    Hello Yai, So, here I am in Phra Tam Nak, Pattaya and there you are in, er, maybe Neo knows..? I have a question, that I'll come to in a moment. Thanks to the excellent advice you offer in your series, I'm exploring several popular destinations in the country: Bangkok, Pattaya, Krabi, Hua Hin and Chiang Mai. I'm using my 60-day tourist visa (UK national, no application needed), which I hope to extend for another 30 days when I get to Krabi. I know that Pattaya has a certain reputation but my reason for being here for a month has been to experience what daily life might be like in a comparatively subdued and affordable area. The sun and sand being an obvious draw too. So far, so good but, until coming here, I had never encountered so many Russians. I've watched several times both Week 2 on Visas and Week 4 on Money. And, of course, this episode's round-up of 'important things'. However, I'm still uncertain about one thing. I've read on the misleadingly named 'Thai Embassy' (Siam Legal) web site that "Foreigners in possession of a Tourist Visa are not eligible to open a bank account in Thailand". I'm wondering if this statement is erroneous - perhaps designed to trick people into paying for the services of a visa processing company..? I ask because, from your videos, it appears that you can't get a non-immigrant type visa without having certain sums of money showing in a Thai bank account. With that in mind, I presume that tourist visa holders can open Thai bank accounts after all, in order to complete their applications. Or is there another way? Can you clarify if there are any additional preconditions for tourist visa holders not covered in Week 2, 4 or 12? Also, would it be possible to open a bank account whilst staying at a hotel or serviced apartment address for a few weeks? Or is a much longer residential period required? Obviously, the main aim here is to move onto the next stage of acquiring a 3 month non-O visa, then a 12-month extension, in the manner described in Week 2. It might make more sense to do all of this when I come back again but, at the very least, knowing I can make progress in these areas with only a tourist visa would be very reassuring. Thanks again for producing this amazingly informative and entertaining channel.

      I've done some asking around to get the latest and greatest info. Although it HAS gotten harder for un-visa'd expats to open bank accounts, it's not a legal thing, just a bank policy thing. Before, basically any branch would do it, but now it seems banks are trying to limit which of their branches hold foreign accounts. It has something to do with international and government reporting requirements regarding money laundering. That said, it is still possible, you just have to figure out which branches to try. Since you're in Pratamnak, I recommend you try the Bangkok Bank Branch on Second Road in Jomtien and the Bank of Ayuddya (Commonly called Yellow Bank by local expats) on Theppraya Road in Jomtien near the police station, and finally Siam Commercial Bank on Beach Road in Jomtien. You've pinpointed what might be your key obstacle, the address issue. If you are not renting some place long-term, your best bet is to find a friend willing to let you use their address by creating a rental agreement with you. If you're in a service apartment, their agreement might be good enough. In the current environment and time of year, it's going to take some effort to find the right branch and the right staff to help you through the process. If I were doing it now, I'd start with Yellow Bank, then SCB and then Bangkok bank, just because my experience is that the Bangkok Bank Second Road Branch is quite overwhelmed during high season and it will be difficult to find someone willing to help you through the process. Finally, there are some agents who can legally help you through the process (DONT USE THE ILLEGAL ONES - IF IT SEEMS TOO EASY, THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG!!!). Try the agent next to the immigration office entry on Soi 5 Jomtien. I have no experience with them but they have a good reputation. Best of luck and let us all know how it went so others can benefit from your experience. Thanks again for watching.

      @@LetsLiveinThailand Thank you for the swift reply with your "latest and greatest info", and helpful recommendations - I'm honoured. Your insight on the extra effort involved to open a Thai bank account during this busy time of year has me thinking that it is perhaps best to wait until I have a suitable address to declare when making the application. That said, taking a stroll to the agent you mention sounds like a good idea, just to see what can be done at this time, if anything. Regarding the banks you suggest, Bangkok Bank seems to be properly geared-up for large foreign transfers from accounts such as Wise, which could be an advantage, in a hurry (Wise fees notwithstanding)., especially given the regulatory headaches that seem to assume that world + dog is money laundering these days. I had been considering the Bank of Ayuddya (Krungsri) as, given the charges you mention in Week 4 (Money), I've read that this bank's ATMs have a 30k THB withdrawal limit, compared to Bangkok Bank's 25K THB, with ATMs at other banks seemingly pegged at 20k THB. But then again, regularly accessing ATMs may be less of an issue when having a Thai bank account, as it will allow you to use apps like PromptPay that have very small fees and none at all for transactions below 5,000 THB. Choices, choices... Thanks again for your inputs here, and the videos, of course. I find there's always something new to discover by watching them a few times.

