In this video we crack open this 15 year old part and see how much metal has accumulated over the mileage of the vehicle. While Honda does not call out this part as a serviceable item, we replaced it a Magnefine 3/8" inline transmission filter from NAPA which fits well in the existing bracket in front of the radiator. You can also go with OEM Honda replacement part No. 25430-PLR-003.

At the end when you point out that "some people say you can remove this shield", you are actually looking at the bracket that holds the heat shield which was already previously removed. The two empty holes hold bolts that hold a heat shield.

as long as your oil meets the current API service requirement and meets the specifications of your manufacturer, the brand doesn’t matter. I just like name brand oils because they’re familiar to me but if it has the API donut and your car’s manufacturer’s certification on the back, it’s perfectly fine. kirkland oil is blended by the same company that makes walmart super tech which is also an API certified oil.

Not on the oil change topic but question. I have a 2020 highlander XL. IT AS BEEN EXCELLERATING WHEN IT'S COLD . IT DOES IT INTERMEDIATELY. TOYOTA A ND THE DEALERSHIPS SAY " CAN'T DUPLICATE ". THEY HAD IT FOR 21 DAYS ONE OCCASION. THEY THINK WE ARE STUPID AND WILL GO AWAY. IT STARED DOING THIS LAST JANUARY. I HAD THE BREAK NAILED TO THE FLOOR AND IT PUSHED ME THRU 4 STOP SIGN INTERSECTIONS AND TRU A RED LIGHT ONTO A MAJOR HIGHWAY . I DOCUMENTED TIMES, LOCATIONS AND WEATHER. IM A RETIRED POLICE OFFICER OF 22 YEARS AND FIRE FIGHTER EMT OF 5. All they wanted to know was anyone hurt or killed . I was trained to know what to do. PUT YOUR CAR INTO NEUTRAL ! Once the engine reves up to 7,000 rpm the engine/ throttle will reset . This year it STARED again. My warranty is expired I've just turned 35,000. It started when I had 21,000 miles. I've spoken to 5 others who had this issue and they got the same responses from TOYOTA U.S.A. and the dealerships. Lastly on my menu that tells you maintenance required. Warned me that maintenance was needed. It stated transmission and throttle problem. I showed the 2 dealerships I took the vehicle to . They told me to disregard those maintenance ⚠️. It was suggested that I had my foot on the accelerator, I was power beaking or I had my gas cap off. IDIOTS. TILL SOMEONE IS KILLED OR SERIOUS HURT . IT'LL BE IGNORED. I CALLED THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRANSPORT SAFETY BOARD and no help. One dealerships suggested I trade it in ! IDIOTS. I ask highlander owners of 2020 to 2022 if they had this happen to them. One person said her son is a service manager. He changed the electronic excelleration module a $695.00 part. So be warned and safe.

Thank you for the Tutorial Video. A question: which is then the best practice after refilling final drive fluid, in order to better set the differential working correctly? Like, a smooth ride on a large square with full right/left steering, in order to set diff to work? Or, for instance, putting car on a full Jack suspended mid-air, then smooth accelerating and finally, without acceleration, stationary brake in order to put a slight torque to rear diff? Or, nothing? Thank you for answer

    • @cartips3198

Yes, we just wanted to show the technique while we had the video rolling. It usually takes a while for the oil to drain down and give an accurate reading anyway. By all means double check the level one more time after the vehicle has sat on level ground for a few hours.

I just changed the transmission fluid in our 2007 CR-V with about 215,000 miles. My sister bought the car new and sold it to me about 7 years ago. She could not remember if the fluid had ever been changed or flushed so I figured it hadn’t been. I usually remove the fluid pan but didn’t on this one because it had an outside filter and magnet is on the drain plug. I drained 3.4 quarts(3.22 liters) and replaced with new fluid. I also replaced the filter on this video with factory filter. I risked that the transmission might start slipping but after weeks of driving it hasn’t. Drained with car cold and replacement fluid at same ambient temperature. I wondered how dirty the filter could be and if it might be blocking flow. I was happy to see someone had cut it to see inside. Thanks

Great video. I have a 2016 Highlander I’ve change the oil on it many times. Couple of recommendations. Keep the plastic drain attached to the housing while you’re loosening the main housing. You’ll find that more oil comes out as you unscrew the housing. I also bought another filter at one point I forget which brand but it had a screw on attachment instead of that push on that the Toyota filter comes with. I actually keep it and reuse it it’s actually very nice. Costco oil is great I use the same stuff. I also have marked an old orange juice plastic container with the additional amount above and beyond the 5 quart jug. That way I know the exact amount I want to fill up every time very easily. I have the same problem seeing where the mark is with new oil it’s almost impossible. Therefore with this orange juice can technique I don’t even really look at the quantity. Just got done taking the transmission pan and cleaning the magnets just yesterday. 90,000 miles and it’s running like the first day I got it. Great job working with your son on car repairs!!
