Varlsbeyn Mood Sketches
Been a while all! Enjoy this timelpase of my digital art process for creating environment thumbnails. This is my main character's birthplace, Varlsbeyn, mostly looking at the environment and a couple of the landmarks around it, rather than the town itself. Most of the sketches were done in about 3-4 hours.

Cara - The White Series - Gouache Painting
Просмотров 4822 года назад
After doing a stylised series of pencil sketches of my Gilda ladies from my Whaler Girl project (check out the link below) I really wanted to paint them up too, as smaller gouache paintings. I thought it'd be useful to do a little annotation with the process, so please let me know in the comments if that helps. Apologies if the video is a little wobbly, I'm using a pretty basic set up at the mo...

Exploring a redesign of my character Ayomi - one of the Gilda from The Whaler Girl - think of them like a group of powerful women who've banded together under the tyrannical rule of the King of the Pirates. Ayomi hails from the Fyre islands and is on her own personal search for clues as to the whereabouts of a long lost god. I thought it'd be useful to do a little annotation with these designs,...

Enjoy a fully rendered character design for my courtesan, Rosa, who is part of my project, The Whaler Girl. Rosa's a party-loving socialite with some nifty skills, including contortionism and the ability to superheat metals, which is why she usually has some form of metal about her at all times. Favours the emblem of the dragonfly and loves carnations. Find more of my work at: www.artofsamhogg....

Some more exploration for one of the main locations of my Whaler Girl project, this time in colour! Ravahn is the main destination for those who have something to trade, with no questions asked, as long as you have the right coin. watched while doing my own, keep it up
I love that, glad I was good background noise :)
@@SamHogg I learned too
Wow you've been busy, so would you say this project started 10 years ago with the creation of Eideann? I really like how it's developing, the desaturated look and you seemed to have done so much work already looking at the website. I'm endevouring to create my own world too and ironically mine is also about the sea (I love water) so it is good to see how you have approached yours and the amount of time given to it. If you don't mind me saying the only niggle I had was the text in the speech bubble went a bit too quick so I stopped to video to read it fully. Looking forward to more.
Thanks! And yeah I did worry the text might be a bit short, next time I might see if I can leave it on screen a bit longer. And yes, project started probably even longer ago than 10 years but started with the creation of the character and has been through a fair few iterations over the years.
Nice job Sam
Nice to see your work again. This is such a lovely piece.
Thank you!
These are wonderful! I love your work and it was exciting to see a video from you pop up!
Thanks for this video! I appreciate your craft, your taste and skill! By the way even your text additions on the video are tastefully done in the image. It's very high quality stuff!
Thank you! I'm working up confidence to do proper narration, so it's great to hear the info is useful and not distracting..
@@SamHogg the text give more additional info (logically, I know ) but also did it tastefully
Glad to see your videos again! :D
Thank you, hoping to do more of them!
Where do you usually find Dungeons and Dragons commissions?
So cool! In which size do you make this type of details? thank you
this is so helpful, i love everything you have going so far over the past few years - clothes are intimidating for me but watching this helps me to try for my own designs ♡
This is such an interesting video to watch and I really like your observations on the right. It helps us understand your train of thoughts and as a wannabe concept artist, it really gives me important advice to create rich and clear concepts. Thank you for sharing this with us. You're super talented and I wish you the best of success in your amazing work.
It's really beautiful!
Thanks!
Really loved watching this! The process explainers throughout were great. Brb.... I'm off to get some gouache paints now! 😊
Hope you enjoy, Lou!
nice sam

