The Future of Turn-Based Battles Looks Bright | JRPG Watch

The first upload of what I'm tentatively calling JRPG Watch, a twice monthly video series checking in on my favourite genre of games. Here, I look at how games like Sea of Stars and Metaphor: ReFantazio are helping turn-based battles make a comeback, despite the likes of Final Fantasy heading in an action-heavy direction. 0:00 The Future of Turn-Based Battles Looks Bright 6:10 Reviews and News ...

The Visions of Mana Demo Left Me With Visions of Cautious Optimism

Two hours with the Visions of Mana demo left me worried that some weighty combat and gorgeous environments can't save it from tripping and falling into JRPG mediocrity.
Review | Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus Metroids the Vania Well

A review and breakdown of the delightfully difficult Bo: Path of the Teal Lotus, expanded from my review over at PCGamesN.
I've already played through the Metaphor demo three times, and I'm scouring RUclips for every video talking about it that I can find because I really REALLY don't wanna ruin the game for myself by level grinding (I've already got a level 21 character! And I've seen the RUclips videos of people stuck in the same dungeon as me, who are level 30+, with all their Archetypes maxed! I don't wanna do a "level 99 in the first dungeon" run for my first playthrough!!), so I'd be interested in hearing your thoughts on the demo!
Haha you’re a machine!! I haven’t played it yet because I was at Tokyo Game Show all week. I will definitely be playing it once things settle down a little, though! And making a metaphor specific video shortly after launch.
lol you did a god, planet destroying, race wiping skill or combo on the enemy and he’s still standing xD
It’s not a JRPG unless you cast a spell that destroys a planet but only deletes 0.3% of the enemy’s health bar
No mention of the SaGa franchise? It has been carrying the torch of excellent turn-based jrpg goodness for many years. edit: saw you mentioned Emerald Beyond, nice. I'm a huge fan of SaGa, and I no longer call myself a Final Fantasy fan. These days I make it a point to only support Square-Enix's jrpg franchises that stayed completely turn-based, I loathe what FF has become. I don't hate action rpgs, but I did not want FF to become action rpgs. Unless they make a pixel-art 2d turn-based mainline Final Fantasy XVII (which will never happen bc FF has been run by cowardice for many years), i have abandoned that series entirely just as it has abandoned me.
I’ve unfortunately missed out on the SaGa games but like, so many JRPGs so little time. I’ve never been a big FF fan myself but yeah, I feel you - FF16 wasn’t even an RPG I’d argue. I had enough fun with it but never want to touch it again. For both our sakes I do hope they shift back to a more traditional style
Great video, RUclips put you on my home page. You got my sub! Looking forward to seeing more videos from you!
Also, I prefer longer ones. Trails is my favourite franchise
Hey that’s awesome! I’m glad you liked it & I hope RUclips puts me on more home pages. Comments like yours keep me going even when I’m at like only 300 views lol
Did you start with the series early or spend a decade catching up? Because I feel like not starting early has set me back so I’ve only played FC
@@lowellbell I started with Trails of Cold Steel in 2017, also RUclips will definitely put you on the front page more as you make more content! If you ever want to collaborate I would do so happily! I remember what it was like in the early grind!
@ColinLack I can’t help but feel like I’m missing out if I don’t start at the very beginning. Was that the case with Cold Steel? Anyway - followed you on Twitter!
I know you're talking about JRPGs, but 2023 Game of the Year was ALSO a turn based game. The style is more alive than evar.
That's a great point! I'm still playing a ton of BG3 instead of catching up on JRPGs.
I bought way too many games from Steam sales (most being 100 hour games) to ever play them in my lifetime. My choice is to realize money is wasted or to become a hermit that mooches off other people the rest of my life while I play video games all day long.
Yeah I have my Steam library hidden so I don't feel bad about it anymore. I feel you. I mentioned some Steam sales in this video but I bought nothing myself.
You know what I liked most about games like FF16 or Stellar Blade? Or the Ryza games? That I could finish them in a weekend or a week or so. Most JRPGs have complex systems and gimmics and a convoluted story with a lot of loose ends and twists waiting to happen until the end. If you don't experience their story continuously and you just hop on and off every few weeks or so, it will have no impact. I am at that point in my life (almost in my 40s) where I only get a bit of time, maybe an extended weekend or so every few months, or a free week, or a quieter period with work and responsibilities when I can dedicate my afternoons for gaming. But these snippets of free time are rare and far in between. I used to love long games when I was in my teenage years and had all the time in the world, but now, games with 100 hours of content and hours long dialogue sections (in RPGs, I have no issue with VNs, I read VNs) kind of drive me away, or I lose interest in them when, for example, I play for a weekend, finish about 1/4 of the game, I drop the game for about two-three weeks, and then when I have an afternoon to play again I need to waste time to remember the gameplay systems and to remember the story (even worse if it has a ton of loose ends). No matter how good the game is, if I have to relearn everything mid-game, I kinda lose interest in playing. So yeah, in this stage of my life, weekend-long games are ideal, anything longer is a bit of a turn off (even though I really want to play them).
That's very true -- partially why I love JRPGs though. I agree as someone in his mid-thirties that I simply can't keep up like when I was a teenager and could play a game for 18 hours straight! I'm glad I'm not the only one that's struggling. I just cleared Astro Bot and it was a nice little pick up and play when I had time. Cheers for the comment!
I've come to the realization that I prefer 10-30hr main story games. Not only because my job/family/other responsibilities limit the amount of time I can spend gaming, but I also get fatigued after a while and just want to move on to the next thing. I don't mind if they have side-content that extends it to 100+hrs as I usually don't do everything but it is good for other that like to 100% a game. I've been playing Sea of Stars since May of this year and I'm about 27 hours in so I'm close to beating it.(one of my favorite RPGs so far) I beat Xenoblade Chronicles II and I had to take over a year long break about half-way due to it having such a long story (Amazing game though). Live a Live had a great story and perfect length. I highly recommend! I'm about 20 hours into tears of the Kingdom and had to take a break from that too. Want to try Star Ocean Second Story R, and Unicorn Overlord at some point.
Yeah I think that’s a good word for it - fatigued. I envy you for being able to ignore side content. I think I fatigue myself by trying to do it all! I love Sea of Stars too but the JRPG community is generally pretty harsh on it, which shocks me. I’m glad you’re enjoying it though - I actually got to review it for PCGamesN! I did take a break with Tears of the Kingdom as well, even as a huge Zelda fan. (I found every Korok in BOTW…) Live A Live, Second Story R, and Unicorn Overlord are all on my list! Pick em up cheap sometime in the near future. Thanks for the great comment!
100% for shorter games. 60hrs is about the most I want to spend on any given game.
Even then, 60 hours seems like it’s pushing it!
Depend on the game, if both story and gameplay is good, I like it long so the game can be experienced longger. If the gameplay is boring, but story is good, I will just fast forward watch other people's playthrough on youtube. If the story is boring but the gameplay is good, I prefer the game to be short. If story and gameplay both sucks, rather not play it at all.
That’s a pretty nuanced take! I can handle games with bad story but great RPG systems but I cannot handle games with bad mechanics despite the story being good. I’d rather just read a novel at that point.
My opinion to that question? Nope! Give me a long JRPG anyday! I just love em long.
I envy you! I want to play them all but just can’t find the time.
@lowellbell Me? I just take my time with it. It might take me a while to finish the game. But I understand it's hard when you don't have the time.
@@MewCocoa That's the problem! If it takes me a while to finish a game, another game that I want to play comes out before I finish it. Never ending cycle.
@@lowellbell ahhh I see. I understand. I can’t really relate to that as much because I’m a game hopper. So I’ll always mostly be playing multiple games at once, unless one game fully has my attention like metaphor will
@@MewCocoa Haha I see! I used to be like that until I would get overwhelmed and finish nothing, so I try to stick to 2 - 3 games at once. Right now it's BG3 and Astro Bot, which I want to finish before Echoes of Wisdom and ReFantazio.
I budgeted one $30 switch game this week. the whole time it was gonna be Yars Rising. I even had it in the shopping cart. a very last second change and I chose this instead. I'm glad I did. Yars will remain on the wish list, but I think I'm enjoying the action of this over the cutesy metroidvanianess of Yars Rising, but I'm still looking forward to playing it. my way of buying and playing games is a mess. I bought Void Bastards two months ago and have yet to even start it. yeah I'm playing this game first? anyways, great video and much appreciated.
Glad I could help! I think you’ll get a lot of mileage out of this one. I’ve gone back a few times since wrapping up the review. Yars Rising looks great as well. Definitely one of those games I’m keeping an eye on to pick up much later.
Spider Rosa MI Amor❤❤❤
I just realized she didn’t make it into this video! She was the last Outlaw rescued in that run.
@@lowellbell SAD! That's not very Picante of you
"The future of turn base looks bright" But does future of action rpg looks bright?
Maybe a good topic for a future JRPG Watch??

