What type of hooks do you like to use for your coonies for plunking steelhead?
@@allens3736 either a single 1/0 or single 2/0 owner cutting point pending the size of spin glo im running.
Hi Keith, do you have any videos on how to rig for plunking in rocky tribs??? I read your article on your website for plunking for winter steelhead thanks
Ah yeah, breakaways are common when plunking in tribs. So rather than a hot shot clip off the bottom of the set up holding it he fixed lead, adding a small breakaway 8lb or even 10lb breakaway. Assuming you’re plunking in regular river rock, I still just run pyramids as they’ll settle in. Is the area your fishing snaggy?
@ not really snaggy but I’ve only plunked in the Columbia using the cold water strong dual leader system. So I was just wondering what set up you would recommend for normal tributaries.
@ less is more for me. Lots of stuff out there a guy can do but I keep it simple, 6 bead chain with a small duo lock that connects in the middle of the bead chain and connects the swivel for the leader to attach to. I run two of those about 44” apart and run dual 38” leaders or so. Not precise in measurements but this allows the double setup. I had it displayed in one of my previous videos. But that set up with the right size pyramid does the job in sand and rock for me
@ thanks Keith

@Ultimateshrimpcure does the smaller qtr piece of line on the shank ever pull out?
@@colingreupner4392never has it pulled out over 1000’s of fish landed. Again, I’d say that initial piece I’m wrapping over with about 7-10 of the initial wraps on average.

Terrific video. Just curious if there are any significant difference in curing for salmon vs steelhead.
@@rodeoactionphotos Technique is the same, often the scents will change for salmon. I’ve found tuna oil from the can and pure anise oil to be two key ingredients to spring chinook and at times no scent in the fall.

From Spokane but targeting the Clearwater River.
@@rodeoactionphotos ah yes, I haven’t spent a ton of time with my recipe on the Clearwater. @@boblove6865 everywhere I’ve ever been in life a steelhead acts like a steelhead. I’ve certainly cut eggs straight out of a fish and caught one on the next cast using fresh. Have you tried the prawn chunks or steelhead candy on your fish there?
@ agreed a Steelhead acts like a Steelhead and I have fished for Steel from the Tongass to the SR in NY. I’ve never tried bait anywhere but the Great Lakes and in my 30 plus year’s experience cure has never made a difference. I will say confidence is everything and if it makes a guy confident then cure them eggs. All that said I cure my eggs for Kangs.
Good afternoon, Keith. I made my first of steelhead candy and it was great and very effective. Made my second batch and air dried and patted dry. When I tried this second batch it had acted like eggs and juiced up like eggs. Should I drain the juice or leave it.any advice is appreciated. Thanks
Good question, I never dry the steelhead candy. I see them as scent sponges so I keep them saturated in the jars and actually prefer even a little more scent than I used in the video.
Hi Keith, just had two questions. 1. Would squid powder work better for curing roe and shrimp instead of the procure oil? 2. Since squid oil works so well, have you ever experimented fishing squid chunks in the river? Was wondering if I should give this a try. Any info would be much appreciated. Thank you!
@@kennguyen9125 two great questions. Squid powder does work but there are very few options. Anglers Unlimited sells a squid powder. I still like the oil for the sake of dispersion. 2. I have tried squid chunks with minimal success, I do believe the oils are more important than the meat itself as it doesn’t give off much scent.
And a little raspberries jello’s for eggs
@@pnwprospecting yeah that one goes back almost 40 years, I remember my dad using that too.
What about vacuum sealing my skein?
@@BlakeBurrisoutdoors one would want to freeze the skein first before vacuum sealing it. My experience is if your vacuum sealing in plastic or a bag it would crush some of the berries. Vacuum sealing in a jar works too 👍

I am questioning the whole bait theory. We run eggs and yarnies and beads and they all produce about the same except yarnies are cheap and easy.
@@joebrenner4428 natural scents are a huge factor. As much as scent companies do it’s hard to replace the real thing. Artificial works for sure, but profile of a prawn chunk and their natural smells certainly draw strikes where artificial at times doesn’t. Just my .02
@Ultimateshrimpcure Sometimes but I do a lot of side drifting and when they are in there you can throw just about anything out there. The plain yarnies catch just as many as good eggs.
@@joebrenner4428 I think water temp plays a big part in that as well
@Ultimateshrimpcure Maybe.Guys on the Kenai swore by fresh cured and doctored up eggs.Like from the day before but I had some plain cured eggs that sat in the refrigerator all summer before I froze them and the following summer I swore they were the best eggs I have ever used and I started freezing all of them. The ice crystals pierce the membrane so they milk out faster which I think was the secret.
Do you have a recipe for salmon ?
@@RichSutherland-sl7dg personally, I’ll run the Ultimate Egg Cure on eggs first. These can be used on salmon but have not been thoroughly tested. If I did use them on salmon I’d add some anise and tuna oil from a bumblebee tuna can 👍
Hey Keith, you mentioned success on the great lakes. Do you know, are the great lakes guys using a similar recipe or maybe using a alewive oil instead? I'm 4hrs away and make 2 trips a year so I don't have the time to really test a bunch of different concoctions.
@@werejonesen1907 understood. I don’t have the exact specifics but can attest to procure squid oil being the most well rounded scent for Steelhead here, I’d go with that without question. Hey Keith, I’m a Centerpin fisherman and love single eggs in a spawn sac😄 I am seeking advice on how to or better yet how long is the curing process with single eggs😎 Sincerely Rick
@@RickMorrell-e1x Rick, you have a great Q. Out west we fish chunk baits so singles are a little different and I’ve never cured them. I’m confident if you followed the same cure process I do for chunk bait in the video you’d have quality single eggs in spawn sacs. Make sense?
Hey, thanks for your video. quick question. When fish eats cured egg, and after, people eats that fish down the road. Is there any part of those products bad for people eating those fish?
@@faqui1969 interesting question. The fish doesn’t ingest and digest the eggs before they’re harvested. So no, nothing would transfer to the meat of the fish.
@@Ultimateshrimpcurehey, thanks for your quick replay. Understand what you said. I'm brand new to salmon fishing but I notice there is a lot of cured eggs in the river after fail attempts to catch fish from many angles. So those eggs will be eaten by fish. So I'm asking you again are those products bad for people that will eat one of those fish eventually? No, I'm not talking about the ones that the fisherman will catch from his own eggs. I'm talking about other fish that are eating cured eggs, (I've even seen cured eggs in plastic containers left for good, right next to the river, when a small rain will put them in the water) from all other angles that can get their hooks set quick enough. Honest answer please.
@@faqui1969 can’t say I’ve thought that far down the line but most companies use salt, sugar and some companies use coloring to preserve the bait. Not exactly anything humans don’t already consume.
@@Ultimateshrimpcure thanks man. I was thinking about that today, when I was looking for a video to cure my own eggs and I saw a video of a guy really paying close attention to not get any of that stuff in his hands with gloves and mask. Thanks again for your info.

Glad you like them! Send pics of the results to the Ultimate Egg Cure Facebook page 👍
Is it okay to add the Krill powder to the cure? Thanks
I prefer to add extras at the time of fishing rather than in the curing process, if your 100% confident the species targeted will want the ingredient your adding then yes you could. But you can’t take it back out if you choose to do so. Make sense?
I butterfly my eggs with a butter knife. The tiny dull serrations cut between the eggs without popping the berries themselves. Learned that from Glenn on an old episode of Hawg Quest.
