A song about the LA fires - from up in Altadena
I wasn’t looking to write a song about Altadena or the Eaton fire, but it sprang out in about 10 minutes. Apparently I needed to get it out. hopefully it helps start a little bit of healing after the fire.
This is just a quick phone recording captured thanks to a battery backup as we camp out on the edge of the burn zone without power or gas.

    I live on Maui and these fires are obviously so similar to what our island experienced. It's heartbreaking to see more people go through the same thing, especially all of the conspiracy theories that do nothing but bring harm. Rebuilding takes forever and it will never be the same, that's just the harsh reality and it sucks. I'm so sorry to everyone dealing with this horror right now.

    Thank you David for this informative video. I lived in Altadena in 2009, my mother lived there, and I'm gutted by the disaster. I find your survival skills and communication with neighbors very admirable and fascinating since the major news media is a joke. There needs to be contingencies for the people of LA to communicate in future fire disasters, as we all know there will be more. Good luck to you and your family and friends. Many of my colleagues lost their homes. All the best to you from NorCal.

    I just stumbled across this video and was delighted to hear that your studio and home are okay and your family is safe. A friend of mine, who also lives in Altadena, was also very lucky, but it was entirely due to her neighbors commitment to stay behind and try and save his own house. In the end he also saved hers. The rest of the houses on her street are all gone. She and her two roommates and their two cats are desperately looking for a place to live as her home won't be livable for at least a few months. (Putting the word out in case you hear of anything. Incidentally, she's also a musician. :) My wife is from LA and grew up in La Crescenta, but attended the Pasadena Waldorf school in Altadena. She was sad to see that much of the school campus is also gone. The two of us made a plan as to what we would do and take if there were a fire after the Marshall fire here in Colorado a few years ago. That fire also destroyed entire neighborhoods and businesses. As a musician and avid music collector it's hard to know what to take. In the end after our son and pets were safe and my 5 year old already had everything that he wanted to take I would grab our passports, my sons first stuffy, a small box of hard drives with photos and my own music on them, an unframed U2 lithograph that took me nearly 20 years to get all 4 members to sign, the very first record award I ever received (because like you with that one piece of gear that told you that "you made it," this told me that I achieved my dream of working in the music industry,) and finally...I would take this single loose photo print that definitely has seen better days, but is the only copy that I have of the first time I met Bono. If I am lucky to have enough time to grab all of these things that's what I would take. I hope that your brother-in-law is able to rebuild quickly.

    • @davidpetersmusic

      I enjoyed hearing the list of what you would bring. As you suggested, we had similar impulses. My wife was pretty organized ahead of time in case something like this happened, which helped us a lot. Hard drives were definitely top of my list, not just to preserve older projects, but to preserve all the ones that are currently in process!

    Thank you for sharing. Your timeline is very similar to ours. Altadena is unincorporated and had 2 fire stations. The neighborhood was doomed with the wind anyways. It did very much feel like we were on our own and to defend ours. Looked like hell, sounded like hell. I came back to take watch too cause I was worried about embers and looters. And just want to get the guitar center information out there into the wild for all our musicians that have lost something again I know it’s not enough to replace what you had but hopefully it’s a way to get started again. Last bit thank you for sharing your perspective because I was feeling like not the greatest dad in the world when I started gathering up some of my instruments, even though we had plenty of time. Your perspective reminds me that some of these things can be more than just tools.

    • @davidpetersmusic
      @davidpetersmusic День назад

      @ We don’t choose our feelings, so you don’t need to feel guilty about having them. If your family had plenty of time to leave, the smart thing for you and your family, was to get out valuable things, and things would help you work. But if there’s a part of that you feel like you miscalculated, I’m guessing now you wouldn’t make the same choices again. A lot of why I left things in the studio was not some elevated sense of what’s more important, but misplaced optimism, a little laziness, and perhaps a bit of resignation. We learn a lot about ourselves in these moments and not all of it is what we hoped for or expected. But knowing helps us make more-conscious choices in the future.

    Its really good to hear survival stories. As you hear a lot of stories of what was lost. So are there still powerlines going into your places. I saw they were pulling up the underground transformers presumably to investigate them, sounds like the grid is very disrupted, I would be suprised if there was power there anytime soon if all the access points going into it. I think even people outside the area still had power turned off but this is just stuff I encountered today, can't verify it. They are sending in insurance teams into the burn area probably to verify claims orwhatever. They probably want to do a safety aseesment due to all the hazmat stuff that might be present in the area as house fires can be pretty toxic. Help poured from all over Spain and even from other countries. Of course, the media attention shifts fastly and it could seem that everything is already OK. It's crazy because I went through the same process with my gear. I didn't really care about any of it. It was all too mounted up, too dark, and I had to protect my family. I too was at peace and didn't really care about losing my stuff. I didn't even take my bass. I dropped it when grabbing my cats and just decided it's ok to leave it. I ended up coming back and getting it a few hours later, cleaned up the yard and got the hell outta there. Crazy how similar our experience was but you seemed to be much more collected. I'm new to the neighborhood, only 6 months here, so I didn't know how the fire would navigate it. I'm from Santa Clarita so I'm no stranger but it was the first time I had to be in charge of my family's safety.

      Really glad your ok. We were pretty close, the next street up parallel to us is New York so the fire was quite literally less than a city block away. Our neighborhood has been historically protected due to the geography and placement of structures which I later learned from neighbors. And apparently the large trees actually aid in preventing the spread because it's actually very difficult for thick green wood to catch, let alone stay lit. Although the amount of debris in yards and the street was absolutely unbelievable. Some peoples front doors were completely blocked and random patio furniture managed to make it into my backyard over an 8ft fence. Insanity.

    hey dave, glad to hear you survived this pretty well! thanks for the update - after the election i dropped out of the news 100% so i barely saw anything and as you say the news suck here anyway. 2 things that struck my mind here were a) are those houses all built from wood? not stone? and b) knowing about the dangers in this area and referring to your note with the flying amber - couldnt you just invest in some kind of giant anti-burn blanket that can be pulled over a house? i´m sure that won´t cost millions and would have probably saved many houses.

    I totally relate to your commentary on the news media. I told my family from afar that even though it might be enticing to watch the coverage that nothing on the news is reflecting the event. Everyone is basically on their own. I was in Sierra Madre at my studio when I got a text saying "is there fire over there". I went out and onto the roof and saw the glow about 6:50. The chain of events to follow was pretty similar. I went to my house and packed a bag knowing the canyons would be evacuated. I came down to my studio and starting deciding what to take. Similar choices to yours. Mics, guitars, some vintage amps. It had to satisfy a certain ratio of how much space it took up verses the creative or monetary value it would have in starting over. After I'd packed my truck with all the sort of "structured" pieces I began looking at things I could put in the spaces. 500 series modules. More, smaller mics. Finally, I decided to take my Mothership out of the rack and that was the last piece. After the truck was packed I spent the night on the roof watching the fire sweep across from the west side of the city to the east. I was wondering if the wind would push it into the city but I never really did. I was up all night and when the sun started coming up I could make out the black smoke plumes here and there and knowing those were houses. I was starting to believe the city had been spared. I'm so thankful but I feel terrible for Altadena and my friends and colleagues there that are now scattered to the four winds.
