only wussies endure driving these boring air buses.😂” Ζήτω η Ελλάς 🇬🇷

"Aviation Deep Dive", what a brilliant prod'n! I had always thought Junkers was just another Prussian industrial alpha-dog testing the av'n industry (because of the "Junkers" name assoc'n). The robust Duraluminum skin and (mostly) enclosed cabins made them effective bushplanes on floats or skis. (But I'm thinking a 'skosh more power would have been welcome; like all its competitors). There is a slight continuity error at the beginning of the video. Finland was not allied with Germany during the Winter War, but fought on it's own (hence the war lasted only 3 months). The alliance with Germany followed the war and Germany's occupation of Denmark and Norway, which effectively prevented help from the western countries.

A greek pilot Mitraleksis, after spending all his ammunition, approached from behind an italian Kant bomber and chewed its rudder with his propeller! The bomber made a forced landing and Mitraleksis landed his now damaged fighter near it and took its crew prisoner. Many greek pilots escaped to Egypt, where they formed the 335 fighter squadron equipped with Hurricanes and fought with distinction. Our tiny Greece forced the Germans to delay operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the USSR, which seriously derailed their plans for a quick victory against the soviets.
