Korg multi/poly Analog Modeling Synth: First Look!
The latest Korg R&D synth-the Korg multi/poly-just dropped outta nowhere, and I was lucky enough to snag one in stock (thanks, Zzounds!). Let's take a look and listen to this super-interesting, super-fun, badass monster synth. In this video, I'm mostly talking about what's new and different vis-a-vis Korg wavetate and modwave. We'll surely be doing more videos about this thing in the future. And, OF COURSE, you can use KRC Mathwaves with it, 'cuz wavetables. Grab your waveshaper and get ready for some virtual-voice-cards-a-go-go virtual analog goodness! (Spoiler alert: My quick review is this synth is rad.)

We're synthesizing waveforms and wavetables with math... And we're correcting a few errors. Come along with me as we explore the supernaturally bell-like sounds of waveforms made with the polygonal number series. And... I'm confused. Did I hear you say that each layer can hold 4 oscillators, per layer!? I see 4 layers in the editor. Would that mean we can thicken this beast with 16 oscillators with a single keystroke!? Or am I dreaming. I can throw 6 at a time on the Opsix! But 16 * faints * I'm currently browsing the manual to see if I'm just dreaming. Thank you, Keith! Really appreciate your work! ...Edit: Not confused ...I said that early on in the vid. Can't wait to play with this, it's gonna be fun!!
Hey there, @audioartisan. Yes, you understand that correctly. A multi/poly performance is 4 layers (each layer a "Program"). Each Program layer voice architecture consists of 4 oscillators. So, yes, you could have 16 oscillators sounding at once. Further, the unison mode is per Program (layer), so you could have voice duplication as well (meaning, even more oscillators sounding) on a single key. I haven't stress tested to see how ridiculous you can get and still have any reasonable polyphony, but many of the fat patches I'm playing here are sounding 20 voices without voice stealing. Thanks also for the kind comments and thanks for watching! 🎹

…don’t say 80’s 😅! This post is selling like 300% more of these as he’s going through it (super demo)…and he decides to utter “80’s”😅😅😅
@digitaldiezel5870, thanks for watching and for the kind comment (I agree, it's a super demo 😉)! But what's wrong with mentioning the 1980s? It's the golden era of synth-pop, and multi/poly is chock full of emulations of classic 70s and 80s synth patches. (I didn't demo them, but there's a lovely homage to the bass from "Don't You Want Me", in addition to the "Sweet Dreams" type patches... also there's a couple of gems from I Speak Machine's Tara Busch for "Cars" and... of all things... the noise hit from "Betty Davis Eyes"). It just gives off those vibes! Also, I'm very GenX and cut my teeth on synthesis in the 80s, so don't make me get all Espen Kraft on you. 🤣 Don't forget to like and subscribe for moar talky synthesizer content!
I miss the 80's. I miss the 70's even more...
Bruh 😎… !!!
I am finally seeing those differences between Multi/Poly and Modwave. Thanks. Oversampling and Audio Rate Filter FM are ones I've missed, just comparing the 2 Owners' Manuals. You explained round robining very well too. Will wait 6 months or whatever for the module version of Multi/Poly.
@bilonggrisimmeri glad you found that helpful and thanks for watching! With respect to the "digital"/wavetable oscillator, in multi/poly, it has all of the same capabilities as the modwave wavetable oscillator, except for a couple of morph modes (I think it lacks "sync" and "windowed sync" morphs), and it doesn't have the Wavetable A/B mode (where you can blend between two different wavetables in a phase-synced way). But you gain the waveshaper oscillator, which actually has like 3 different parameters for changing the waveform created by the shaper and this is a very similar type of effect to A/B blend. All oscillators, of all types, are free-running in multi/poly, so that's different as well. As a result, that means there is no specific phase control/modulation destination (as we have in modwave). Also, the new "Drift" parameter and related amounts in multi/poly replace the "pitch random" parameter (a handy, but less sophisticated way to simulate drift in modwave or wavestate). If you're interested in stuff like this, you might like this previous video where I talked about techniques for making "analog" sounding patches in modwave at ruclips.net/video/mXayzXmD9jk/видео.htmlsi=6qyiKgrypfyDEIKt&t=348.
Will you be coming out with a performance bank for this ? I love that weirdshaper sound very blade runner 48:00
@@VitaEx thanks for the kind words! Yeah, I’m thinking about that, or simply adding them to Mathwaves. Yeah, the modulation in that patch is a bit of a “Vangelis” move. Though, in my head, I was thinking “Arrakis… Dune… Desert Planet” but failed to make the joke while I was recording. The waveshaper oscillator is exceedingly interesting and responds in very interesting ways to modulation. It’s a bit like Wavetable A/B mode on modwave in that you can move the waveform in multiple dimensions that aren’t immediately obvious.
