Catching pre-spawn smallmouth bass in one of the top rated destinations to catch em did not disappoint. I could not believe the volume of fish and the size of them! We weren't even weighing 4 pounders.

I must have found the spot on the spot because the action was non-stop for about an hour to an hour and a half. Lots of ups and downs to start with a surprise twist in the middle. Catching them through the ice sure is unique and helps scratch the itch that winter in the north makes unbearable at times.
Big Smallmouth Bass on Butternut Lake

I've always heard great things about Butternut Lake and I finally made it there. 3rd cast in and I hooked into a respectable smallie. She fought like a banshee and even pulled the boat! She was the only one I hooked into that day, but for never fishing this lake before I hooked into the right one!

Water temp was in the low 50's so I knew it was time to bust out ol Harry Stiles. I've never fished this lake this time of year before so I figured we'd start shallow and go from there. We caught 11 total smallmouth 8 of which were 17" with the biggest one being 19.75" and 5.1lbs!

Wasn't having much luck on the whopper plopper so I decided to try my luck in deeper water. Water temps are at their peak in the month of July in Wisconsin and although I'd rather catch them shallow that simply was not an option. Fishing is all about adapting to the current situation. I you don't you'l drive yourself mad. Luckily, it paid off at this particular time.

After 2 months of boat building Matt and I finally got out on the water together. He did research on some local lakes and found a gem. We'll be back to check in on our brown friends and hopefully meet some of the big green ones we saw too.

I was excited to potentially catch a big bass through the ice, but we stumbled upon a decent bluegill bite. We were astonished each time one came through the hole. These were some of the biggest bluegills I had ever seen!

Saugatuck is great for smallies, the whole Kalamazoo really. If we get a steady east wind they pile up by the piers and it’s unbelievable fishing.

I have been hearing they have been deeper lately wonder why. Nice to see you were able to get some!
This was back in July when water temps were pretty high. Smallmouth usually move to deeper water where it's cooler. I was marking fish anywhere from 18-32ft of water on the wind blown side of the lake. Not sure what's going on up there this time of year, but at some point in the fall they move to deep water where they'll spend their winter. Read an article recently that 90% of the fish will be in 10% of the lake so if you find em you're in for a heck of a day!

@@bowmadman9562 Dude, that's awesome. I gotta get back there. That system has everything swimming in it. I caught a couple small catfish and drum on ned rigs. Not knowing what you're gonna hook into spices things up a bit. Any size to the smallies?
@@WetLineWilly I caught 2 that were in the pound and a half range about 16 inches. I had one real nice one come off before I could land it.