Outstanding
I love this... The lighting is outstanding... I can tell the characters right away... Thanks for posting. (Sorry for commenting over two years later...)
is it common in the industry to draw small heads? or is it a style thing
That's a style thing for me for the most part (long ingrained bad habit of small heads and long legs!). I do know the industry tends towards 'heroic' proportioned humans as you want them characters the audience plays to feel more 'aspirational', so around 8 heads tall, vs the 7 heads for your 'average' human.
@@SamHogg i see, thank you for the input, Sam!
Incredible! Wowww
Fantastic work! You absolutely killed it
I can just imagine the medieval monks cutting some serious shapes to this banger while transcribing away in the monastery. Brother Athanasios is mad for the illuminated lettering, MAD FOR IT! :-) All joking aside lovely work well done.
You know those monks were all about the manic EDM. :D Thank you!
This channel is very underrated! You can clearly see all the skill and care that went into this. I love how cohesive all of the designs look, it's very inspiring! Makes you wanna know more about the story and culture behind it. The small details on the sashes, the varied headdresses, and the different silhouettes all sell it! I look forward to seeing more from you! :)
Thanks JJ, I really appreciate that!
he looks like a mischievous sweetheart!
Thanks so much for sharing your process on this, with comments and all! Its great to hear about the points on reference too. Fantastic artwork as always! I've come away feeling inspired ^_^
I'm glad the comments help, it's high praise to inspire someone else :)
lovely
Thanks!
Thank you for sharing this process! I forget the importance of reference all the time
Thanks Harrison, glad you enjoyed the extra notes!
Sam, you're an amazing inspiration and great inspiration source! Thank you for this video process
Thank you! I hope the vid with the extra comments was useful :)
@@SamHogg Yeah, it's like hearing a lecture based on a real project
this was so mesmerizing to watch!!
If I got a commission work how much should। I charge for one character design
Don't go off of number of characters or sketch or lineart or background. Charge a base price based on your quality plus hourly for your time. for instance when I do commissions I have a base price of $25 then from there I charge hourly for the projected time, always overestimate a little so you know for sure you wont come up short. I did a commission earlier this week that I though would take me around 3 and a half hours so I charged 4 hours plus the base charge. As you get better and see your quality improving you can start to charge more, there are way to many variables with art to have a consistent price sheet, it should always be based on how much time + the base charge. And always get full payment up front, some people do half now half on delivery but honestly its too much hassle, if someone really wants to fight you on it I would say move on, if you have a record of commission work there shouldn't be any reason to distrust you. Hope this helped!
Amazing, can’t wait for asoiaf calendar. That Vhagar vs Arrax art is memorable
Oh my god!!! May god bless you. You're a gem of an artist. ❤🔥
So cool to watch process of your work, thank you
d&d art is something i love so much, and seeing this made me love it even more. <3
I fully approve of the annotations. They were both informative and entertaining. Thanks for sharing the process of this one coming to life.
One guy just really wants a drink and to move a seat XD
This is absolutely wonderful, I hope you do alot more speed paint commissions in the future because we get to see how other people's team is formed and you draw them so beautifully
This was a fun video to watch. :) The painting is beautiful, and it has a mythological feel to it. Your annotations were a nice touch and funny.
very cool and impressive! Hope youll enjoymy page as much as I enjoyed yours!
Прекрасно!
Amazing piece of work, disturbed by horrible Music!
Ha, thanks, open to suggestions for better music for youtube vids :)
damn! thats the best art and talent for someone with 1k subs! i hope u grow
That's incredibly kind of you, thank you!
How much do your commissions cost, and what payment methods do you prefer for a large one?
Hey, thanks for asking! I'm currently not taking on any commission work for the foreseeable future. If and when I do open up, commissions are all individually costed depending on a number of varying factors.
@@SamHogg do you have anyone who you could recommend? Thank you for the reply.
@@justdoinmything You could check out this thread on twitter: twitter.com/ToddKenreck/status/1249757575408574465 , try that or the #visiblewomen or #portfolioday tags there too, should fill your timeline with loads of artists!
How I wish you had recordings of all the neat concepts you did leading up to this too! They were just fabulous. Always fun to see how your characters come to life in the painting phase! I kinda want a tshirt of the pattern you made for her pants. It's so pretty just on is own!
Thanks Ang! I might try to record these whenever I do them from here on. Handy to have regardless! And tbh I could go into the patterning a little more, but fabric designs might be another idea to put on the back burner!
Wow, this is so insanely good! How long did it actually take from start to finish?
If you play it in 0.25x speed it looks very sped up, so I'd guess normal speed would be somewhere around 0.5x which would mean it took 10 hours. But I think normal speed is actually even less, it was probably somewhere around 30 hours.
Impressive as always! Curious about the brush you used in the beggining, really looks like true watercolor. Is it your own?
I have had that brush for I can't recall how long! I am pretty sure it was part of a brushset from the Digital Brushes Tumblr (digitalbrushes.tumblr.com/) but damned if I can recall which one. It does have some repetitive elements but it works well with varying pressure.
Amazing!
Thank you!
Wacky fact, Dragonborn don’t have tails. Half dragons do though
Oh yeah, I know. In my DM’s homebrew world, dragonborn do have tails, though. And they’re prideful of their tails the way humans are prideful of their penises. And mine is a pretty good tail. Considering I ended up with a one inch penis, I’m taking that.
xTwilightWolvesx ah
Your work is really awesome....but I feel I need to pause the video and drop some "E" to get into the full spirit of the music...lol. Sorry, I've been watching too many RUclips videos lately. I'm being inundated with musak el electronica. Anyway... I'm going to be taking some metal engraving training and I'm sick to death with watching western and English scroll work videos. Calligraphy and illuminated texts have always fascinated me. I think this would fit right in with engraving. Thanks for the videos... Great stuff man. Wait...! gotta go. The drop is about to happen, and I need some water. You can never be too careful, right? ...😉
Haha, apologies for the extra electronica in your feed :) Appreciate the kind words though! Engraving's a whole nother ballgame, I admire anyone with the skills to pull that off!
Beautiful work. Seriously some of my favorite ever. Curious, as an aspiring artist myself, how long are most of the videos you post in real-time? Aka, how long does it take you to complete a piece from start to finish?
Thank you! I don't seem to have the original video files for this one, but as a decent estimate, this one was probably in the 8 - 10 hour mark in total. The prep work for it was probably another day (sketching, colour roughs etc) Larger paintings might take 16-24 hours (2-3 working days) with a day or two of prep and some of my most complicated oil paintings (I have no examples of those here at the moment, but working on it!) might be as much as two solid weeks or more painting, and up to a week of prep.
@@SamHogg Thank you, Sam! And congrats on the Song of Fire and Ice Calendar and Whaler Girl. Your work is an inspiration. Keep kicking butt!
The butt/boob pose of the ranger is appreciated
I'm all for pose equality with dragonborn :)