@ I dig it vibes (spice) must flow
I feel like you could use that strum trick to very closely emulate the tones in beink of time and maloria cathedral among other iconic tracks from misudas excellent chrono trigger ost
@@VitaEx I hear what you mean there. Yeah, there’s a lot of “retriggery” stuff in video game/chiptune music. Old guy aside: I have a fondness for complex/multistage envelopes and the tricks one can do with them as my first synth was the Casio CZ-101, which has 8-stage envelopes. Aside 2: you can do strum/flam effects in Wavestate because you can have a silent step(s) in the wavesequence. But there’s no non-convoluted/inefficient way to do that in modwave (aside from either some tricky mod processor stuff or running a layer through a fully wet delay effect, which just isn’t the same thing). Thanks for being such a careful listener!
Happy to see someone mention it. I love synthwave the spectrum bands like fantom87 or vhs dreams all the way to rockin stuff like magic swords. Other than the Miami overdrive setting shown briefly in other videos I hadn’t sent tubers specifically focus on the synthwave possibilities of this, but I clearly keep hearing them in parts of latches and playing. I just got mine today so I haven’t busted it out yet but I’m most excited about even just doing layer switching you could make a performance that’s basically different parts of a song a one turn them on off bass drums melody or intro verse chorus etc for live play. Magic sword for example if I wanted to play tunes like that I would need to buy mutiple expensive synths. I feel like this little unit and a looper even will be able to really do a lot without haveing to spend 45 minutes pulling out all my other gear super stoked to starting experimenting with it. Absolutely wish it game in a nice outrun sun vector landscape purple pink qnd blue paint scheme lol but it still looks pretty sweet

Umm... OK. Thanks for watching, I guess.

maybe rebrand as "multi/wave"?
@neuronist, thanks for watching! While I didn't actually comment on this in the video, I think it's really funny that they didn't include "wave" in the name of this synth. Missed marketing opportunity to give this thing a hot pink livery and a trendy name. 😉
Oh nice you got one. Curious what the sounds are like. Especially the wave shapers , x mod and audio rate filter lfos
Hey, @HarmonicSonics, thanks for watching! I'll definitely be doing more with multi/poly in the future, but I got a bit into the waveshaper oscillator and audio-rate filter modulation together at 0:48:21. And I very briefly touched on cross-mod at 1:08:11 .
Hi, how easy is it to import your tables into a Bofeld? Cheers Rich
Blofeld only uses sysex midi for wavetables.
Hey, thanks for watching @0richbike. I don't know that it's actually possible or easy to import third-party wavetables like mine to Blofeld. Based on this article everyone seems to point to -- markmoshermusic.com/2015/07/29/intro-to-loading-custom-waldorf-blofeld-wavetables/ -- it seems super cumbersome. I don't personally own a Blofeld, but perhaps another wavetable fan will chime in here.
Thank you for this honest review! I was one step ahead buying it and I´m so happy I found your video. What is your thought on the 1.5 update?
@@nuuality I have taken a quick look at 1.5, and the new resynthesis algorithm is better in some ways. I will do a video about 1.5, but I’ve been mostly working with Korg multi/poly over this past week and just finished a video about that (will be online later tonight).
Starting at 41:00. VERY NICE, very pretty!
KORG, during this BLACK FRI and HOLIDAY SEASON writ large, is going to drop MODWAVE NATIVE to $99. Same for WAVESTATE NATIVE. I learned this in a dream last night. Being an ABYSS and NOVUM owner, thanks to you, I cannot buy MYTH. So, thank you. Also, I've tried to love my demo version of KULT. Can't buy it either. IF the WALDORF PPG goes half price this season....I'm there. YOU gotta admit: there is such a thing as THAT WALDORF SOUND and the PPG VST HAS IT! I have Rediscovered NAVE and I love it again--except for the UI being sized for a cricket or smallish Beetle. I had a question today: HAVE YOU, THE WAVETABLE KING, played around with ZEBRAlette-3? Phase Plant, VITAL....so wonderful. ZEBRAlette is FREE, btw.
Hey @watchaddicts1213, I have done a couple of videos involving Zebralette 3, from several months ago, so using the very early beta releases of that synth: ruclips.net/video/N8G6TJDcoZo/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/k-gtrUrDBWQ/видео.html. I'm sure it's evolved a lot since then and note that there wasn't any documentation at the time about features that I'm most interested in, so I'm sure it's a different experience now.
