Pontoon Repair Overview
Просмотров 7 тыс.3 года назад
This video shows an overview of the steps and method I used to repair cracks in some aluminum pontoons. Always remove plugs before the welding process and this will eliminate fighting any type of gas pressure building up while you are sealing up the last section of weld. After welding you can install a Schrader valve into the drain and add 2 - 3 lbs. of air maximum with a small foot pump to the...

What was your length from the winch part to the front cable that comes down?
i recently bought a poulan PP175G42 from a doctor friend of mine who only had it for about 5 months . his aero turn was giving him trouble and bought this from an estate sale that belonged to a very old man . the reason i just bought it , he has decided to move to another state and doesn't need it anymore . after cutting my yard , i noticed it didnt cut as good as my 4 wheel drive walk behind troy built mower . the left front and right rear tire both has a small hole in the side wall , he had been filling it up with air all this time , i did something kind of stupid , i put fix-a -flat in them to stop the slow leak . tire pressure counts when a well mowed lawn is wanted . then i cleaned it up really good and noticed the blades are really in need of replacing .they are in the worst shape i ever have seen and cannot be re-sharpen , not much blade left LOL . thats a costly job i have to do . then the dect only drops to the 2 and a half position . the deck needs to be worked on , i will get another adjuster for the other side . so i have to spend a few hundred to get it to cut good again , tires , deck work and def some new blades . it looks almost brand new , i got it dirt cheap for 300 dollars so maybe another 300 dollars wont be so bad to have a good riding mower . i also plan on doing full maintenance ,fuel and oil filter , oil change , a E3 special spark plug and a little shot of carburetor cleaner and a dash of marvel mystery oil in the gas tank . i am kindda regretting getting it in a way , i have a lot of obstacles in the yard , but the reverse hack you told me about is one negative i can scratch off my list , thanks again for that ! LOL i still will have to edge ,weed eat and use my push lawn mower , i will have to repair it and see if its worth the trouble to keep . once repaired i know i could at least get a grand for it , i dunno , will have to consider it all one day .
the pull and drain system on the engine os pure genius , this will be my first oil change , just bought it from a doctor who took great care of it , i really like it , its fast and very powerful , looks great also , i love it !!! the only thing i dont like , it wont cut in reverse lol !!!
It should have no problem mowing in reverse, Once started rotate the key back (1) position so that it is at the 12:00 position and it will go in reverse without shutting down.
Why not put a fuel shutoff valve in first instead of using vise grips
This video was shot (4) years ago, I have installed a fuel valve since then and it does make it a lot easier just didn’t have one on hand when I changed the filter.
My my my
thank you so much!
Started mine today (same model as in this video). Mowed for about 45 minutes then it quit… heard a pfft sound near the front left of the engine… and I think I saw something smoking for second. After that it would not start… any thoughts on what it could be…
My guess would be a fuel issue. Check to see if you are getting gas to the carb first. If you are getting fuel to the carb then it needs to be pulled and cleaned out. Good luck keep us updated. 👍
@@artisticoutdoors3115 I tested the fuel solenoid, and it doesn’t seem to be working… No click or anything when I turn the key. So I have one on order. I tested the current to the fuel solenoid and it’s got a full 12 V. Does that sound right?
Also, there was some melted plastic on the fuel solenoid, which is probably what was smoking, which I mentioned in my first comment
@@artisticoutdoors3115 new fuel solenoid, and it fired right up
That’s great news, sorry for the late response I was locked out of the main account trying to respond through a secondary.
Thanks for your help
can you elaborate on that little nipple/fitting connected to the oil plug threads. I like that idea of connecting a hose and letting it drain. I just got mine used and changed the oil, what a mess it made all over the bottom of the engine and frame. What a crappy design. The oil plug should be at the bottom of the sump.
I use a 3/8” ID clear tube with a quick connector hose clamp and it works great. The hose is 16” - 18” long and it just drops down into a bucket. I wasn’t sure about the valve the first time I changed the oil but now I like it.
@@Artisticmetals Okay mine didn't come with that yellow fitting. It just has a square oil plug
Looks like the part is still available at ereplacementparts.com Oil Drain 951-10517A
Hey.. how are you doing? I just wanted to know did you have to jack it up to change the oil?
No need to jack it up it has the access plug on the lower side of the engine and it works great.
@@Artisticmetals Thanks
That isnt damage repair, that is them swapping hull numbers. I guarantee they had another pontoon boat that was broken, bought another boat with no paperwork or title and cut out the hull number and made it look like a repair and replaced it with the one that had paperwork. 2:34
This might be a stupid question but how do you get knobs with long enough screws? All knobs are for cabinets not doors so the screws that come with the knobs aren’t long enough.
I'm sure this is too late, but you can go to menards, lowes or home depot and go to the specialty screw section and choose the right thread pitch and length you need. They are sold individually
At Home Depot in the specialty screw section they have screws that you can break off to the length you need that fit the door knobs threads.
