Scammed! I accidentally bought a fake Tudor Black Bay 58
Here’s a short video of my experience accidentally buying a fakeTudor Black Bay 58. Please note that since making the video, I have opened the caseback and it houses a generic unbranded movement.
The bigger reminder is to buy from reputable sources and be extra careful when there’s no documentation, but see if you can spot the differences.

    My ZF BB58 rep is built better than the real Omega Aqua Terra I just bought. In fact, it's probably the favorite in my entire collection. The 12 year old craftsman that assembled it was a wizard at his trade, I give him that. Strangers compliment it often.

    It took me a lot of hours of research, but I can see the issues with it. It's not terrible looking, but it's clear from the tone and finishing of the hands, the post for the handstack, and the clasp engraving. All of those aspects are glaringly incorrect.

    For what its worth, I've had a very similar experience with my SBDX017. The bezel was really stiff and it started losing time. Repair effectively included replacing the entire exterior for $2k.

    I bought one on Aliexpress for $120. The main differences are: The movement is a generic unbranded movement. That is why they don’t have the see-through back. Also, the bezel action and crown are pretty rough. Finally, the GMT hand doesn’t work well or at all. Beware- these come with nice boxes. The straps and bracelets are all branded. A good beater watch.

    It seems like the non-in house tudors are now using whats seems to be standard eta and sellita 2824-2 and SW200-1 movements, they are decorated and have a fancy rotor but they don't have the fancy regulator like in the past so it would be kind if easy for 1 if the 4 cloke 2824 producers in China to copy, they could even buy a real stellita movement (maybe 100 to 150 dollars in bulk for standard) and get it decorated. You can remove the ghost date position on any 2824 or clone. Buying used I would demand to see the movement, if it's not in house then I would have to get it verified by a 3rd party.

    The main things to look for are the winding feel will be massively different from a real one. The screw pins on the bracelet also sit flush like on a Rolex but on real Tudor watches they have a slight curve ball end to them. Thirdly try the double locking clasp. On the fake you can pull it open by putting your finger/s underneath the clasp and pulling outwards. The real one is designed to stop just that. Lastly the print on the dial will be somewhat duller than on an original one.

    Thank you for your video. I own a SBDX017. I also had crown issues similar to your. It surprised me as I am very careful with my watches. Sent it to SEIKO USA for service. Received it back but the crown action seemed overly tight. After a week I could barely pull out the crown. Since it was under warranty from the service, I sent it back. Before I received it back I got a call from the service center saying they “repaired” the watch but that there is some wear on the threading. She said if it becomes a problem again, the case would need to be replaced. I feel like that’s ridiculous and a faulty design on their part. Especially give the cost of the watch. Not sure what I will do at this point. The watch has sentimental significance. If I replace the case I feel like it’s not the same watch. And if I replace the case, will this happen again? I’m very disappointed with SEIKO.

    Few differences: 1. The rivets are too small. 2. Lume pip is too dark. 3. Reference number is laser burnt. 4. Dial print is too bright. 5. The crystal is milky. 6. The crown tube is a little too long. 7. Tudor stamp on the clasp is too shallow.

    I know this vid is several months old but I wonder if purchasing a new crown to try on the old case would have rectified the issue. You have the old case tin hand now so you could certainly test that theory with a new crown if you are able to source one and you would have a spare for your new case if ever needed. I agree wholeheartedly in your method of engaging the crown threads counterclockwise before screwning the crown down. As someone who services vintage Seiko on a regular basis and someone who has opened the MM300, I know the crown threads can get fouled or lose their effectiveness. Your old case crown tube and threads may very well be junk but who knows. I had an SKX007 with a similar issue and purchased a new crown for it and the new crown engages properly and threads all the way to the case with over 2 turns were before I cold only get the crown to rotate about 1.25 turns. Had a vintage Citizen Challenge diver with a similar issue and a new crown resolved the matter. Thanks for the vid.

    Whoa, hold up. $2500+ USD for service and a bad crown replacement? For a $3200 watch (Irimote edition)? This just single-handedly removed this watch from my long term daily grail list. To think I was going to sell my Breitling for one. That is unacceptable. Ive been trying to justify not purchasing one of the Luxe line models because of their garbage 6rXX movements because I know this has the much better 8L movement. Unbelievable.

    • @ReluctantWatchCollector
      @ReluctantWatchCollector Год назад

      Thanks for your comment. Yes I put the vid up as a cautionary tale but I believe the crown issue was only a factor in first generation models although I can’t confirm. The only reason I went through with the repair was for the original design without the Prospex logo on the dial but there is no economic justification. I don’t think there are other dive watches that match MM quality at anywhere near this price point, but potential buyers should be aware of this Achilles heel. To say the least I’m disappointed with Seiko.

    The Tudor Black Bay, wether it's the original 41 or the 58 has a unique feature where the bezel is slightly harder to turn when it's at the prime 12 o'clock position. I don't need to tell you why so is this, but I think this is a point worth checking when you're buying a new watch.

    • @ReluctantWatchCollector

    This is one of my fears with my sbdx017. The crown has always required patience. Bought it new and from Day One had to be very careful to make sure it catches and screws in correctly. Ive owned it for 6 years now and still make sure not to be careless. Im also like this with my IWCs, Tudor, and Omega. As for the MM300, i just had it serviced locally from a very qualified and experienced watchmaker after it was running slow. The crown had been acting more strange than usual. When unscrewing to wind or set it wouldn’t “click” out like is used to for winding position. Anyways, service went well. Still the crown gives me anxiety. If (knock on wood) it ever does go on me, I’d do the same as you and replace the case. And that’s for a 017. The 001 i wish i had for the thicker indices alone.
