Lawn mower idle and govenor problem on a Tecumseh motor
Great video but would have been nicer if you would have placed the camera on a tripod. Was hard to follow with my old eyes 🤓.
@@elieli8368Thanks. I have since upgraded to a tripod.
Thanks for the update...
Had 3 Tecumseh Vector carbs that the throttle plates were sticking on. Ended up taking the plates off and sanding the plate edges down.
Do you have some more light?
That was fascinating! Thank you!
@@njwood51 Your welcome. Please like and subscribe. Thanks.
What's broken part called?
A microswitch
You should have put more detail in the video. It would have been nice to see how all the cables are installed.
Hunk of gasket or oring or fuel line broke down by ethanol at at least one time in its life! I have had super bad luck w ethanol. Period. In older stuff anyway and all 2 strokes.
Well, I tried your fix and it did work, but I've got a better one. Over the last few years, I've discovered the amazing cleansing power of Simple Green detergent. Ive used it for general cleaning for years, but recently found out that it really works well as a stain pre-treatment for clothing and if you have a mildew problem in your shower, you can clean with SImple Green first, then rinse and apply your regular mildew treatment. THe combination works so much better! Now, back to the primer. Soak the single gasket for about 30-seconds in simple green, massaging both surfaces gently until they feel smooth. Insert the gasket, reassemble the the air cleaner baseplate on the carb, the primer should work perfectly. Apparently Simple Green causes the gasket to swell slightly and that seals it on both surfaces. !!!!!
Any tips for next longer jet stuck up there next? Thanks
@@mike-cr4er use an Allen key and try to force it down.
If you have.pushed it down as far as you can by going thru the carb body, try going in from the bottom with a small crochet hook. Hook it and pull down. Another way is to use a nail or something similar thru the holes on the sides, making contact with the nail pointed in an upward position. Using the tip of the nail to lower the tube by pressing firmly while raising the head of the nail. Little tiny movements but it does work.
I recently replaced the cable on my PowerSmart push mower. The cable I got wasn't OEM, but it worked fine the first 3 times I ran it, but all of a sudden it doesn't want to fire up. I pulled the spark plug and sniffed it for gas and it smelled like it was getting gas. I put a spark checker in and lone behold, nothing. I have a feeling it's this kind of killswitch that's the issue. That or the ignition coil magically shit the bed.
@@BallBusta Unfortunately PowerSmart is a terrible brand. I don't even work on them.
@@berardia4 Yea, I don't blame ya. I took the shroud off to check the killswitch and the dang break shoe just fell out. I'm guessing they just glued it in or something. Turns out, it was the the killswitch that wasn't disengaging. The new cable must have stretched just enough and didn't want to pull the spring back all the way.
@@berardia4 I do appreciate the video. I probably would have replace the ignition coil and not even have check the kill switch in the first place. So thank you!

great video except now what do you do with the left over ethanol and water left from pouring the gasoline off?
@@nickgiarratano28 Thanks. So you can just let the water/ethanol evaporate. Please like and subscribe.
If they would grease them at the factory we would not be going thru this.
So how did you actually fix the problem, you forgot to show that part 😮
@@RafaelReynoso-oy1zy remove and replace flywheel key. Other videos show how to do that.
Adjust the self propel cable first. Easy to tighten.
Toro claims no need to replace oil... just top it off. Total BS. Mine looked just as black as yours when I dumped it after two years light usage. I'm glad I ignored their instructions.
I have to cut the grass or l can't go fishing. Mine does that , bought it used, never checked the blade sharpness. Drops clumps all over the yard.
Thank you for explaining the orientation of the seat and which way 'down' is (down from how it sits while working on it vs 'down' when on the engine). Also the tip about how the float should be flat and the tip about putting a little oil on the seat. Both helped.
@@BillDavis-zd9rs Thank you. Glad it helped. Please like and subscribe. 😁
My walk behind lawnmower that is 12 years old I always changed the oil with synthetic oil and would run it easily 25 hours worth of lawn mowing. Changed it every spring and it never uses a drop of oil, always at the full line and wasn't even that bad because of frequent oil changes! My DR trimmer mower just bought has that "never have to change the oil, just add" sticker on it. That will always get a yearly oil change! Both engines are Briggs and Stratton.
The surging problem comes from o ring that slides on to intake tube. You are sucking air. The bigger jet is compensating for the extra air.
That o ring does not seal once it is hit with carb cleaner
I've got one of these and the carb was leaking, so I thought I would just get a gasket kit and get it all cleaned up. then I found out entire new carbs are like 19 bucks on Amazon
@@flutetubamorg you can go with that but I've found them to be hit and miss if they work.
I found a aftermarket carb on Ebay a few days ago for maybe $10.89 plus tax with free shipping, and that kit included 1 metal carb, 1 breather filter, 1 primer bulb, 1 spark plug, carb gasket and carb o-ring seal. Don't know if it will last, but my original carb was shot and clogged so bad with dried gas, that it couldn't be cleaned out.
GREAT VIDEO ! The lever on the top on mine was loose. So even though it would work sometimes , sometimes it didn't. I took the carb off to clean it. Was already shiny inside. When I was putting it back together the lever wiggled and moved loosely. I'm watching this video because I couldn't remember what direction it was supposed to move. You answered my question exactly. Thank you for sharing that info. *GREAT VIDEO !*

