Kilfitt Makro-Kilar 40mm Lens Review - Popular Photography's 1955 Dream Lens
A detailed review and historical documentation of the Kilfitt Makro-Kilar 40mm standard prime lens in f 3.5 and f 2.8 specification.
In December 1955, Popular Photography Magazine stated:
"WHAT'S YOUR DREAM lens? A needle sharp f/1 which you could use for wide-angle, normal and telephoto shots at will? All this in one neat package of optical glass which you could focus on a bug at two inches or a mountain at infinity-with generous depth of field at both extremes? This lens hasn't been designed yet, but the closest thing to it is the new, compact, f/3.5, 40mm Makro-Kilar which will fit most popular 35mm single-lens reflex cameras accepting interchangeable lenses."

Very well presented. Thank you. Would love to see many more reviews of the lenses you showed on he final screen !
I used this lens at a wedding yesterday. The bokeh is incredible and it’s almost swirling with good catseye bubbles type
I just noticed your Sony T/S adapter has the tripod mount. I don't believe they come with it for the Z body mount.
I checked out Mr Buffalo Chalet photos set. Are those interior shots taken with this lens (with or without stitching?) Or some other T/S lens? Thank you for the information!
Impressive work compiling all of this!
Hi, thank you for the video, I found it very informative.... how do I go about obtaining an M42 mount to adapt the re: auto-topcor 5.8cm f1.4?
One of my favorite lenses of all time. I used it yesterday during a difficult desert shooting with 30-year-old low ISO Soviet black and white film, over 40-degree temperatures and having to use a shutter speed of between 1/30th and 1/60th of a second. I used a Topcon RE2 and the 58mm f1.4 and a Nikon camera with a standard Nikkon 50mm lens. The Topcon combination provides good photos due to the lens and its detail.
Such a great video. Cheers!
Thanks for a great review. Years ago, I purchased the Nikkor 28mm f/4 perspective control lens to use when I did not want to use the rise/fall/shift features of my large format camera. However, I was shocked and disappointed by its poor image quality.
信息量非常大,很不错!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Can you do a review of Canon FD 50mm 1.4 S.S.C
Thanks for explaining why my economically disposable FD lenses are still pretty good!
Waiting for parts 2 and 3. Interested in their Barnack-style camera. Their consumer products so far have some problems, don't they.
Great lens ❤️
Outstanding work. I look forward to more videos!
Thankyou @majorkong7388, appreciate your feedback! More videos to come, hopefully they wont take as long to research and produce (the Kilfitt review was some 6 months in the making).
Absolutely amazing work. One of the most comprehensive reviews I have ever seen.
Many thanks @w0lfyovi294, very much appreciated. I was a little concerned it might have been too much information, however I wanted to make sure I covered everything off. Notably, having discovered that quite a bit of the information floating about online pertaining to the Kilfitt lenses is inaccurate (or close but not quite right) it's an opportunity to provide an update that hopefully will be useful for those wanting to know more.
@@durlacher3524 I absolutely love the background story and details, especially about the optical engineers making these lenses and the physics around it. You are doing what I dreamt of doing for many years (but I have other priorities and interests now). I started looking for some of these lenses to buy because they are so unique and interesting.
Good work! Obviously a ton of research went into this. I noticed an Edixa branded 4cm lens - the only other one I've seen other than my own copy ;-) As you mentioned, they measured focusing distance from the front of the lens rather than to the film plane; not sure if any other manufacturer used those specs or if that's a quirk unique to Kilfitt?
Hi Spectralcav, many thanks for your comment and noted on the Edina branded lens, quite the rarity! With regards to the close focus distance, it seems to be specific to the Kilfitt Makro lenses. The reality being that the 5cm close focus distance quoted for type D lenses ends up being around 20cm from the film or sensor plane when the lens length and flange focal distance is added - still pretty remarkable for 1955!
Great video, thanks!
Hi @Snikkelbek, greatly appreciate your comment. A lot of time and research went into this knowing it would be of interest to a rather small yet discerning viewership, The positive feedback is encouragement to continue making more reviews.
interesting, thank you
Many thanks for commenting, very much appreciated.
