Received the machine on 5.7.24. This machine came from the same appliance shop as my original 2002 Kenmore Elite & 2002 Kenmore Elite in almond with the matching dryer. Every thing looks great. I am currently in the process of trying to keep the lid switch permanently bypassed and adding an auxiliary switch. Hopefully I am able to do that. Model: GSX9885JQO Serial: CM0438370

GARBAGE !
I have no power
??? I’m sorry I have no advice for you. This is not my washing machine nor do I have any expertise on it.
(Request) could you do the largest load of whites you could possibly do?) *hot water catalyst function (think it’s only on Kenmore) and if you can fabric softener*
I don’t think the catalyst sprays hot water.
Why the agitator softener dispenser? It's not needed with the triple dispenser, and isn't original/stock configuration.
I know. I just like the way it looks.
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Agreed. It looks nice.
@@crazywarp36 But he is right, it was not original to the machine
could you do whatever the shortest cycle possible with this machine is? I don't really care what load you use but just regular clothes would be great.:)
Yes just remind me
Can you do a medium small load on whitest white cycle if you do thanks.
Absolutely.
Is this a 2001? Obviously that's when Whirlpool & Kenmore launched the catalyst machines. Or is this a different year?
This machine was built in 2002.
Hello sir could you get the 96 back up and going and do a overload cycle and fast fast and do the longest wash cycle with extra rinse on please and thank you on warm water thank u😅
I did not mean to put the emoji
I usually frown on overloaded cycles because they put a tremendous strain on the motor, transmission, and coupler. If you look at the towel video I just did on my Catalyst, that's about as full as I'll go. I have invested too much money in restoring these machines. If that is ok, I will most definitely honor your request. I'll be using the Catalyst for a few more weeks before I swap out the 96 machine.
Thanks for my request!
No problem. :)
Two requests: 1) Video of the same items, same cycle (catalyst not necessary) at the 2nd water level. 2) And again at Small.
No problem. Just remind me.
Still outstanding rollover action even on low speed!
Very nice wash cycle. Although with the slow spin speed, the extended spin doesn't make much of a difference.
Not really
I love those automatic dispensers. Another great wash and I bet those sheets and pillow cases smelled wonderful after the gain detergent and fabric softener. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Gain is one of the very good stuff to use! Not gonna lie, whenever you add both the detergent and fabric softener right up at the camera, it's like very satisfying. No joke at all!
The Catalyst was probably one of my less-favorite machines because I felt they were too complex for my liking. That said, Whirlpool's direct drive was one of THE best washers ever made.
I could actually understand that. After opening it up, it definitely has a lot going on. Fortunately this machine is in really good shape. Thanks for watching 👍
@@MatthewJames-st5wv When time permits, if you haven't already, could you do a full size wash with Warm/Warm (no AccuWash)? Catalyst option up to ya.
@@Sharkie626 Hey there, Sharkie. Absolutely. Do you just want to see everyday clothes?
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Sure! Normal every day clothing is usually best for that temperature option.
@@Sharkie626 Np. I always use warm or hot regardless of what the stupid fabric label says.
Is the extra delicate cycle with catalyst and microfibre towels next?
I thought I already did the extra slow cycle?
@@MatthewJames-st5wv I wanted to see it again with microfibre towels but with less wash time and with the soak option off
@@pony7124 Oh ok. I’ll do something this week
I might get to this today. What exactly did you want to see again?
@@MatthewJames-st5wv extra delicate on normal soil with catalyst on, soak option off, with a smallish load of microfibre towels
Nice! Took that XL load of towels like a boss. That kind of load in a newer HE junk machine would burn out thier motors or strip their gears
Sure would. Then someone would have to go out and buy another piece of junk, which is exactly what they want.
Really nice Washer fully featured.
Looks like a fun washer Matt. I know you're enjoying it. Have a great memorial weekend! ! God bless !
You too , Pat. God bless.
I'm loving this washer. I'm adding this washer to my "Eric's Favorite Washers List"
My Kenmore Catalyst washer was just like this one except mine had 2 spin sprays in the wash spin and 2 spin sprays in the rinse spin... How I miss that washer, It really did a great job on everything... Thanks for the video Matt and have a great memorial day weekend... Bob
Yeah the Kenmore version had the ultra rinse system. This doesn’t have that. In comparison the Kenmore version doesn’t give the option to do the extended spin which this has. I guess everything was aimed at sales tactics.
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Now see I would have loved to have the extended spin because I did a lot of heavy loads of jeans and towels and that would have spun out more water for faster drying time in the dryer... Oh well I guess you can't have everything... 🤔🤔🤔
The tub did a Flintstone twitch while stopping
Yeah I have noticed this with these Catalyst machines.
My favorite detergent
The Gain Island Fresh scent is excellent. Sadly its becoming increasingly hard to find. Gain has already discontinued the fireworks, softener, and dryer sheets.
Excellent wash action and I love how quiet this machine is!
Thanks man.
Beutiful wirpool gold machine matt! I also like the kenmore and wirlpool calypso washers too. Do u think you could find one to add to your collection?
I’m not sure about the Calyspo. I rather stick to my direct drives.
@@MatthewJames-st5wv :). Ok. ❤️
Another great video, Matt! I’m sure you already know, but the “Normal” cycle on these is the only cycle that uses all three agitation speeds, depending on water level. extra small, and small, are low speed, medium is medium speed, and the. the large and extra large load settings start with a few minutes of high speed agitation to get clothes moving, before stepping down to low speed. one thing that I like that the whirlpool version here has, is a much more specific status readout compared to the Kenmore version.
