Tucson Meet Yourself is a folklife festival. We present artists and communities that carry on living traditions rooted in a group’s own definition of identity, artistry, and cultural significance. It was founded in 1974 by University of Arizona folklorist and anthropologist Dr. James “Big Jim” Griffith, honored by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2011 as a “National Heritage” treasure.
TMY is the signature annual event of the Southwest Folklife Alliance, which helps support, honor, and promote the traditional arts and heritage practices of the region and that compliment the festival year-round. TMY is building a community that respects traditions, culture, diversity and honors the land and environment (“sense of place”) unique to the desert borderlands through ongoing partnerships with organizations in our region dedicated to fostering compassion, integrity, and stewardship of the land and our Southwestern cultural ways.

Chamamé and Waila Accordions Meet
Argentina and Brazil traditional Guarani-origin music of Chamame met Tohono O’odham Waila at San Xavier. Two master artists of each form, Alejandro Britten and Gertie Lopez, rehearsing for their musical encounter where they alongside UA ethnomusicologist Jennie Gubner, highlight points of connection between two musical traditions that share the accordion. Both waila and chamame emerge from the multicultural hybridization of Indigenous and settler sonic traditions, but are characterized by unique sounds and methods and distinctive social dance styles.
Catch this encuentro at TMY Saturday, October 5, 2024 from 8-10pm at the Church Stage.

They Fried It, I tried It - Cultural Soul Food at Tucson Meet Yourself by Adiba Nelson One thing about me is that I love to eat. More importantly, I love to eat cultural “soul food.” There is something incredibly divine and almost church-like about partaking in a meal that is rich in culture or harkens back to the chef’s’ childhood. It feels like a secret you’ve been made privy to or a privileg...

I don't speak these languages, and thus I can't remember which song is what, but I recognize some of them from the album The Heartbeat Of Mother Earth, featuring Ken Duncan, David Brush, and James Peshlakai. I'm trying to find more of David's music, and Ken's music. They're both apart of this dance and song group.
Thank you

Tom, you are amazing brother. It was my pleasure to meet you in Arizona. I’m still in awe that it happened. I found you on the internet here in Massachusetts. I was on a business trip in Arizona and just happened to stop into a music store to buy a harmonica and found out you were playing in a local restaurant that night. What an awesome memory! Keep on blowing!

I am son of the nation who has not grown up in the traditions. Many elders have passed in my family and I was too young to grasp the importance of their stories. Thank you for your contribution and education. I would love to see a few meals in the preparation process along with a description of flavors and comparisons. I love what you’re doing keep up the great work!!

Paper flowers believed to be originated in China made it's way in the 17th century from Manila in the Philippines to Mexico, used to decorate weddings and other fiestas.. That's how it became part of our Haiki culture and tradition.. this is so amazing how other cultures art is used and brought out to our people..
I stopped by for the food. But those ladies are gracious and beautiful. Thank you.

Thank you so much ladies for putting this video together. I am part of the Tohono O'odham nation. However, I did not get the opportunity to grow up in or around the nation so a lot of the traditions have not been shown to me. So having people like you all putting together videos about our people truly helps keep our culture and traditions alive. Keep doing what you're doing! I greatly appreciate the information on our people. BTW homegirl in the middle I love your face tats! Unique (:
I’m grateful to learn from this video! I’m Pascua Yaqui but know little about the Pascua Yaqui culture. I’ve been reading and doing research to learn and feel connected. I also love flowers, so this is awesome ❤️ Thank you for teaching me!!
