It's not a matter of the whole state being rural, the west is well-settled, the east is practically empty, (Garfield County is bigger than Connecticut and only has 1,200 people). 346,614 (2024), the population of Missoula County and all counties it borders, = 45 people per square mile in Western Montana. This makes it the 22nd densest state counting just the western third, greater than Oregon, Utah, Kansas, Nevada, etc... Montana is so big any one generalization made about the state will always be incorrect, you should do videos on the different regions of Montana (Glacier, Missouri River, Central, Southeast, Southwest and Yellowstone. It's like 6 states in one. I think it's safe to say Glacier is analogous to Washington State, Missouri River is like Southern Canada, Southeast is like Nebraska, Southwest is like the old west, Central is the rural yet unique area, and Yellowstone is like Northern California. Ranching in Glacier Country isn't really a thing, nor is the extremely harsh weather. Western Montana does have major city access via Spokane (metro=800,000+). Eastern Montana has seen major growth in the oil industry and sits on top of 1/3 of all coal in the USA. Central Montana controls the hub of the USA's ground-based nuclear deterrent with hundreds of ICBM's ready to go, and is also where the T-Rex, Stegosaurus, Triceratops, Brontosaurus and many many more dinosaur fossils are continuing to be discovered. Yellowstone Country is one of the fastest growing regions in the whole USA. I have to disagree about medical access and public education as well, Western Montana has these resources in abundance, and they are top-notch quality. Billings has a level 1 trauma center which services not just Montana, but the Dakotas and much of Wyoming. Montana is the highest ranked state in the country for physicians, Missoula has one of only 11 CDC preparedness centers to treat severe and catastrophic disease outbreaks such as ebola. Missoula has always been known as a culturally unique and significant city in that regard, it has 14 museums as well as performing arts like the Missoula Children's Choir, who perform all over the globe. Bozeman has a world-class dinosaur museum. Billings has a well-rounded economy that weathers all economic downturns better than most cities in the country. Bozeman's having an explosion in the tech industry. You can find any form of exotic foreign foods of excellent quality in Billings, Bozeman and Missoula. Growth... Bozeman has been named by the US Census Bureau as the fastest growing city in the country. Post-covid, Montana is the 3rd fastest growing state nationally. Kalispell is America's fastest growing "cold- weather" city as well as America's fastest growing "micropolitan" area. Montana added a legislative seat after the last census while states like California and New York lost seats. Recreation.... some of the best world-class ski resorts in existence, white-water rafting, fishing, hunting, camping, riding, boating, sailing, snowmobiling, wildlife safari, hiking, hot springs, ziplining, horseback riding, golf, Glacier National Park, Yellowstone National Park, etc.... . Western Montana has a good number of First Nations residents. Highway 93, the busiest in the state, has bi-lingual road signs in both English and Salish languages. Concerts, how about Rolling Stones, Pearl Jam, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Vans Warped Tour, all of which had over 20,000 attendees. Not record-breaking, but not insignificant. The vibes I get from this video sound like you're describing Miles City and projecting that on to the whole state. Sorry, didn't mean to rant, but the generalizations are pretty strong imho, I've lived all over the USA as well as all over Montana. The "rural" focus is only a small piece to a bigger and more interesting story that is Montana.
