Today we review, compare, and talk about 20 different wheelsets I have in the shop right now. Each wheel has its own attitude and behavior. I know everyone wants a "which wheel is best" answer, but like all good things in life, it really depends on your budget, your goals, and what you prioritize in a wheel. Why Aren't EMTBs Allowed Everywhere MTBs Are Allowed?

    Hi Steve, do you have any thoughts about the "affordable" ENVE AM30 especially for a hardtail use?

  • @TheFullKanani
    @TheFullKanani День назад

    I think the issue of access should not be whether a bike is motorized but the damage to the trails/hikers it causes. It makes little sense to put an ebike in the same category as a motorcycle as far as use/access to trails, when its impact on the land/other users is more closely aligned with a regular bicycle.

    I just purchased my first set of clip pedals - the Super Bruni Mallet DH. I have setup the cleats on my shoes as per your instructions and I used the provided spacers. (Five Ten Hellcat - sorry, they were on sale and I’m on a budget) Clipping into the left pedal is no problem, easily clips in. However the right one would not go in no matter how hard I pushed. So I decided to check the pins, both sides were at the same height but I wound down the pins on the right pedal. This definitely helped and I could clip in. However it is not the same as the left. It still requires a lot more force and there is no audible click. The only way I know if it clipped in is by lifting my foot to check. Is there something I can do to make the right pedal work like the left one? Also, I’m wondering what could be the reason they are not the same?

    I just made the change from flats to clipless (SPD with Saint pedals) and was really disappointed at the beginning. Somehow the connection to my bike felt wrong and more like I was ice skating. It all changed when I replaced my five ten (well i choose them because on flats they are awesome) with Shimano AM9s. They had the planted feel I was used to form flats but also the nice connection you get with clipless pedals. It seems like the cleat tunnel on five tens is just a tad flatter as on the shimanos so you dont get the connection to the pedal cage but are only standing on the cleat. Sidenote: I liked the Shimano easy release cleats (SH56) so much better than the SH51. Same connected feeling but so much easier to get out especially with limited movement in your feet (-> beeing old :D)

    I have a steel Hummingbird that I recently converted to single speed. The bike performs incredibly well through various terrain. It’s not the lightest but never feels slow. Burlier wheels, 130mm Fox 34 and heavier tires. Will be building the Ti version with lighter wheels and a 34 SC for faster rides and smoother trails. The steel bike is my definition of down country.

    I simply HATE FLOAT. When you´ve really learned to ride with flats and have a consistent pedal press, float feels like an enemy. In fact, I only care about being clipped-in as an insurance policy when riding hard rocky descents, my primary contact point is still the surrounding metal cage of the clipless pedal and their guiding pins.

EMTB = MTB. there is just the disscussion of that that people get on +2500m mountains, where they do not have the skills.. even shared taril with hikes are normal at least switzerland thanks about the history of the non motorized access! Great to know.

    Love Steve's take accounting for historical context to areas and why/how they got setup the way the did. I quit riding dirtbikes because I was sick of having to drive hours through empty public lands all the way to the Rez in order to ride, it just wasn't worth the time in the car...I feel like mountain biking is hanging on by a thread without realizing it!!! Stuff like this gets put to a public vote and there are 1000 non-riders for every one rider and they could care less if we lose access. Here in Socal we have all the kids riding full on E mini dirtbikes in traffic and all around town, average people dont even know they are different from bikes. We also have e-foil surfboards which can be considered personal water craft/boats or can be thought of as just e-surfboards depending on your perspective...whew its complex, and it doesn't help that it all gets tied up in the rhetoric of electronic cars/"green" transportation...

    My experience was the opposite. I tried starting out on Crank Bros Mallet Es and found I couldn't unclip from them to save my life, but I also pronate a bit so the range of motion on my ankle is insufficient to reliably unclip from them. For me personally I like a little float, but Crank Bros either have way too much float where I can't unclip or not enough to the point where it's hard on my knees. SPDs have the perfect amount of float for me and with the multi-release cleats I can reliably unclip, and I've not had any issues with coming unclipped when I don't want to. I would like just a tiny bit more resistance on the float, but trying out bunches of different pedals to find the right one could get very expensive and the SPD trail pedals still work well for me.

    Eleven years ago I also received a diagnosis (that I also don't completely believe was accurate). My symptoms were very similar to what you describe for several years and slowly changed after 4ish years of various treatments. I am grateful to report that I have been 100% symptom free the past two years after making a commitment to rewiring my limbic system (3 years ago). As my health started to come back, it was watching your videos that inspired me to get a MTB again and helped get me motivated to keep it joyful and fun. I have been back to riding for three years now (an average of 150 miles a week this year, until a quad tear a month ago). Thank you for sharing more about your condition and your perspective. I have faith that you will become "healthy and well" again in the future!

I run a 29" ZIPP 3zero moto as a front wheel on my Transition Patrol (Mx) with an e13 carbon rear (27.5) The zipp definitely had flex/squirmed too much for me to run it as a rear wheel but I absolutely like it as a front wheel. Got this little trinket for my DV9 in March. It was an upgrade for sure, most noticeable on narrow rocky root trails where you constantly have to avoid pedal strikes. That said, I don’t think it’s a great system. It’s not an even 5 degrees of engagement, so it still feels a little sloppy compared to a more refined 72 poe hub. It also has some notches from the cassette digging into it and i can feel some binding when I spin the wheel by hand.

    AFAIK Nukeproof are no more anywhere in the world. There may be some new old stock still for sale but they no longer have any official dealerships and they no longer sell online (their website still lists all the products but it also says they have dealers in the US so I don't think its been updated in a while). I know Adam Brayton was sponsored by them and still rides a Dissent but he's mentioned that if he breaks it that's it, even he can't get any spares.
