Harnessed Car Seats and the Car Rider Line
Starting kindergarten (or even first grade!) does not have to mean switching to a harness if your child isn’t ready for it!
Practice unbuckling and rebuckling over the summer, and leave the harness set to the correct length instead of loosening and tightening it so that when the child gets in they can simply click their buckles and go. If they are having trouble releasing the crotch buckle, an UnBuckleMe tool may be just what they need!
No matter how your child gets to school, remember: backpacks off before buckling up or sitting down on the bus!

    Hi Emily, we have a KidFit Zip Plus high back booster for my 5-year-old. This high back booster's backrest sits 90 degrees from the seat with no recline, so when he falls asleep, he slumps forward almost with his face down to his knees which I find alarming. The rear seat of the car does allow me to recline by a couple of inches, but the booster sits 90 degrees. I'm trying to decide whether to put a small wrapped-up towel under the front of the seat to allow the booster to recline or to use the retractor shoulder belt to "lock" the belt in position to keep him in the booster. What do you think?

    • @countrykidscarseatsafety
      @countrykidscarseatsafety 7 дней назад

      @@sophiethewestie Hi there! That sounds frustrating. Neither of those options would be a safe idea, if the booster is reclined the child can slip down under the lap belt, and locking it is not necessary for a booster rider. A few recommendations: 1. Is he able to go back into a harnessed seat at his age? One of the criteria for using a booster is the ability to stay upright in their belt, even if they fall asleep. He may benefit from a harness til he’s a bit older. 2. Teach him to look up at the ceiling when sleepy! That can help him stay upright. 3. Consider a different booster with deeper side wings for more support.

    • @countrykidscarseatsafety
      @countrykidscarseatsafety 14 дней назад

      Hi there! As a CPST I would not dream of giving unsafe or incorrect information. The vest is across her lap for most of the video (except the part where I am demonstrating to caregivers what NOT to do with it), and the manufacturer of the vest actually does permit the seatbelt to be locked if desired! Locking the belt is optional, but can be beneficial for some children who have a hard time staying in place.

    I very much disagree with this. There have been reports of dangers happening even when they know how to hold their head up. My son is two, has low muscle tone due to health issue. For him, I do not believe it's safe for him to be in head slump position.

    • @countrykidscarseatsafety
      @countrykidscarseatsafety Месяц назад

      That’s a perfectly valid concern when there is a medical need like that to consider, but for a child without any special medical needs that impact things like breathing and muscle control, it’s not a concern after they have good head control. If it were a concern after that age, we would have a ton of data to show that, because so many kids do sleep in the car with their heads in that position it would be happening often, but it simply isn’t because they can and do move their heads if needed, just like adults.

      Once a child is ready to forward face (at least age 2 or when rearfacing is outgrown for their convertible or all-in-one seat), the harnessed mode of a “harnessed booster” or “harness to booster” seat is an appropriate choice! There’s no safety difference to the child, a forward facing harness is a forward facing harness, whether it’s on a convertible, all-in-one, or harness-to-booster seat.