If I were to eat a Pokémon it would be a Mr. Mime
I wonder if Mr. Mime tastes like cotton candy
Hopalong is incredible he can get increased map movement, is very quick in combat his special stuns everyone on the map and while his weapon is basically short range 1v1 rope it will kill anything.
You’re not wrong! I found his stun great with The Judge. However I personally didn’t really enjoy playing as him, as the rope was kinda boring
Cant get over how trash the animation style looks. I know what they were going for but wow does it look janky and bad. Too lazy to animate actual stop motion, just make everything look likr a bad 80s game
Really? I found it charming. Really grew on me quickly, but to each their own. Thanks for the comment either way!
@lowellbell good review BTW. Reviews should also help us know what's not for us so we don't have to deal with customer support and refund requests Ty
@@matthewdeklerk3457 Thanks man!
I hope no game follows the Sea of Stars example. I found the gameplay and story boring while character dialogue was a little cringe. The only positive thing I found was the art direction and style. I don't understand how SoS got that overwhelmingly positive reception, for me it's a 5.5/10 at max.
I’ve actually been surprised to find the JRPG community is so split on Sea of Stars. The JRPG subreddit has a thread bashing it daily but I loved it lol
There are definitely a good amount of fps roguelites, off the top of my head there’s Gunfire reborn Robo quest Deadlink Golden light Nightmare reaper Otherwise good review.
Fair point! I haven't played/seen much of those myself. Anyway, thanks for watching and commenting!
Strong video bro
Strong comment bro! Much appreciated
The way they can become enemies or pals sounds a lot like what Darkest Dungeon 2 did. Very cool, definitely picking this up after my obsession with Deadlock fades a little.
Yeah that was one of my favourite mechanics. Makes the tougher bouts much more manageable

