This is a great idea that is in place in some places. But I found that most mentors consider this extra work. Even if the mentor is promised some monetary compensation, I find that mentoring is at the bottom of their priorities. The mentor wants to get their own work done. How would a company handle this issue with mentoring?

Hi! Great comment and question. Mentorship needs to be available throughout the entire organization from top down. That means, leaders need to participate as well, whether they are a mentor or being mentored...or both. They need to be the example and show and talk about the two-way benefits. It is a learning and growing opportunity for both the mentor and the mentee. Mentorship also doesn't take as much time as many would think. It's not time intensive as a job coach, it's more like a professional guide who is available when needed. Mentoring also doesn't have to impede someone's work schedule. It can take place at lunchtime, where the two go out, chat, and give/receive guidance. It can also take place via email or quick online or in person check-ins. Mentoring needs to be seen as a win-win, as the mentor is gaining leadership skills...AND they can put it on their resume. Plus, the team the mentee is on becomes more efficient and the mentee gains confidence and skills. Let me know if you have any other questions or need more clarification. Thank you for your comment!

Great post and tip. I think it's also worth noting that after the stresses a veteran often faces in challenging, deployed environments, a civilian workplace can seem relatively easier. I believe veterans will tend to be more loyal, much like people with disabilities, when offered meaningful employment. The greatest gift an employer can give a veteran is a safe environment to transition from the military to the civilian world. Follow Matthew Kelly's The Dream Manager approach and help them through the transition even if that means they subsequently leave. You'll still have an advocate for life.

Thank you for your insightful comments and for your suggestion about following Matthew Kelly's The Dream Manager approach. I agree with you, the best thing an employer can do is make sure a veteran has the support they need to make a safe and successful transition from military to civilian employment. It is a very different environment and many veterans will need help with adjusting to the differences.
