Lee Universal Neck Expanding Die Review
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.2 года назад
Lately, I have experienced some very tight 9mm cartridge case mouths when trying to seat the bullet during reloading. Even after using the de-prime / resizing die I struggled to balance the bullet on the cartridge during the seating process. I then found the Lee Universal Neck Expanding Die and decided to try it out. My initial reaction is that I have had great results and will be adding to my ...
9 MM Reloading - Dialing in the Perfect Load

    What I don't understand about this is if you have a lee 4 die set for any caliber pistol, what was the point in the buying the universal expanding die if the pistol die set comes with an expanding die? I understand for rifle as most are only 2 or 3 die sets but pistols it doesn't make sense to me.

      @rbljackson, hello! I remember when I first bought the SR9C, I didn't know what holster to buy and found Ruger was offering the Mitch Rosen on their site. It is a great leather outside the waistband holster. I think it is this one: shopruger.com/SR9c-SR40c-Mitch-Rosen-Belt-Holster-RH/productinfo/50166/. For the SR9C this is still one of my favorite holsters and the primary carry for this gun. I have also bought a OWB Galco for my SA EMP 9mm, and several IWB from cross breed. Hope this helps! take care.

    Mike, I've another question; is it normal or unusual that when the 9mm case is rammed up for the resizing step, for the case to come down with sorta an abrasive or scratchy micro lines on it, and not look like it did when it went up at first? I did remove the decap pin from die and wiped it with alcohol rag, also ran a small piece with alcohol thu die body. Looking thru it, it looked shiny smooth, didn't see any scratches. I did 20 cases, light lube and they all had those marks. When I did my 30-06 and 30-30 cases I never experienced this. And this whole rock chucker press equipment I bought from an army buddy who bought it new when we bought our rifle's back in 89. The dies were new too. Now, 34 yrs later, I have purchased my 9mm p320 and I aldo want to reload this round, I bought this two-die set from another person on ebay. I'm wondering if there's a solution, or should I just return it?

    • @man_1911
      @man_1911 8 месяцев назад

      That is very interesting. From my personal experience it should look just like it did before it was resized. I do remember a while back I had a die acting up with a light line and trying to clean it did not fix the problem for me. While I didn't exhaust all cleaning options, to save time and headache, I ended up just buying a new die set and never had the problem again. This was just my experience and I wish you good luck, and great choice with the P320 btw. Take care!

    My 2022 estimate is based on reloading 380, 9mm and 223 ammo, cast iron single stage press, dies for each caliber, decapping die, powder measure, wet tumbler, primer pocket swager, bulge buster kit, lube tray, steel pins, lock rings, manual, trimmers, deburrer, ammo trays, caliper, calibration blocks, scale and calibration weights, additional lighting, storage containers and a bench. My equipment cost in 2020 was $950. In 2022, probably $1,100 My average 380 rounds material cost was18 cents. I made about 500 rounds My average 9mm rounds material cost was 19 cents I made about 2,200 rounds My average 223 rounds material cost was 28 cents. I made about 1,000 rounds Because I have a stockpile of primers, powder and bullets if you were to start in 2022; my estimated material costs are the 380's would go for 25 cents, the 9mm 27 cents and the 223 would go for 37 cents. The time spent scavenging brass, cleaning brass and reloading was about seventy to ninety hours. Then there is the time spent looking for primers, powder and bullets. At one point I was spending an hour a week just looking on the internet for primers. As of October 2022, my equipment and material cost have reached a break even point compared to the prices at the time I reloaded. As long as my time is free. Special note, as ammo prices went up and ammo got scare, so did the cost of primers, powder and bullets. Primers were non existent for 10 months. I have 4 stores I can buy primers and powder at, and most of the time they are out. I now have eight hundred dollars invested in powder, primers and bullets in storage. It is a couple years worth of shooting supplies. When any of them reach a certain point I start looking again. Reloading is not for everyone. The time involved is more than some can invest. The initial costs for equipment and supplies, same, it can be like paying a month's rent. Also, if you are easily distracted, don't like to follow or read instructions, don't like safety glasses, cut corners because you think you might get away with it, don't have time or space, reloading may not be for you. Reloading can be safe or it can be dangerous. It is your choice. A solid bench is a requirement, there's a lot of torque on the press at times. When my wife saw the lighting I was using she commented that I could tan while making ammo. Lighting and the bench must be figured into the equation. The space in the house for equipment, cleaning, reloading and supplies is significant. But I deeply enjoy reloading, it is a quiet solitary pursuit. It is details to take care of. It is equipment to clean, lube and maintain. My wife is on board with the investment and the time spent. But not all wives are like that. If you and your family can handle the investment of time, space and money, go for it. But consider all things first.

    Lyman (M) dies work much better. NOE makes inserts for the LEE die that makes it work like an (M) die too. I bought probably 30 or more inserts from them because Lyman no longer sells just the plugs. It's a 2 step die if you're not familiar. Been using them for decades and they work perfectly. They allow the bullet to sit perfectly straight in the case mouth and therefore they also seat perfectly straight into the case. I have a couple of the Lyman universal expander dies as well and they work very well and the same as the (M) and also allow you to use any standard thread powder measure on the press.