Hey Henry. Yea I saw that in AW. Do you have the sound absorber you can sell me?
@@MatthewJames-st5wv I was able to find it this last weekend. It’s in pretty rough shape, but I may be able to still send it. I also took some pictures of measurements on it, if you’d like to try and make your own as well.
@@DrummerboysWashersAndMore Could you send me some photos when you get a chance?
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Of course. I will send you an email as soon as I can.
awsome washer your agitator is going to be shipped soon
Water temp?
It’s about 135 F
Aiwa was one of the best brand producing such system
What's the capacity of that washer.
I think 3.2 cubic feet
Could you do this same cycle again but with colorful microfibre towels to show agitation and with no soak and normal soil (leave the catalyst option on as well)
if it's not super delicate, then I prefer the fast spin.
Also, the drain cycle on the delicate/extra delicate cycle is always quieter for some reason.
That’s pretty much every direct drive when the first cycle of the day you do is on slow or extra slow agitation
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Or on the delicate cycle.
I like how the lowest water level setting is not super low so that it doesn't splash water all over the place.
I raised it about half an inch when I adjusted the water pressure switch.
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Good move!!!
I have to say that this machine is a lot better than the other machines you had! I still like your other machines as well!
Well yeah, it’s TOL with a special cleaning agent.
So what exactly is the Catalyst function?
It mixes the detergent with some water using creating a sudsy spray that pretreats your clothes before the actual wash. Its very effective.
if only thees were still being made today but with all the features that washers and dryers are required to have thees days. Also, do you plan on finding a matching dryer to go with it?
I’m currently on a mission to find the matching dryer
that will be a hard mission for sure. Finding a catalyst washer is hard enough.
I always put the scented beads in the detergent dispenser so they get pumped out during the drain as they sometimes don't dissolve.
The wash action of these Whirlpool/Kenmore DD's is 2nd to none!!!
Agreed. I love it.
This is definitely a top of the line 80 series. I used to have one years ago, but it didn’t have the sliding water level selector and it didn’t have extra rinse. And if I remember correctly, handwash casual was called extra delicate extra slow or something like that. It worked great, until one day when it broke. This is the washer that brought me to your channel.
This was my very first direct drive. I really regret getting rid of it, but love what I have now. Thanks for watching.
I hope the new owners take great care of it. They probably bought it because they bought an HE washing machine, hated it, and wanted to find something old school to replace it. All of your current machines run just like new.
@@randomchannel2268 Dude that bought it was cool and respected it for hats it is
Do you have any recommendations on how to find one of these? I’ve scoured eBay and Facebook marketplace and can’t find anything😭
They’re extremely rare. I got very lucky and didn’t intend to purchase this but couldn’t let it slip by, especially considering the condition it was in. I’m sorry.
The agitation speed is dependent on the water level selected. That's why there was low speed agitation on this cycle.
Yes
Nice machine Matt. So you can't override the speed when set for low water use ? Interesting. That's why I don't think electronic controls will ever be as versatile as a fully loaded mechanically controlled washer.
@@patcola7335 No, but it’s still pretty versatile. It won’t do heavy dusty fast fast unless you select at least medium water level. I need to adjust the pressure switch because low water level is a tad too high
Is the machine level, I saw a lot of shaking.
Of course it’s level. It’s my flooring in there. It’s not structurally sound
Did it automatically do the second rinse on that cycle or did you program it to do a second rinse?
Nice machine.
I don't care what anyone says, these were still great washers!!! Thanks for the video Matt and have a good night... Bob
The best out there, hands down!!! 😁
Could you do the extra delicate cycle on this machine?
Yeah that’s next
@@MatthewJames-st5wv okay thank you!
That's really cool the way the bleach dispenser works, first time I've seen that. Love this machine.
Thanks man. My 2002 Kenmore has the same thing just minus catalyst.
You know, I've re-habituated myself to the sound of the VMW machine that I have. Then I watch one of these videos and I'm like holy sh*t, I forgot how much smoother these DD's sounded in comparison. I actually think the DD's are probably objectively louder, but they're easier on the ears than the VMW's, because the motors on the DD's run continuously and don't pulse over and over. Not sure if that makes sense.
Agreed. Only thing is not all DD’s sound the same. This machine sounds perfect.
@@MatthewJames-st5wv I know exactly what you mean. Every single DD I've ever heard in my life sounds just a bit different from one another. I saw in another comment, you stated that your '96 machines sounds clunky compared to this. I'll have to go back and see if I notice. I will say that the only thing that would make this machine sound absolutely perfect would be an old-style drain pump, but maybe they don't work with the catalyst.
@@rynerobinson903 It should work fine. The 96 machine seems to have a noisy motor.
The pause you mention in a partial-drain cool down is related to a mechanical timer running-out the remainder of the two-minute drain increment after the pressure switch resets. An electronic model doesn't have a mechanical timer with fixed increments, thus no need for the pause. You may also notice that this machine has (should have) variable-length drain periods per the fill level.
Very good to know. What is the noise at 36:12?
@@MatthewJames-st5wv Motor shift from ex low speed to low speed for stepped-spin on Perm Press. A few other Whirlpool models had stepped spin. The pattern varies. I have a GSQ9669 which starts PP spin at low, then shifts to high. KitchenAid also did in the 1990s, maybe a bit earlier and longer. PP on my 1990 KA runs two mins at each of the three speeds on the final spin. Regular runs two mins of low, four mins of high. A 1994 KA my mother had followed the same pattern.
@@DADoESofTX Very interesting
@@DADoESofTX Is there any cycle that just does an extra low spin instead of the usual low?