Looking forward to your take on your mPoly!
I’m hoping to get that done today!
You haven't learn nothing from one video to the other, if you want to import wavetables you select several single wave forms or if you have a serum (or whatever) wavetable file, you drag and drop the entire wavetable and it will spread over the "ruler". I sincerely hope that you have learn these things by now but I still find bizarre that someone makes assertions before knowing what you're talking about.
Thanks for watching! As I've told others (or maybe it's just you replying again), there's this thing called "linear time." You are commenting from 7 months in the future with respect to this video. I am demonstrating the very earliest beta versions of Zebralette 3, when it did not have certain features (e.g., wavetable import), and single-cycle waveform import wasn't documented at all. What you see here is me, and my comments section, figuring this stuff out in real time. 🤷♂
I guess that would be me, I am searching for why are there guide curves in the mseg so I am watching every video on the subject. I watched the other video where you struggle with importing stuff and as the title of this one is: I was wrong about Zebralette, I thought it was funny, what were you wrong about. But I am sorry and I understand, there are plenty of people in the comments saying the same.
Great!!!
Thanks for watching!
So I will be that one difficult guy after all :-) I said to hell with PayPal and bought the full set, but there are so many different packs that I have to ask: where do I find the not-really-polygonal wavetables with the nice bell-like quality? I can find the "polygon redux" sets, but can't find any other set with polygon in the name, the "lucky mistake" bunch. Also, I am further confused: are the "VOSIM Sin" sets the same as "VOSIM Sin microwaved" (and so on)? Why are some contained in the larger "download all" sets, while others need to be downloaded one by one? I guess I wish I could download one complete zip archive per format (Vital, Bitwig and PhasePlant in my case). I know those files would be huge, ut I suppose it would be easier to download them as "Vital/Serum part 1 of 10" though 10 of 10, then remembering if I've already downloaded "multi_linear_wavetables_hi_full_110" :-)

And I can't find a way of contacting you other than through here. Is there a way to use PayPal to buy the set? (Btw, this is the video that convinced me to get them!)
Hmm… I’m not obviously seeing that PayPal isn’t an option, but will check when I’m back on my real machine.
www.paypal.me/VillaElrod and you can pay me via PayPal. In your note, pick a coupon code you’d like me to generate. I’ll make a coupon that makes the price $0. That’s the only way I can think to make it work. (And yeah it does seem PayPal just disappeared as a supported payment type in Gunroad. 🤷♂️
@@kcrosley No rush at all, thank you. But yeah, it seems that Gumroad recently dropped PayPal, or PayPal dropped Gumroad, either way it's not shown as a payment option any more. And Gumroad doesn't have a "help" or a "contact us" link anywhere I can see
Yeah, it seems that PayPal dropped Gumroad and so the option isn’t available anymore. (While apparently creators got an email about this when it happened, I personally can’t find that message. 🤷♂️) it is sucky and I’ll be exploring alternatives, at least for supporting PayPal as a payment source. Meh!
Hi Keith, once I add the id attribute to the rg, any element that's inside of the rg becomes unclickabke on mobile devices, it works just fine on pc. The sets of polygonal waveforms and your original formal are so beautiful and pure, but reminds me of my dad's toy piano So good❤
@APKManagement-rg4px, thanks! And thanks for watching! I meant to make some comments on this in the video, but it was getting too long (also I'm "the absent-minded professor"), but I find it amazing that A. Souter (of Galbanum) basically "discovered" this class of waveforms and then was like, "eh, here's another waveform", without realizing the importance and beauty of this particular sound. I think of these as a "missing" basic synthesis waveform type and, as I show in the video, there's a clear connection between the polygonal waveforms and the sawtooth wave itself (mathematically) which simply makes me go 👀.
Oh, also... Yeah, a "toy piano" type patch would be a no-brainer application of these sorts of waveforms!
These wavetables sound amazing! SO MUCH interesting frequency content to work with. Just what I'm looking for! 👍

VITAL IS PRETTY WONDERFUL.
You can’t really beat it for value for money (though I like modwave better as my wavetable-synth-of-choice). I mean free/donatiomware + $29-or-less for Mathwaves, it’s a heck of a combination. 🤷♂️😃

Hey Keith. Is there any synth you LOVE? Software synth or Hardware synth (NO EURORACK allowed) ? A/nd do you like OMNISPHERE? To me, SERUM sounds HORRIBLE and SHRILL. I own it and AVOID using it WHENEVER POSSIBLE. Sidebar: It is ridiculous that LOOM II did not include a SCALABLE UI. Thanks. MOST BEAUTIFUL UI?? Oh, glad you asked. THAT"S EASY: XILS LABS, POLYKB III.