    • @man_1911
      @man_1911 2 года назад

      Hi Hercules, great information. I did a quick lookup, and looking at the overall design, I can see why they would be a great option. You get a caliber diameter specific die to expand the case neck and the case mouth. Nice. Thanks for watching and sharing!

    • @hercules1073
      @hercules1073 2 года назад

      @@man_1911 Yeah the second step in the expansion is what makes them so great because it allows the bullet to sit perfectly straight in the case and that's especially important with bottle necked cases or lead bullets in any case. Those dies really added to Lyman's fame way back then. All the other manufacturers have copied it nowadays just like all modern reloading dies work in the same stepped procedures as Lee dies whether they copied them internally or not. Just goes to show that if you come up with something great that works it will become the norm.

    • @MusicMinisterJP7
      @MusicMinisterJP7 9 месяцев назад

      A question: what does the (M) mean, that you mentioned regardingLee expander die? I ask because I am using an rcbs rock chucker and rcbs dies are just too expensive to keep buying. Now I seem to need a neck expander die and buying a Lee expander die seems more practical. However, I'm stuck with figuring which way to go,, Universal die or Powder thru expander die? And do I need to add some sort of stopper for the sliding flaring inner part?

    • @hercules1073
      @hercules1073 9 месяцев назад

      @@MusicMinisterJP7 If you don't have a LEE drum or auto-disk powder measure don't buy the powder through die because it doesn't work any better than any other standard expander. If you want (M) die function that you can change calibers on and that is affordable buy the LEE universal expander die and order caliber specific plugs from NOE for it in the sizes of your choice among calibers as well. What an (M) die does is first it expands the case the length of the bullet, the second step opens up the end of the case (perfectly round) to just slightly over bullet diameter so that when you place the bullet on the case it sits in it perfectly straight. The third step is optional and it adds a bit of flare in case you are using oversized bullets. The LEE universal expander alone is only a flaring die and not useful IMO, but adding cheap NOE inserts makes it into an caliber interchangeable Lyman (M) die and it works just as well...actually better because Lyman no longer offers custom sized plugs. OH BTW if you are using the RCBS uniflow or any other 7/8x14 tpi powder measure you can buy the Lyman universal powder through die. It's less than 50 bucks and will replace several dies. It comes with caliber specific (M) type powder through inserts for 32 through 45 calibers. They work exactly like the (M) except you can charge powder through them. They only offer a few accessory inserts (if they still do) but it does come with 32, 38a, 38p, 9mm, 40, 41, 44, 45 caliber inserts...I think thats all they come with, but it's a fantastic value for what it's capable of. You will not however be able to purchase oversized custom inserts for it should you ever need them. That's where the LEE universal and NOE inserts really shine.

I completely agree and for my Lee press I bought a 2 pack from midwayusa - www.midwayusa.com/product/1012849384?pid=971565. Now each of my dies are all setup in a separate bushing. Makes it really fast and easy. Thanks for watching!

    I love mine. The primer system I have is on the press. It is fast and easy on the hands. I use a Harley decamping tool. I never get any dirt or carbon near my press or dies. Being aluminum and having a steel ram isn’t going to hold up long term if you don’t. I also purchased a adapter for the quick trim die cutter. I now use a power screw driver on it.

    I've been really wanting a nice 22lr pistol so I can enjoy shooting on a more regular basis and I've had my eye on the Ruger SR 22, just haven't pulled the trigger yet. Is yours still performing well?

    probably the best review and showcase of how to attach the conversion. Only 1 complaint is at 4:15 I see you point to the release levers that are on each side but I dont see you pull them down, press them, or touch them for that matter. More clarity there and it would've been a perfect review

      I was lucky recently and found a local shop to have several boxes of 1000, limit one per customer. So I bought a box and then had my wife buy one also. Sad part is I paid $80, on the same box/amount I paid $35 a many years back. I used to be the one that was happy having a couple thousand in my stock, but after seeing over the past years the limits...I think I might up that to a lot more...

    Would you please tell me if your breech lock bushing can stay in the press tightly? I am asking this because mine doesn't stay tight. Seem like mine has a bit of "play" in both horizontally and vertically. The instruction of the Lee press says this: "After dies are set, they can be installed so the lock groove does not line up with the lock button, allowing you to install and remove die without depressing the lock button." When I tried this, I could eliminate the play in vertical movement, but this could not eliminate the play in horizontal movement. I am wondering if this is normal to have a bit of play or not. And if yours also has a bit of play, does this affect the accuracy of the reloaded rounds?

      Sorry for the late response, I was traveling for work. Interesting, I purchased the Lee Breech Lock Quick Change Bushings Package of 2, and they fit really snug in my single stage press.

      @@man_1911 Thanks for sharing your experience. Based on what you said, I can see there are good news and bad news. The good news is Lee Challenger Breech Lock single stage press can work. The bad news is that seem like my Lee Challenger Breech Lock single stage press is defective. Unfortunately, I bought it 6 years ago. I don't think I can return it. I will see if further tightening up the breech lock bushing can fix the problem (I doubt this). If not, I will have to get a new one and try again, and retire the old one for other use. Thanks again.

      @@captainjayc9217 sorry, I can't provide much help, just haven't seen that kind of issue before and never want to lead folks astray. I think you are on the right track to look at a newer model, since that play may affect the overall accuacy...I would think not by much and for plinking rounds may not be an issue; however, I do wish you the best of luck!