      @ Thank you for your kind words. Let’s hope more people find these videos, the whole youtube “algorithm” bewilders me. I see poorly shot reviews of Thai girlie bars by drunk farang that get 100k views in a week, which means RUclips gives them many more impressions than they do these kinds of videos. No matter, I did this to get good info out there since I see so much wrong info and outright scams. I don’t have any interest in monetizing, so number of views is less important. Cheers

      @@LetsLiveinThailand So, how did it go? Well, following your earlier suggestion, I went to the visa place adjacent to immigration, yesterday. It's a neat and tidy office with some local staff and an English-speaking guy there who called himself what sounded like, 'C'. I chatted with him and it soon became evident that organising a bank account separately wouldn't be too cost-effective, and a visa package deal would make more sense. However, he said it would take a month to process everything, which is probably due to it being high season right now. It wasn't the most expensive I've heard about, but no outright bargain either. No doubt the cheaper deals are the domain of the illegal operators that you warn against. At least there's a place you can visit here and a clear pricing structure for both first-timers and those seeking visa renewals. Incidentally, RUclips's algorithms didn't lead me here. I discovered your channel whilst sitting in the UK, browsing the Pattaya Mail site for the first time and reading the article about it. Maybe you can raise the channel's profile by shopping for a mankini and having some friends model a few? And later, going to some bars with Neo and discussing points of etiquette whilst getting steadily inebriated. I'm sure Neo has a good idea of places to visit that will get lots of likes.

    • @LetsLiveinThailand
      @LetsLiveinThailand 21 день назад

      On the Thai side, there are no limits. You’ll need to check with your US Bank to see if THEY have any restrictions or special reporting requirements. I know folks who have wired USD 1MM with no problem. Just remember, there needs to be a note in the wire describing the reason for the transfer.

    • @LetsLiveinThailand

      Having had to get visas to over thirty different countries in my career, and after helping my husband get his original visa to the USA 25 years ago, I can confidently say that the visa process is a pain in the ear for every country. I might add that it’s likely to get worse instead of better. As Developed countries make tighter (and more expensive) visa rules, developing countries will want to retaliate or push back. Most developing countries are adopting reciprocal fees - so, if the USA charges its citizens $150 for a tourist visa, then US citizens get charged the same. Of course, countries that rely on tourism for a significant portion of their GDP are incentivized to keep fees lower - but they do that by waiving short term visas and making longer term visas more difficult. My own experience is that Thailand is unexceptional regarding visa requirements.

      @@LetsLiveinThailand I first went to Thailand 38 years ago, it was something then, I moved to Pattaya in the 90s it didn't even have paved streets, just one, the rest were dirt roads all the way to Jomtien..I speak fairly good Thai and in fact my older Brother still lives there. You've obviously caught the Thai bug, nothing can be wrong with it. Well new tax laws, reporting to immigration 4 times a year, prices rising with many, especially on pensions, looking elsewhere now. Both Vietnam and Cambodia don't give you the immigration hassle Thailand now does. You must have conveniently missed all that somewhere along the way. I agree it's still a nice place and I visit regularly but it's not the best place anymore by a long shot and many now agree with that.

You’ll learn that Thailand is an amalgam of languages and cultures, with Isaan having a very interesting Khmer history. In Ayutthaya, Khampaeng Phet, and Srisatchinalai, I would be standing in front of the ruins of Hindu temples later converted to Buddhist. In Chiang Mai, Burmese and Lanna temples. One of the beauties of Thailand and its culture is its rich blending of cultures at the crossroads of Southeast Asia. To understand Thai culture, recognizing that blending is very helpful. I misunderstood your earlier comment. To me, a “Thailand resident” is not an “expat”. You are correct- the situation for Thai citizens and legal residents is different from most expats. The exception is as your friend explained to you (and I mentioned in the video), of expats working in Thailand on a work permit (and hence paying into the social welfare scheme). Not sure what was misleading in the video regarding retired expats as discussed in the paying for healthcare section, but thank you for taking the time to clarify.

    I saw a live stream recently in which a Thailand resident said that he travels to Australia once per year and brings back one years worth of meds for himself to Thailand . He said that for example on just 1 blood pressure medication he has to pay 70 dollars per month in Thailand? Do they not have health insurance that offers drug plans to avoid these high medication costs in Thailand?

      I haven’t seen that live stream, but the information may be particular to his unique case, drug, and diagnosis. Almost all drugs are available for free via public health here. Thank you for watching and don’t forget to subscribe!

      @@LetsLiveinThailand He used one of his common BP meds as an example. It makes absolutely NO sense that he would fly to Australia to pick up one years worth of meds if he could obtain them free in Thailand! The live stream was Coopers Thai adventure and he was the guest named Tony Montana.

    The time you were talking about is Modern Thai, don't think you can call it "traditional", before they used that time they used the chinese time using the bali word yam ยาม so two in the morning would be 2 ยาม. I'd consider that "Traditional". This is still taught in schools though mostly in history class. Also used a lot is 24 hour time so 13 naligar would be 1pm. Good video nontheless, subscribed.

      It’s not a Thailand thing. All countries have difficult and confusing visa processes. Thailand is exceptional in that it has visa-free entry for tourists, unlike many countries. I have three days in Ho Chi Minh coming up which I thought I’d enjoy seeing on a flight connection. It took me two days to get my expensive e-visa paid for on line (Vietnamese banks don’t like foreign credit cards) and another week to get the visa via email. That’s for a three day visit. Thai paperwork for long-term visas isn’t easy if you don’t follow the procedure, that’s true. If you do qualify and follow the procedures, it’s time consuming, but a lot more transparent than most developing countries. Thanks for watching, don’t forget to subscribeM

    I am getting a real Mr Rogers vibe from you. Personally I prefer a more grownup presentation but your content is spot on, as is your pronunciation. Your understanding of Thailand is remarkable and your patience in trying to teach other expats is exceptional. After living here for more than 47 years myself I have adopted the position of letting others discover Thailand on their own. I don't do mentoring or hand holding. I really hope you reach more people over time.