@@watchaddicts1213 I do love Omnisphere, though I haven’t used it in a while. I wish it were a bit easier to get one’s own samples into it (maybe it’s easier in the latest versions) as the granular engine is fun there, and I think the effects are really fun and great as is the arpeggiator (I also have the various expansions for it like Trillian). I own Serum mostly because of the Wavetable editor and well, it’s probably the most popular Wavetable synth. As I mentioned previously, I love Korg modwave and wavestate. I’ve owned quite a bit of Dave Smith/Sequential gear but the ones I still have are the PRO-2 (mono synth) and Prophet 12 (digital oscillator/analog filters polysynth). I will never get rid of my Nord Modular (guess I should get into VCV Rack) nor my Emulator E4K (and I wish Emulator X were still around/modernized). I also have a near complete collection of E-mu ROMs that I keep around for use in a PX-7 Command Station (though those sounds are all available as multisamples from Digital Sound Factory and I have all of those and converted most of them to Korg multi sample format). Oddballs: Waldorf Pulse 2 (awesome arpeggiator), Alesis Micron (wild early VA architecture, old-skool 16-voice multitimbral). Drum machine: Elektron Analog RYTM (I have a MK1). Thinking about Omnisphere again, it should get an update that would allow modern wavetable import. How awesome would that be? There must be some soft synths besides the Korgs that I love, but drawing a bit of a blank. Have spent a lot of time in Reaktor I guess. Not a “synth” per se, but I do like Maschine a lot (you could say love since I seem to own nearly every incarnation of the hardware).
Peter took hours with me in email back and forth-me being a synthesis idiot, unlike you operating at master level. If you email Peter, he WILL do a zoom thing with you. It could be very edifying for the both of you. Ok, I’ll go back to my cage now Mark
I am unsure. Are you sorry you bought MYTH?
While the resynthesis engine is definitely unsatisfying, I thought it was interesting for the modal resonator, which I went into in detail in this follow-up video: ruclips.net/video/Jm69svhy43M/видео.html And I really am hoping that someday a sample playback module might show up in Myth. A guy can dream. (For my take on a wild resynthesis engine, see my video on Sumu: ruclips.net/video/U4zVIqyCQKM/видео.html Thanks for watching!
@@kcrosley Thank you so much for sharing AND for the LINKS provided. Sidebar: because of you, I am demoing and LOVING ModWave; I had completely ignored it in favor of Wavestate, but I think that Modwave has the more beautiful and complex capabilities. Modwave reminds me of THE VECTOR SYNTH. End Sidebar. I am telling you, my friend, I have spent HOURS in email with PETER. And I'm a nobody. YOU TWO NEED TO TALK...like on telephones. Peter will take time with you and--I predict--will add the functionality that you desire. The guy is a math genius. He's very patient and is intent on pleasing his customers. KULT is the Dawesome plug that, to me, is just a noises machine. Doesn't seem musical compared to his previous plugs. Again, thanks for causing me to look hard at Modwave. I've owned SERUM for years. Never liked its sound. Seems harsh and edgy to me and is probably WHY--in the beginning---I ruled out Modwave without even trying it.
You love Modwave. Do you care for WAVESTATE?? John Skippy L., as you likely well know, did the sounds for the original wavestate. He did a big stream when Wavestate dropped, John was wowed in truck the evolution of the tech. Just wondered if you’ve demo’d Wavestate ?
Hey @watchaddicts1213, thanks for watching! So, yeah, I own both the Korg wavestate hardware and wavestate native plugin and I love that synth as well. (I was a beta tester on wavestate/wavestate native and also modwave native. With wavestate, I focused a lot on the Sample Builder utility, more than the VST itself.) While I haven't actually featured wavestate in any of my videos, KRC Mathwaves actually has multisamples for wavestate that were created from the original 29,000 single-cycle waveforms from the original Mathwaves collection. modwave and wavestate share the same core architecture and the main difference is that wavestate is purely sample-based and has the wavesequencing stuff, while modwave has a wavetable oscillator. (Their handling of "plain old multisamples" is basically identical.) The modulation capabilities of these synths remind me of the E-mu Emulator 4 and later E-mu modules, which is to say that more or less anything non-audio-rate can modulate anything else and there are modulation processors for doing "fancy stuff". I call wavestate the "final form" of the Emulator series of instruments. Of course, wavestate doesn't by itself sample, but these days that isn't so much an issue for us. I actually really enjoy programming patches on the wavestate hardware and I bought it during Covid when I was living at my place in Palm Springs, but all my gear was in San Francisco. I spent many hours with it during that time as a sanity-saver. (And this was before it had the user sample input features.) I have a deep and abiding love for that synth. Aside: while there are some cheesy samples in the factory set (which is shared by both modwave and wavestate), there are some real gems in there. For example, there's a Mariachi trumpet articulation that is absolutely charming (and seemingly unique).
