Will I be able to complete the PhD?
Просмотров 184Месяц назад
Students thinking about applying to a PhD course sometimes wonder whether they would be able to complete the PhD course, whether they are smart enough or tough enough to finish and get the final degree. In reality, the answer is that it is not about how smart or talented you are, but rather whether you are able to push through and perservere. You need to commit to this course of action and then...
Leaving the translation last
Просмотров 151Месяц назад
A question related to writing a paper or a dissertation is whether we can leave the translations last. Because we know that they are important, but we might prefer to first write the bulk of the dissertation and move on to the translations only once everything else is ready. This way we can work on them together in batch. Although this may appear logical, I fundamentally think that this is not ...

Researching Chinese painting - Michael Cavayero

For such times, there is a simple Find and Replace solution in word. You need to hit the Ctrl ...
Chinese seals found in Ireland - 19th century antiquarianism

There were several dozen Chinese seals found in Ireland between 1780 and 1853, causing a minor sensation not only among antiquarian enthusiasts but also in leading intellectual circles. They were brought together in a book published in 1850 by Edmund Getty, which bore the title Chinese Seals Found in Ireland. Because of the seal script characters on them, the seals were thought to be very old a...

This video is about a less commonly known phenomenon in medieval Chinese manuscripts, namely, the presence of joined graphs (hewen). So happy and surprised to see that Prof. Galambos had started using kindle two years ago. Sorry to be late to the “party”. Agree with many things you and your readers had mentioned. In addition, I often buy the same book in two versions - Chinese and English to study translation. For example, I’m reading Prof. Patricia Ebrey’s book “Emperor Huizong”, Chinese version is in a hard copy and English in Kindle. It’s a way to compare texts in both languages, which is what I’m interested in. I also like to use Kindle to read a topic which I am not familiar with, so I can use the dictionary to check words much more quickly than a physical book. Lolan Song

While I appreciate this interview, I wanted to add some context about the Cambridge Buddhist Temple located on Cromwell Road. Describing it as "a tiny house with a Sri Lankan monk" (at 26:24) doesn't quite capture its significance. The temple has been active for over six years and works closely with various groups in and around Cambridge. It regularly hosts events with participation from dozens of people and features teachings from prominent monks of various traditions. It plays a vital role in our community and contributes richly to the diversity of Buddhist practice in Cambridge. I believe it's important to recognise and respect the contributions of all Buddhist traditions in our community. Thank you for considering this perspective.

The only efficient way to learn Chinese characters is to look at their original oracle bone shapes. For example, how the heck am I supposed to memorize 'summer' 夏 xià? No logic there at all! Easy, just look at the original: a picture of a man kneeling before the sun. It might help if you learn that at the time of its creation the character read, and the word was pronounced not xià, but KRAːʔ. What the heck is KRA? Well, that's the ancient endonym of the 'Chinese' people, the Huaxia, or the Magnificent KRA. By the way, KRA also happens to be the endonym of Austronesian/Tai-Kadai/Kradai people who had populated central and eastern China before the (proto-)Chinese arrived from Tibet arount 4000 years ago. The (proto-)Chinese invaders forced the locals to learn the Sino-Tibetan words, but the grammar was lost forever. The process was called 'dramatic creolization' by the linguists. Which is why Chinese now has Tibetan words, but not Tibetan grammar. That's the proper way to learn Chinese characters!

His Wikipedia bio shows him to very much be a part of the Protestant Anglo-Irish Ascendancy class. Later in the 19th century, some people from this background famously were Irish nationalists - WB Yeats, Maud Gonne, etc. But in the first half of the 19th century, the 1801 Act of Union joining Ireland & Britain was still new, and most people of Getty's background would have been supporters of it.