Would love to find the grease points (other than the obvious front ones)
I wish my dad could have taught me this 😢 thanks man
Before you drilled, you said your going to use a center pop up? What does that do and where can I buy that tool?
Once you mark the spot you are going to drill a center pop tool is used to make a accurate indentation in the surface. The spring loaded type can be purchased at harbor freight and they are gold in color or you can just use a small center pop and a hammer. Good luck on your project.
@@Artisticmetals Thank you! I saw the video was posted three years ago, so I really didn’t expect anybody to respond but I thought “well why not.” I’m glad I did. Thanks again.
Remember to cut your access hole CHINA PUMPS DONT LAST.
This saves me from a huge mistake putting the knobs at the weak point of the door where no solid wood exists. Thank you very much.
Another way to think about knob position is to place them on 1/3rds. In other words on a 48 inch opening put the knobs at 16 inches from each other. Visual pleasing.
Shouldn't the knob be installed at the other door instead since it's swinging out towards the direction of the extreme left or right door?
It can be installed on the outside edge of the pivot seam and function in the same manner but it will also expose the knob to getting snagged on clothing while walking by on the left and the the knob on the right will contact the wall.
Thanks mate. Really helpful!
Definitely a tough little tractor. Mine is a smaller version and I'm almost positive it has no oil filter. Just change the oil for the first time in close to 10 years and it was very easy to do. Had a couple rough seasons where it wouldn't start but ended up just being spark plug and battery issues. Paid $250 for it 10 years ago so I definitely got my money's worth. And now with some fresh oil hopefully it lasts another 10.
2 grand , give or take a very little for it today ! lol .....
Perfect!
Considered buying an old pop up like this one really cheap and trying to fix cables( I know NOTHING , son in law a tiny bit). After watching this, ABSOLUTELY NOT!! Glad I saw this before I threw money away!! Seems ALOT of work and know how
Great information about the pivot point and the difference in density between the different points in the door. Thank you.
Do you have to press clutch everytime you change speeds?
Poulan Pro is a good machine. Lots of years of good use with mine.
I'm pretty certain that when you check the oil level, you DO NOT twist the cap back down. You simply put the stick straight down and pull it straight back up. My TORO self-propelled is like this, per the user manual. Also, It only makes sense.
CHECK ENGINE OIL LEVEL•The engine in your tractor has been shipped, from thefactory, already fi lled with sum mer weight oil.•Check engine oil with tractor on level ground.•Remove oil fi ll cap/dipstick and wipe clean, reinsert thedipstick and screw cap tight, wait for a few seconds, remove and read oil level. If necessary, add oil until"FULL" mark on dipstick is reached. Do not overfi ll.•For cold weather operation you should change oil foreasier starting (See "OIL VISCOSITY CHART" You want to tell us all again how certain you are?
Poulan Pros are very good tractors
I had a problem with two cables at the same time . I contacted a Starcraft dealer and they sent me a set of cable replacement instructions that cable with wiring diagrams . It was very nice of them ..
Would you be willing to share that?
@@marlamorris3721 Yes but I wouldn't know how to get the info to you . I already have the 9 pages photoed .
If the factory oil filter wont come loose..take a screw driver and a hammer and puncture filter from one side to the other using the screw driver as a turning handle
I do that. It creates little mess but putting a card board under it avoid spill on tractor.
This works good until you accidentally do that on a truck and hit your oil pan by accident😊
Hello. How do I contact you . I have questions about your repairs? Serious inquiry. Please message me through Facebook. Thank you
I have a question it’s not about what your talking about bought i just bought a 1988 starcraft camper and it’s missing the crank to rise it do you know where I can get one from or anyway you can send me a picture of how it looks
You can find them on eBay just search for StarCraft crank handle and it should pull one up. It’s not letting me post a picture on the reply.
Hello, Do you know what size the belt is for this mower? I have the same exact one and need to replace.
Depending on the model number, mine takes a PP8806 according to the list online.
@@Artisticmetals hello, I ended up finding the mower belt. Now I’m looking for the blade brake and the blade arm.
THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH ALSO CAUSES A NO START SITUATION IF THE SENDING UNIT MALFUNCTIONS ,REASON FOR IT IS TO SHUT DOWN FUEL OFF IF OIL PUMP GOES. JUST A HEADS UP. SINCE YOU FULLY LOADED THE PARTS CANNON MAY AS WELL PUT A NEW ONE IN TOO. LOOKS LIKE WHAT WAS DONE WAS NEEDED.
Having similar issue with a 1994 Astro van 4.3 L. Crank no start. I hear the fuel pump priming. Didn't use a code scanner because the van is disabled in the backyard. Does this model have a CKP crankshaft position sensor? If so, where is it located? I can't seem to find any diagrams from google search.
If these 4.3L set for very long especially with the modern fuel they gum up in a hurry in the injection nozzles. They do have a couple sensors on top of the engine but I can’t remember the placement it’s been a while since I worked on this one. This Astro ran fine and then it sat for 5 months and that was enough to plug up the lines.