What about 3rd Wave synth from Groove Synthesis ? Are you a fan?
Hey there, @watchaddicts1213. I haven't played one in person, but I think it sounds lovely. While modern digital filters are great sounding, I do like the sound of digital oscillators through real analog filters. As for whether it's worth the price, well... that's up the individual I guess. One thing I think is weak is that it doesn't seem to have much memory available for user wavetable import, which is a missed opportunity for an instrument of that caliber. I'm also a bit surprised that no KRC Mathwaves user has told me they use Mathwaves with the 3rd Wave. (The "Serum/Vital" format should import perfectly to 3rd Wave and I'd love to hear how some of them sound in the 'Wave!)
@@kcrosleyAll I heard from the 3rd Wave so far is gorgeous. Korg should have shipped the Modwave with analog filters too.
Some beautiful sounds in there! I can’t pull trigger on it either. I have PPG 3.0 (2010-sized GUI, magnifying glasses required, and NAVE and Largo, blah blah, Waldorf is just behind in with their UI and graphics, I agree , Mictowave sounds really a good; it bugged me that no token discount was offered to Waldorf customers. The interface is just NOT slick, a bare minimum approach to it. For $150, the UI should look like a XILS LABS synth…- some works of art there . I’d grab it without hesitation for 75 bucks. I wish they’d done RHE WAVE! The big dog with keyboard and tilt-up like minimoog layout. THE WAVE was their moment of glory
Yeah, Microwave VST sounds great, but it doesn't scratch any special itch for me, so I did not wind up licensing it at the price they're currently asking! (I agree that it would be a lot more attractive at about half the price. Also, I think it's weird that there's no easy wavetable import and I never did figure out a workaround.) And like I pointed out in the video, the intro pricing for the Streichfett VST was impossible to pass up, so the launch of this one felt kinda weird to me. 🤷♂️
@@kcrosley I agree. Microwave needs to be a DEC 31st at 11PM for $59 and I would buy it. Add it to the other 5 or 6 hundred plugs. What I need: a winning lottery ticket...and a 48 hour day! I might then have the time to learn a lot of what I already own.
Have you considered a MAC? Happy to have found you!
Glad to have you here watching! Thanks! While I'm an iPhone user, I'm not a Mac fan (mostly based on price vs performance issues). That phantom "ba donk" seems to be less frequent lately, but I'm still not sure what it is. I suspect it might be a somewhat aged USB hub acting up. (And it gives me an opportunity to roll my eyes at random moments and serves as comedic relief, right? 🫠)
@@kcrosley APPLE is awful; the devil maybe. I am 10 years in and scared to death of losing LOGIC and FINAL CUT PRO. They are problem-ridden and a ripoff: You can't open the case, can't really upgrade them. Somehow, like heroin, they suck you in and you're an ADICT. So, much more VALUE in a PC, not to mention the customization possibilities. I'm gonna watch all your MODWAVE stuff. I suspect it'll be a Beast.
hey keith just found out about you today and I wanted to tell you, that you are an absolute inspiration. im actually shocked how awesome you are :D you are a wonderful spirit. thank you so much for all this super interesting content. bit low on moneys rn, but as soon as im back on my feet, imma buy that krc pack :) for now the super extensive sampler will keep me very busy and help me out a ton with a project im up to rn. thanks again awesome guy!
@@manwithadream2043 well, golly. First, thanks for watching and (so effusively) commenting! Liking and subscribing means as much as paid purchases, so please do that if you haven’t! 😀 I don’t know that I deserve being called awesome, inspirational, and wonderful, but I accept the compliment and absolutely accept that my content is “super interesting” (as I compulsively say). 😉
Back in the day I lusted after a Microwave XT synth but could never afford one. Now I'm all grown up the originals going 2nd hand are still out of my price range! 😄
@@RealmsOfThePossible in that case, you just might be the target market for the plugin! Thanks for watching and chiming in!

I create a lot of experimental electronica and I find that Myth is actually really useful for this
@@sirvazo1633 hey, whatever works for you! The pitch for Myth highlighted the “resynthesis” aspects and I found them lacking for the reasons I relate in the video. I see there have been some small updates to Myth, but I haven’t explored them much.