Yes sensor size does not change focal length but changes the angle of view and the depth of field according to the changed image scale. For the latters the crop factor is indeed a very important information!
this deserves more views and subscribers. very detailed information that arent tackled by most videos about shift lenses
AMAZING REVIEW
Eagerly awaiting your announced review of the Zeiss Contax PC-Distagon 2,8/35mm
Excellent review, thank you for your effort. How do you think of the Pentax FA645 33-55mm f/4.5 AL for the same application?
Really perfect and informative review . With this video, all aspects of this lens were reviewed and there will be no need to see any other reviews. I ordered a sample of this lens today and with this review I know all aspects of it.
Hi Durlacher, I wanted to thank you for such a thoughtful and superbly crafted analysis. Wow this is how lens reviews should be done, first with a professional mind to how the lens would be used, and then such a detailed technical discussion. I especially found the lens circle analysis chart and focal length conversion chart useful, I screenshotted them. Man this was great! Appreciate all your hard work. Shooting video with a mirrorless Nikon Z6. I am going to follow your recommendation for a studio livestream application, that is similar to a newsroom broadcast setup. The camera lens center is set at 65 inches, from the ground. Which is the eye height of the subject/talent. Right now, to attain proper framing from his top of head, down to mid torso - the camera must then be angled down quite a bit. Creating a slight distortion to his face, but more important quite a bit of parallax distortion on the tall bookshelf behind him on the set. By using your setup, I will be able to fix this with shift.. Perfect. Of note, I did make a run at this with the ROKR adapter and a kit of three Pentax 6*7 lenses I purchased from different sources, figuring the bigger image circle the better. Although the solution 'worked perfectly' to solve the purpose I describe above. Man those lenses were such junk compared todays standards! Like low contrast, low color saturation, fuzzy no matter what. Harsh stark bigtime in your face reality check when compared to native Nikon Z lenses. So I sold the kit. But with this detailed review with what appears to be an excellent lens, I'm excited about running at the solution again! Thanks!!
Hi Peter, my apologies for the belated reply and my sincere appreciation for your positive feedback - words of encouragement. Delighted to note the information was useful for your needs, and hoping the intended application resolved your bookshelf distortion problems. Once you've used the shift functionality it's very difficult to go back normal primes. Noted on the 6x7 options, I had looked into these originally but the focal lengths were too restrictive. The 645 lenses are a delight to use - I've been using the SMC Pentax-FA 645 120mm F4 MACRO fo close ups on my next video project and the image resolving is superb - it just looks better! Although the extra weight on the fotodiox adapter keeps me slightly on edge. More shift reviews to follow!
Loving this video! This is the second of your videos that I watched after I came to your channel by searching Topcon information. Very thorough and wonderfully produced!! Definitely subscribed and will be watching all your videos! Hoping for a video on canon FL lenses, maybe the 19mm or the 58mm Or anything Minolta Rokkor related! Thank you very much for making such entertaining and informative videos! ❤
Great review! Very high quality both in content and video shooting. A great guide for architecture photography. Looking forward to see new review of Pentax 645 33-55 and 55-110 lens.
Many thanks for your positive feedback, very much appreciated. The 645 33-55 and 35mm lenses are awaiting their turn for review - I have high expectation for the 35mm. Not sure on timing, I keep getting distracted acquiring new lenses, but will get there eventually.
I had one of those for my AE-1 in the early ‘80s. It was pretty good.
Wow what an immaculate review. I just bought this lens and adaptor for my Nikon
Wonderful work presenting a very interesting brand! Looking forward to the next episode,
Many thanks for your kind comment, very much appreciated. More episodes to follow - couldn’t agree more, it’s a very interesting brand.
just excellent, this is how a lens review should be done. Great work... now I need to get this lens :D
Quite authoritative and polished.
Great great great video. Very useful. I love. More please. 👍Thanks.