What is that hose called I'm looking at
Thanks for the video! With a bit of luck I was able to simultaneously twist the bushing with vice grips and slowly pry/push it off with a hefty screwdriver. Heat definitely helped kick start it.
Yard Machines 21" Push Mower - 11A-B0BL700 ..start at first pull....can't stop . kill switch is not working..how to fix?
Do not buy a lawn mower with a Tecumseh motor...problems never end !!
A guy i bought a pushmower frame from, gave me a Tecumseh engine that was bolted to it. I just recently started using the Tecumseh engine after sitting many years and its not too bad, but the biggest problem is setting the idle speed and governor spring , so the engine will run properly, and not too fast. Personally, i like older B&S engines best with the carb that sits bolted on top of the gas tank, those B&S engines are the best, in my opinion.
hey i have a question maybe you can help..i hope lol..well we have same mower it cut grass 2 weeks ago..have replaced the carburetor..new stop cable..also..was running great..if i buy gas at gas station it will start right away but will stop after a minute..is it the water in the gas?? im going try a can 4cycle from store..but it will start everytime run for minuite and die

Update....... After cleaning the carb, changing the gas and gas can, changing air filter, changing the oil, checking the auto choke.... it still stalled. It turned out the self-propel cable needed tightening. Now it runs great. Toro model 21464 BTW.... Toro says you don't need to change the oil.... well.... ya do! Mine was thick and very dark gray.
My previous Toro lasted over 20 yrs with minimal maintenance. I bought a new one two years ago. Nothing but trouble.
The key is using fuel stabilizer
@@stevo5976 Not in my situation. Started right up even after sitting all winter. I store it empty. It turned out my self-propel cable was too loose. I guess it got more loose over time. Once I tightened it up..... it runs like a champ with no issues at all.
@barneyfyfe8313 true storing it empty is also an option. I'm in Florida so I cut the grass some even in the winter. I also use marine fuel without ethanol.
@@stevo5976 I'm in NY. I store my snowblower dry as well. Each late fall it starts right up. That reminds me. I have to replace the belts. Thanks!!!
IRREGARDLESS!! 4:46
it burns the oil so fast you need to "check and add"
Good jop tank
Nice video. 👍
Same situation but even after replacement of the Main Jet with a new one the engine is still surging
There could be other causes for the same symptoms. Possibly an air leak, or fuel restriction in the tank or line.
Check that the o ring on back of carb fits tube good. Took me a while but this was my surging problem
Thanks. Good information. What did you do with the ethanol that you removed?
Thanks. Please subscribe if you found it helpful.. You could let it evaporate depending on how much water is in it or burn it. I was planning on doing a follow up video as I have gotten this question many times.
Hate Tecumseh too hard to fix poorly engineered carb/ govenor access etc
Tecumseh easy ones chief
Do this and you can adjust height without bending anything out. I agree using the pry bar will work but is not permanent. This worked for me and can't work its way back in. Washers are no good. Need a fixed "spacer" instead. ruclips.net/video/RVK_po7BRZsu/видео.html
I always wondered what that plastic nozzle was for, than when my mower would not prime or run this video solved my problem, thanks
Thanks. Have no idea what it is for either. Please subscribe. Thanks
Wait…so we don’t use the grease fittings?? I don’t understand what the grease fittings are for
If your machine has greese fittings you would use them.
The zerk fittings are for the bushings on the trans axle, not the wheels.

It's for the folks that don't take their finger off the prime bulb when they're priming. It's a messed up engineering idea. It reduces the priming bulb's efficiency by about 70 %. Priming bulbs worked just fine without the hole in the middle but God knows, we can't leave well enough alone. Engineers have to account for their paychecks somehow.
This was my issue. Took apart a clean carb just to find out I was not taking my finger off of the hole between presses. Thx!
I kind of thought perhaps there was a check valve in that nipple that was inop. What a foolish idea that adds cost and dissatisfaction.
