I went to Vienna a couple of weeks ago, and I visited Hederplatz to then make my way through Ringstraße, the Operahaus and the Imperial Hotel with this song, alongside othef versions of Horst Wessel Lied, on my headphones. I must admit that was a glorious experience. I was truly moved and deeply touched. I got the illusion of living the enthusiasm, hopes and excitement that those people who were there at the time got to experience. I loved it. I got emotional about it.

Strangely nostalgic

This was eventually accorded an equal status in the Third Reich to the official National Anthem. Not all of the popular Nazi tunes were recent. For example, another very popular national tune was “Wenn Alle Untreu Werden”, which was written in 1814. Most of the popular marching tunes adopted by the Nazis were written long before they came to power. The “Hohenfriedberger March” was very popular and was written in 1745. Queen Elizabeth II was also very fond of this march and often had it played as her carriage travelled down the Mall to the Trooping of the Colour. By agreement, the BBC did not turn on the sound until the march was over as the fact that it had been so popular with the Nazis might have caused offence.