Hello, new subscriber here, keep going on. I really appreciate your content, especially the shift lens content. 👍
Many thanks for the positive feedback, words of encouragement. Quite a number of shift lenses still to review, will get cracking on the next video.
@@durlacher3524Thanks. See you next time. Best.
I'd like to see a review of the RE Auto Topcor 50mm F1.4
Hi John, on my list - following planned reviews of the Topcor 25mm and 35mm lenses (the 25mm is a beautiful lens and on initial review appears to be an excellent performer). More videos to follow. The 50mm 1.4 is meant to be exceptionally sharp.
Totally agree. These lenses are gems. Never confuse them with the cheaper UV Topcor.@@durlacher3524
Thank you for your review, full of useful information! One note though; sometimes it was hard for me to follow this review, as there was so much information available to me. At times I was trying to make sense of a slide, trying to work out how what it represents, while at the same time there’s a technical verbal explanation which isn’t directly commenting the slide, but actually discussing something remotely related to it. While it is important to provide enough information to maintain the viewers attention, according to research humans’ multitasking skills are notoriously bad. When put into a multitasking position, they’re receiving on only channel, and you can’t choose which one 😂 Keep it up!
Best and a more complete review of this lens so far!
Fotodiox has dropped its F mount adapter for Pentax 645 lenses and only offers Pentax 6x7 adapters.
It must be available again , i just bought one, Pentax 645/Canon R8 £230 with postage to the UK but another £50 in duty
Great video…stil Got some topcon in my cabinet…among the lenses a 58 1.4 and a 20mm f4
asking again - Would you know if the 20mm f4 exists in black paint? I have yet to run across one. Thanks!
Great in-depth review. Have you tried the 35mm f2.8 version?
Many thanks for your message, the 35mm PC is on hand awaiting it’s turn for review. Expectations are low, stay tuned for an update. Of interest I’m currently testing a Nikon AI lens that as adapted provides a 28mm-49mm zoom range with PC functionality. A little bulky but performance is thus far impressive.
Wow I’m curious about this zoom lens, but cannot find info on this one. Do you mind giving the specs?
The best and cheapest lenses on eBay right now.
I love mine, I have a black version I managed to buy from a house clearance auction.
Fantastic, and it’s noteworthy that good copies do come up from time to time outside the normal channels. It’s a little saddening to say, but I think what increase in supply that may eventuate will likely be from former owners passing away. The black versions do look great.
@durlacher3524 I was at the right place at the right time, it came with the camera, lens caps, polarising filter, reverse fitting which allows me to shoot it 'the wrong way around' and extension tubes. It's in super condition, I have put zip ties around the rubber focusing grip because it us a little loose, but that's it. I use it a great deal. 👍
Great video - must have been a ton of work bringing all this information together. The 58/1.4 is an awesome lens and a pleasure to own and use. Not sure about it being the first with a rubber focus ring though. I have a Kilfitt Makro Kilar E 40mm f3.5 from around 1955, often touted as the first macro lens, which has a rubber focus grip.
Many thanks for your message and acknowledgement, yes it took a lot of work to put this one together. Noted on the Kilfitt - you are absolutely right, predates the Topcor by 8 years. This was one area of the claims I found difficult to confirm absolutely, Google was no help and a call out to Nikon and Canon forums returned results of speculation only. As such, I felt it necessary to preface the statement as ‘believed to be the first of its type’ knowing that at some point someone with greater knowledge will correct me. I greatly appreciate your input. I wasn’t familiar with the Kilfitt Makro before you comment, interesting to note the design has visual elements in common with the Topcor - could it have served as design inspiration? You’ve sparked my curiosity.
@@durlacher3524 No worries. I hesitate to post 'corrections' as they always seem like nitpicking or critism and are often taken as such ;-) Maybe the Kilfitt also wasn't the first! There are certainly some aesthetic similarities in style between the Kilfitt and the Topcor, maybe just coincidental. The grips on the Kilfitt lenses are also often missing or heavily degraded. Overall, the Topcor certainly has a more premium feel. Kilfitt is an interesting company that took their own path and created some unique lenses.