The crankshaft position sensor is located next to the crank pulley on passenger side.
Are those knobs uneven?
Just the camera angle, the knobs are at 3.5” panel C/L with a 1” offset.
You funny man!!! Thank you for the video. Good job.
I have a 1983 StarCraft popup. I am trying to replace the cables underneath the trailer. Should the camper be completely down when I do this? Can I and should I take the winch off or leave it on when I hook up the cables. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
I would have the camper completely down which will leave the least amount of cable wrapped. The 85’ I did had (2) main cables running off the spool front and rear and then they had a T connection to the corners. With that setup it was easier just to remove the winch allowing for accurate length estimates and it was easier to start the new cable on to the spool. I would tie the front and rear corner lift cables together with a bungee cord or something just to keep tension on them while working on the main just so that the don’t roll off the inner pulleys because of the slack. Good luck 👍
@@Artisticmetals thank you that helps
@@Artisticmetals I'm just wondering right now I've got the winch turned all the way to the bottom and I've got the top braced do you think I still need to lower the whole unit
@@jimpappas4244 As long as it is braced well I think you could back the tension off and replace the cables with the roof elevated. Are you replacing all of the bottom cables or just the main ones on the winch spool?
@@Artisticmetals just the ones on the winch spool. Just trying to figure out how to make the tension right. I ordered the factory cables, so the length should be right
I can't hear anything. talking to soft.
I can’t adjust your volume settings but that would be my suggestion.
@@Artisticmetals they were all the way up. My last hearing test said I could hear a church mouse fart in a mosh pit. I'm definitely not hard of hearing. I plan to get a better sound bar for my computer though. Either way, really hard to hear you. But I'll get a soundbar for it and rewatch the vid. Thx
@@carcasscruncher9354 That is definitely some good hearing haha, I will try to speak louder in the future thank you for the feedback.
Thanx!
Good advice.
What do you have there on your lower unit?
Sorry, I’m not sure what you are referring to. It’s my friends boat so I don’t know a lot about the features but I can find out if you have any questions.
where are you located? can i hire you!
Your lawnmower doesn’t hold as much oil as a 7.3 lol yours takes like 2 and 7.3 powerstroke takes 15 quarts smh
Really captain obvious, I guess you should look up humor / joking in the dictionary. I have a 7.3 and I’m well aware of the capacity on both.
Duh! You really thought he was serious? LOL!
How did you get the oil flow started?
At the 2:50 mark on the video it shows the process of opening the valve.
I couldn't figure mine out at first and when I turned it the whole piece came off. After cleaning it up. So the first time was a mess but the next time will be a breeze.
Thank you so much you saved me a lot my knob had fell off while my door was closed and I didn’t know how to open it thanks to you I was able to
Really needed all this information. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!!
Not newbie to having a pop up, but I haven't had one for several years and have a new to me 1987 Meteor and the back cable and pulleys look rusty but the right rear is somewhat frayed on the loop, so I would like to change the rear cables and probably the pulleys. I am cleaning up some rust and caked on dirt underneath the rear then I'm going to lubricate them with silicone spray liquid wrench and crank it up. The front looks good and the trailer is in quite good shape otherwise for its age. I have some dry lithium grease spray to put on the rear winch, except I read not to put it on the braking part! My question is if that bad, one or two strand frayed cable doesn't break on me do I have to have the roof up to change the cable? Do I just lower the roof a tad and put a bit of slack on the cables and go from there, or do I'll leave it fully extended and put a brace in that is as the roof height? I cannot find the roof height in the 1997 manual for the Meteorite model, or my one side only bed extension Meteor. I do have the instructions on changing the cable though. Just looking for some inside tips as I have never attempted something like this before. Thank you for your great video! Hope this question isn't too blatantly blind. I guess I also have to remove the winch plate to insert the new cable as well.
Are you talking about the bottom cables that run horizontally side to side off of the winch or the vertical cables?
@@Artisticmetals yes the bottom cables that run side to side where the rear winch is. The front horizontal ones are okay and there is very little rust there at all. The previous owner must have had the back of the pup parked in a wetter area more prone to surface rust I'm guessing? I probably have to change those back two rivet pulleys. There are instructions in the manual, but I'm not too clear on the entire procedure yet after the removal. The part they show to replace looks like it is just for a pulley replacement in the bracket with a screw through it? I think Canvas Replacements and Pop up parts sell replacement cables I will have to call and inquire as to replacement parts for those two brackets and/or pulleys as I don't see them on their website only the other ones that go in the lifter arms.
@@shelleyw5951 Sounds like your system is setup a little different than this one. But I would definitely replace any frayed or rusty cables according to the manual. My horizontal cables are larger than the verticals and are pretty easy to replace. The last thing you want is to have a cable fail while camping.
Great video! Thanks, friend
Super helpful video!! Thank you!!
