Afterlight by Dorothy Chang

"The piece is something along the lines of an elegy or threnody, and the title refers not only to its definition (of retrospect) but also my own made-up interpretation of the word afterlight: thinking of the "light" that remains when someone passes, in the form of memories, shared experiences, a sense of presence even when someone is gone. The piece should be played very freely and expressively...

Do you mind me asking what sax, mouthpiece, ligature, and reed you use?
@@Embravado. Yamaha 875EXGP, D'Addario D155, Ishimori Wood Stone Solid Silver, D'Addario Reserve 3.0
Your tone is really good! How do you get that kind of tone out? I’ve been trying to get it for a while now
what tempo is this?
0:15 is gonna be the hardest part of this etude.
Your tone is immaculate!
@@MaddoxHumphries thanks!
Awesome playing!
Thank you!
That kid is awesome but looks old enough to be a dad.
He's a professor 😭
😂
Incredible sound and performance! What is that thing you have wrapped around the neck and mouthpiece? I've seen you and some of your colleagues have that but I've never heard what they are called or what they do.
Thanks for the kind words! It's called a LeFreque Sound Bridge, and it helps a tiny bit with projection and resonance.
@@BobEasonSaxophone Thanks for the reply! If you'll indulge just one more question, I'm curious about the neckpiece you're using. It looks like one of Yamaha's sterling silver variants. If that's the case, do you have an opinion on how much the sterling silver aspect changes the tone or responsiveness (or anything else)? There's some videos out there comparing C1, E1, and V1, but not much info on the specific impact of sterling silver.
@@blaketroutmanar I feel like the sound is a bit more clear and focused with the sterling silver necks. When I use a brass neck, I can make some adjustments in the way that I approach the instrument to give me the same affect, but the silver just seems to do it for me.
Excelente
what mouth piece and reeds do you use?
@@micahkesner6232 D'Addario D155 with D'Addario 3.0 reeds
@@BobEasonSaxophoneyou sound amazing!!
Nice consistent tempo!
Time to learn this etude on my alto😂
Nothing like the tone of the alto, especially with a good vibrato.
Thanks!
Great feel and breath control. Love your Movement ❤ subscribed
You ate that up
how do you get such clean and articulate tonguing in the descending notes?
the 16th notes to be more specific
@@partymaster6475 I think about three things for this: 1) follow through with your air stream, 2) use as little tongue as possible, 3) make the notes as long as possible -- disregard the staccato marks because they will seem short at fast tempos regardless. Hope this helps!
Sounds really good 😁
❤
the GOAT 🔥
Finally, a classical sound that's heavy and full. What mouthpiece? I know. There's a lot more to it than that. I'm a mainly a jazz player, but I like to be able to teach with a classical mouthpiece. Currently using the Bakun TM2.
@@michaelcaldwell7107 Thanks for the kind words! I'm using a D'Addario D155 with strength 3.0 reeds.
Are you using those new organic reeds @@BobEasonSaxophone
@@shaunfernando5349 I think so? I'm honestly not sure. That reed has probably been in my rotation for 7-8 months. Definitely a D'Addario Reserve 3.0 though!

sounding amazing bob!
Thanks, Josh!
Hi Mr. Eason, you sound amazing what fundamentals do you recommend in order to improve tone quality and articulation speed?
Im not a professional or niether a professor, but i can recommend: Long Tones (even form pianissimo to Fortissimo everynote), Octaves and scales. These are my 3 fundamental studies, and as my teacher says " when you do fundamentals you have to be relaxed and do them as if you had nothing to do after those, because if you have a solid base you can build up from it, if not you would have to go back to the base and build it up again"
@@entity3054 alr thanks man appreciate it
@@fazeangz237 longtones, pitch bending exercises, and overtones for tone! I made a tiktok about articulation speed drills a few months ago - the key is to stay relaxed!
I have just listened to 10 different videos of this etude, and yours is the best. Great tone, fast but not rushed, clean fingers, no crushing, even tempo, clean tongue, every single note crystal clear. Great job!

This damn etude is stressing me out 😂
Don't stress! Playing saxophone is supposed to be fun! Enjoy it!
this hurts to play

Gorgeous tone! Just curious, what do you normally do to work on your sound?
Thanks for the kind words! I work on long tones, mouthpiece pitch stability and flexibility, and breath support!
Any advice for the octave jumps, esspecialy the ones in the second line?
Long tones, overtones, octave slurs. Practice the fundaments.
Bruh i wish had this misic mine is hard
Wow what a great sound and technique 👏👏👏 thankyou for sharing.
This etude is super fun but I'm having a bit of trouble on the octave leaps especially on the 2nd and 3rd line, any tips?

Hello, what fingering did you use for the multiphonic at the end of mvt 1?
123456, Eb, Low Bb
@@BobEasonSaxophone I am currently using a Yamaha Custom Ex and this multiphonic is very finicky and weird to get out. How should I approach this-is there a specific note I should be voicing more or less to help this multiphonic better speak?
Currently I am voicing up, without aim really, and this is fairly inconsistent
Try to isolate the high Eb. If you can manage that, the rest should fall into place. Keep the back and middle of the tongue super high.
@@BobEasonSaxophone Thank you!