Great video! That probably looks a lot of time and effort, well done
Many thanks, greatly appreciate your acknowledgement. Yes, a lot of time and effort. Undoubtedly targeting a very narrow viewership, but for those interested, I hope it’s of value.
Many thanks Gerry, took longer than anticipated to put together but hopefully has everything covered. It’s the information that I was looking for when looking to purchase a Topcor 58 1.4 - but the information simply wasn’t available, or at least not in one spot. Working on the next video already, Canon’s best street photography lens. I’ll give you a hint, it’s 44 years old and can be purchased for as little as $21.
Finally a new old-lens review, I am waiting for it for so long. I like the history session of every lens you've talked and the PPT design is surprisingly professional.
Hi Durlacher. I found this review absolutely fantastic, very well researched and really very informative. Thank you for sharing! I'm making a break into professional architecture photography with my Fuji XT3 and will require Tilt Shift capabilities covering somewhere from 18mm focal length to 85mm. I think after watching this I am going to invest in this lens, as well as the 33-55 version. Can you also suggest a good wide angle lens to complete the kit? Many thanks and keep up the amazing work!
Apologies for the belated reply and many thanks for your positive feedback. Shift lens functionality is ideal for architectural applications, however if you’re using the XT3 you’ll need to factor in a crop factor for the lens angle of view equivalent. 45mm is already tight for most architectural applications, on an APSC sensor it’s going to be closer to 68mm - closer to a portrait lens! The 33-55 is better, but still not very wide when used on APSC. Ideally a 16mm lens as a starting point is needed (24mm equivalent) but they simply don’t exist in 645 format - unless you count fisheye lenses. I may have another solution for you that I’m working on, a shift zoom option for 35mm format lenses that will open up a huge variety of lens possibilities - if it works! Stay tuned, video coming up.
@@durlacher3524 Thanks for the comment. I order and tested the 33-55 with the Fotodiox convertor and returned both of them immediately as there image quality was very poor. I'm not sure the best way to describe it, but there was an effect similar to diffraction on the highlights of the image, giving it a blue tint. I have instead opted to pair the Canon TSE 24mm with a Fringer smart convertor. This will arrive tomorrow and I will let you know the result.
@@AndrewODriscoll-x5c Very sorry to hear the 33-55 didn't work out, I have yet to test this lens setup. Quality is reported not being as good as the 45-85mm, however the problems you experienced are of a concern. That being said, where you've ended up (despite the inconvenience of having to return lenses) is probably the best outcome. The Canon TSE-24mm II is a great performer and the focal length is much better suited for architectural appliactions. I haven't used the fringer adapters and would be very interested to hear how it performs.
@@durlacher3524 Yes I have heard several places that both the 645 prime lens and the longer focal length zoom are much better than the 33-55 but thought I'd see for myself. I am still in the market for a longer focal length as I find I often have good use for my 50mm lens whilst photographing exterior details and larger interior spaces. That being said I will see how the 24mm set up performs before investing anything more. I will let you know how I get on with the Fringer adaptor as soon as I test it
Thank you @durlacher3524 for the review ! @@AndrewODriscoll-x5c Hi ! I'm currently in the same situation of yours. I'm looking for the best shifting solution for a Fuji X-H2 and thinking about the Canon 24mm TSE + Fringer adapter. After using it for a few months, would you say it's a good setup ? Thanks in advance for your help !
i bought this lens after watching your video, i was lucky and got one made in Japan and almost new. With the mediocre ts adaptor still works perfect for archiecture, we wait for the next videos.
Many thanks and delighted to have been of inspiration. I hope you’re enjoying the lens combination. Yes, the adapter has its limitations, but In careful use the results can be fantastic. Just posted the latest video which took longer than anticipated, next few should be a bit quicker on the turnaround.
Thank you for this review, this is really helpful understanding the character of this lens. Especially for who looks for some perspective control lenses. Waiting for upcoming another perspective control video. Thank you so much!
