How to React to Helicopter Ground Resonance and Avoid Disaster
How quickly does a helicopter pilot need to react to ground resonance before it is too late to prevent the aircraft from self-destruction?
This is a compilation of videos regarding the escaping of the hazardous condition known to rotorcraft aviation as ground resonance. The video of the pilot properly reacting to the phenomena is my own from when I was a student pilot. Since then I have become a flight instructor and now fly up to heavy class helicopters commercially.

High winds, low ceilings, and other weather in the area didn't make for much VFR traffic including keeping myself on the ground for most of the day, but that didn't keep the fighters away. There was first an unexpected visit from the VFA 204 "RIVER Rattlers" F/A-18 Legacy Hornets followed by an even bigger, faster surprise a few hours later when a US Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron "Blue Ang...

Legacy Hornet fighter jockeys, amongst other military and civilian aviators seem to enjoy coming to the Pelican Aviation FBO at Acadiana Regional Airport (KARA) for fuel stops right around lunch time for some awesome South Louisiana Cajun food. Last I checked there's still an active TACAN (military navigational aid equipment), along with an 8,000 foot runway, and a military fuel contract here w...

This is a complete startup guide following the checklist for pre-start, startup, run-up, and shutdown procedures in the Robinson R44 Raven II helicoper. We cover the differences between starting the Lycoming IO-540 when cold versus warm. The Robinson checklist does not cover these differences. It is extremely important to hold the throttle past idle in full detent when initiating the starter wh...

This narrater mumbles.
The HU 30 (Hughes 300) helicopter is a twitchy little machine that needs to be actively controlled at all times!!! My first flights with this type of machine were thankfully with an instructor. I later moved on to the much more forgiving Enstrom F28 to complete my piston engine training before moving on to the much more powerful turbine machines.
I find it to be much more forgiving than most high performance and advanced rotorcraft. I thought it was a great beginner trainer. By the time I was instructing, everything was done in R44s which were capable of much higher performance. They were a bit much for new students.
this just confirms my theory that fixed wing planes want to fly, whereas helis just want to fly apart.
A fixed wing aircraft will cut itself a graceful path through the air where as a helicopter beats the air into submission.
You get what you pay for when it comes to helicopters
I agree with you in a way. I got pretty damn good training, but it also wasn't cheap.
Helicopters are tough to fly.
What did they all have in common? They all occurred with that little egg beater helicopter.
A bit of an ignorant comment. Ground Resonance can occur in any helicopter with a fully articulated rotor system, including the $17 million AW-139 I currently fly. I simply used all H269 based models here as a level comparison.
When in Doubt…. Throttle out!
I have experienced that on a 300CBI ( 269C) a few years ago, in dual commands with an instructor. i remember to had react quickly by increase colective to recover hover, then return to land and all was ok, my instructor told me that's the good reaction to have ...
How to get out of ground resonance. 1). Get it off the ground.
Kudos to that student. Most students would panic and try to keep it on the ground.
The helicopter gods were testing that student and he passed 👏
Perfeito.
Muito bom.
Sounds like a UPS truck.
Who are these guys? Private company?
Those helicopters are pretty but I miss the old BO-105 HELICOPTERS.
Thanks i love the video

Yes. We need to start that up again! Come hang out at our new place next to the airport, and fly our awesome plane. 705 Hangar Dr.
Great video!! Beautiful area of the world definitely!! Quick question - in VFR can you fly just above the broken clouds like that? (i.e. "152" vs. "clear of clouds"). What a great day for flying though! Great footage!
Clear of clouds for class G, and 1-5-2 for class E. Sometimes it's just better to get up there above them. Those were reported as "scattered" so technically not a ceiling, but surely on the brink of "broken". Best advice is always keep a mental track of what's behind you if you need to turn back.
My American government professor was a prior service AF pilot and he said they stopped at KARA all the time so I cooked a few dishes and shared with him
Tks nice video well done Do u have a copy of the checklist used
Tks sooo much very informative I’m about to get my R 44 endorsement Do u have a copy of the checklist Tks Mel
Very cool video
Great video. Very well done
Awesome!
I'm Private Pilot of Helicopter. Recently I made transition from R44 Raven1 to Raven2. This is VERY informative video for starting IO-540. Thank you!
Nice!
why’s your aux fuel pump light on?
Aux Fuel Pump light typically comes on when you disengage clutch.
Start up video and full pre take off checklist please !! God Job on this
Coming soon!
Waiting for the rpm to spike is just torture to watch, 30 seconds and cut the mix. Chopping the fuel at 70% engine rpm is just so wrong. Throttle should be fully closed and engine at idle before shutting down. Then people wonder why they get hardship with their ships 🙄
Waiting for RPMs to rise is the indication that the clutch is fully disengaged and the rotor system has unloaded the engine. We also have a policy of holding throttle past idle in full detent any time while the engine is unloaded from the rotor system. This includes startup (especially warm starts), clutch disengage, and initiating manual autorotations. We are a certified Robinson dealer, service center, and flight school. This information was re-advised by our friends at Robinson at the suggestion by one of our own senior instructors who personally knew Frank Robinson.
This is exactly why I love the UH-1N and 212/412. That will never happen on a two bladed bird.
Have you ever heard of things like low rotor inertia or mast bumping? LOL
Wow, I am impressed. He IMMEDIATELY recognized and did an amazing job getting it under control. So easily could have gone wrong. The one’s that gave this a thumbs down, clearly have no clue about flying!
Wow, got squirly there as soon as the skids left the ground. Good job on getting the helicopter to come down, and proceed straight and level. I dont know much about actual helicopter. I tried to fly an rc helicopter on simulator. Damn that is hard.
He did everything perfect in this video. He was "squirlly" because he had to get the skids off the ground that instant, not half a second more, otherwise we would be watching a video of a helicopter litterally shake itself to pieces.
great job re-adjusting man!
First! ...but it kinda makes me want to learn lol
That's a cool story in the description! I've never flown in a helicopter, but occasionally take a fixed wing lesson. Best flight was a half hour flying a WACO biplane.
Thanks. I've done a few flights in a Stearman and it's some of the most fun I've ever had. Old bi wings are a blast!
Cool
Looks like so much fun, I wonder if the VA vocational rehab has helicopter pilot school?
Where do you see ground resonance here? If he had gotten into ground resonance you would have seen helicopter parts flying all over the airfield.
Ground resonance starts with increasingly violent shaking and ends, if no corrective action is taken, with a destroyed helicopter. It can be saved, of the pilot(s) know what they're doing. Edit: around 0:51, watch the tail, how it starts shaking, followed shortly by the rest of the fuselage. Ground resonance occurs when the rotor blades get "bunched up" on one side, causing oscillation.
How can you have 800k views and no comments
I see no problem with this?
Picked it up immediately as soon as he recognized it. Good job.
Doing a fine job!
Just a bit of a flutter
You break it you bought it .
Excellent film footage and sound.
My ex-wife would create ground resonance when riding her bike ...I couldn't ride anywhere near her.
