Unlocking a Sub-3:30 Marathon with Data: Training and Strategy
In this video, Kevin analyses the physiological data of a runner aiming to break 3:30 at the London Marathon next year. The runner wants to identify potential performance limiters and determine which aspects of their training should be prioritised during the winter months to avoid "hitting the wall" on race day and give them the best chance of success.
We examine a variety of key data points, including VO2 max, aerobic and anaerobic thresholds, running economy, and fuelling strategies. Based on this analysis, we highlight the critical areas the runner should focus on to successfully reach their target time.

Great video Kev
Hi there, do you do video analysis? I am trying to improve my freestyle swimming. If you have a couple of minutes to point out my biggest problems and how to solve them would be highly appreciated: watch?v=S6DL16aHY0Q
This video explains it better than the entire Zone3 website.
Great video
what an inspirational and insightful discussion, really enjoyed that guys. Its amazing what you have personally achieved and worked for Matt. Also for geek in me, its amazing to see the application of solid science foundation based approach to training.
Awesome guys, I did the double this yr so crossed paths with Matt a few times. Was blown away by his performance and sorry to hear of the injury! Going by Matts training regime I think I nailed it ( although alot slower)so that was nice to hear. I came in just under cut off with just finishing being my main aim, (my 2nd triathlon with my first being the outlaw in 2013. dec 22 was my first time swimming or biking since in prep for the dbl ) i was happy... however watching this I could have left more out there on the bike, "keep moving forward" too many food stops. Food for thought for sure, i am contemplating the triple..
Thank you for recording and sharing the talks. Cool stuff. Cheers, Seb
well then now your are WET inside... but i want to be DRY inside even when in water.
Thank you Matt and Kevin. I know it's clichéd, but it was truly inspiring. I particularly liked Matt's comments about flexibility. Hopefully next time microphone might be a bit clearer so that I can crank up the volume. Thanks for sharing
Would this be good for walking too? I've had flat feet surgery but still overpronate a bit. Not much of a runner but I do walk and I'm mainly just wanting some stability with really nice cushioning as well so that I'm not in pain as much or as quickly.
Hi Matthew, sorry we didn't get back to you sooner. It would definitely still help if you are a walker. The meta rockers you find in the shoes are also recommended by podiatrists.
Chipping in its 2 year. Bought back glue repair. Zone3 vision. Especially arm pits. But alsow elsewhere
She looks great swimming underwater
I don't know if the video was re-done or not but I don't have a hard time. Good video.
🏊🏼♂️🏊🏻♀️
What about a vid where people can hear you....?!?!?
I have big hands and feet and need to put a plastic bag on hands and feet to get it on easily .
That's the Gaviota 3
Hi Guillermo, thanks for the message. Just double checked and it is definitely the 4th version. www.hoka.com/en/gb/men-road/gaviota-4/1123198.html Cheers Calum
Thank you! . I practice everyday! And swimming is very challenging especially the mind aspect! Thank you
Sorry, but the layer of water idea is a complete myth. Common, I admit, but totally wrong. It arose as a response to criticism of the first wetsuits, when the inventor responded by saying that water in the suit wasn’t such a bad thing as one might think, but it is still a bad thing. When your body warms the water, it gets cold (your warmth goes into the water), and that water then conducts heat out to the surrounding water you’re swimming in, so you have to warm it again, making you cold. This is because water is actually a very good conductor of heat and cannot, under any circumstances, insulate you. Wetsuits work because neoprene contains millions of tiny air bubbles (nitrogen, as it happens). It’s a foam. Air is a poor conductor of heat - ie an insulator, and is what is used in virtually all insulators, from house insulation to thermos flasks to woolly jumpers and coats. Wetsuits are no different. This is why thicker wetsuits keep you warmer, and why better seams and seals keep you warmer. The warmest wetsuit is one that let’s barely any water in at all.
It's not the conduction of the water, but the rate of flushing in and out that can occur. That is the reason why the suit must fit as close as possible to the skin. Then the thickness of the suit matters. Reduction of flushing is most important and is why a diveskin helps you stay warmer. It provides resistance to the water flow in and out.
I have only got back into swimming, and I have so much to learn, my technique has improved but what is holding me back is my breathing. I started 10m 15m now around 20m, if I can get me breathing relaxed I know I can get to 50m and then sky is the limit and I can then work on my technique.
Audio could be better !
keep up,thanks a lot. more coming about swimming techniques
Excellent analysis that rings true for me. I'm going to try to address the inefficiencies I recognize here. This video deserves a lot more views.
Thanks for your feedback. Glad you felt it helped. Keep us up to date with how your swimming progresses
thank you
Wow, really brilliant explanation on breathing when swimming. Learnt a lot from him and understood the mistakes I'm making.
