Vintage Ludwig 1976 Demo!

This is a Vintage Ludwig from 1976. Beginning in 1976, the Classic series was made with new molds and a new construction; small (6" and 8") toms were 4-ply and larger drums were 6-ply maple & poplar, with no reinforcement rings. These shells were not only stronger but less expensive to make. The interior was a clear-coated natural finish. If you have any questions I would love to answer them. I...

The Uad Apollo definitely lacked nuance in the mid range and top end. Focusrite ISA had less bottom than the 710, but the clarity in the top end and mid transients is beautiful. More Balanced. ISA was my favourite. Id go fo maybe the 710 for kicks, but the rest ISA One. I love thicker, deeper kick drums as a Hip Hop head.

First of all, nice playing! I found certain things that I liked a lot about each of the preamps, (and nothing that I didn’t like); for example, I love the saturation of the UA Tube, particularly on the kick drum, but, I also loved the Focusrite ISA for the way it’s able to capture finer sonic details and nuances, and in that way, I’d consider it to be great for the “esoterica” of an instrument/voice performance. Truth be told, you couldn’t go wrong with any of these preamps; you’d get fantastic, pro-caliber recording quality with ANY of them. I wouldn’t consider one to be any “better” than the others, they’re all just a bit different…but the sonic quality of all of them is great. For me, it would probably come down to their features… As an owner of Focusrite ISA’s, I love how versatile they are, and in the features they have…things like inserts for processing while tracking (which can be set for either pre or post), selectable impedances (great for ribbon mics), and, with its whopping 80db of available gain, it offers outstanding headroom for ribbons and low output dynamic mics. But again, I’d be MORE than happy to use ANY of these high quality preamps for recording. IMO. 🙏

Pearl makes good products...i especially like their fit and finish...its flawless. no spot is overlooked...i have a yamaha maple custom kit which i adore...and a second snare is a pearl 5x14 free floating...im not crazy about its sound compared to my yamaha...but the plating on the pearl is fine and flawless...even though the maple customs were yamahas flagship when i bought em in late 90s...and they look and sound everybit of the $$$$ i paid for em new! im thinking of getting an aluminum ludwig lm 400 or 402...acrolite even...but i love the sound of the pearl in this demo...good job...i might consider it over the $750+ for the ludwig supra or acros... thanks for the video!! The new sensitone aluminums such as this one will become available for me in september 2021 and for 1/2 the price of ludwigs so i will strongly consider it for sure!!!

Hey! If I had the Apollo 8P I probably wouldn’t have purchased any of the other pres. There is a difference between them but it’s not huge, the are very transparent which is what I was looking for when I got them. Cool thing about the Apollo is you can use the emulators and get a bunch of different sounds.

Nice demo, Isaac! What batter head are you using...the standard Ambassador coated? The only other thing that I always like to hear in a demo is the cross-stick/side-stick sound, but i realize it adds a lot more time to each demo. I picked one of these up a few years ago brand new for a steal and love it as well. Swapped out the mediocre throw-off/strainer for a better Pearl SR-150 and couldn't be happier. That '76 Ludwig floor tom and kick drum sound beefy as well. Nice work.

Great video! Thanks! I too have a 4-710d Apollo along with wa412 and wa273 preamps. My stereo OHs are km184s and I traditionally ran them through the 4-710d with about 60/40 tube/trans. Really punchy and powerful while smoothing out the high end and punching the toms and snare in the mids. Also hit everything with the slow attack about 3db on the 1176 circuit. Almost too punchy and aggressive for some stuff but really great overall. Now that I have the wa412 it’s a cleaner faster transient option that would be similar to the Apollo pres or the isa428. They’re all great! Cheers