Thanks for the review
You’re welcome!
Nice review, and you have a good talking speed 👍 keep it up
Hey thanks Lisamtylor! Will do my best.
Thank you for the review! It’s shocking how few reviews there are for this game. I appreciate you getting this out quickly. Is there meta-progression, anything in-game that carries over from run to run? It sounds like characters might? If this is a straight roguelike like Binding of Isaac, unfortunately it’s probably not for me. Edit: Also, can you save mid-run?
Hey thanks for watching! Progression carries over from star system-to-system with each full run lasting like 10 hours (about 16 star systems with 5 - 6 planets you'll visit each?), so you could think of a single run like several mini-runs with skills that carry over between them but items that do not. It does autosave constantly so you can quit anytime. Once you finish the run however, it's all gone and back to square one when you play again, though you can bump up the difficulty and turn on Iron Man mode etc. No progression carries over other than enemy data.
@@lowellbell I really appreciate your in-depth breakdown here. Thanks again!
That was a very good review. Thanks man

I literally just got inside of Lavos today in 12,000 BC. About to beat the game yet again for iOS. Im also about to get back to DQXIS to grind for seeds so I can be strong and beat the baddies in the 2D spirit world. I know Visions of Mana is t turn based but I’m enjoying that right now too. I highly recommend it if you love RPGs period. Refantazio is something I want to get but I will wait for the Switch version.
That's awesome! Chrono Trigger is literally the best JRPG ever made, and I'll fight anyone who says otherwise. Looks like you got a lot of JRPGs on your plate so you don't need to pick up ReFantazio anytime soon.
Love the reviews, keep em’ coming!!!
You're fucking fast
Resonance of fate was my shit. You good sir earned a sub
Needs a sequel even all these years later
Ngl i love these ff7 remakes, and i hope they will do it with ff9 and other ff games. But what i do miss in current ff games are the colorfull diverse characters we could play as and the turnbased combat off course. And i had a fun time with ff16 way more fun then with ff15 which i hated. But i really miss the fantastical colorfull characters and the fun in creating your team. And growing up i used to play a lot of ff and the turnbased combat was always very good, i miss that to. Hopefully someday we can get back to that or maybe another game will fill that gap for me. I am very excited for metaphor
I agree -- I love that traditional collect-a-thon of colourful companions and really missed it in FF16. I didn't get around to FF15 myself unfortunately. I do like the FF7 remakes but can't beat some traditional turn-based fun.
@@lowellbell so true! Always been a big fantasy turn based game lover. So cant wait for the new games coming. Expedition 33 looks beautifull and fun. And off course metaphor cant wait for that one. I will follow you just because of this video❤️
@@supahmajoo Excited but worried how I'm gonna play them all!
@@lowellbell haha yeah i feel you!!^^ thats why baldurs gate was soo good, it got all the time it needed. No other great games where around at that time
Im still mad at the Lufia DS reboot, when i saw they abandoned the turn based game for that action rpg style i was furious. I love turn based rpg specially older ones mostly because i always loved the sprite work.
Yeah I'd be heartbroken if they did that to like, Chrono Trigger in a remake. Hopefully Lufia gets a fully turn-based reboot again someday
i really want to mention trails through daybreak 2 (kuro no kiseki 2) which i think should be coming out sometime in 2025 but it comes with a caveat of recommending new players start with the trails in the sky fc which is a huge ask, ill admit. but if one does, id say they experience the evolution of turn-based game play throughout a franchise and they get to witness in real time the kiseki series be one of the franchises carrying the genre since 2004. and though it might seem like a lot of time to get through, once you catch up, there's a good chance you'll be wishing there was more to play.
I truly do believe people when they say the Trials games are by far some of the best JRPGs out there, and it's one of my life goals to play through them all. It's really hard when you're an adult though and JRPGs are just so damn long. Maybe I'll look into them more in a future episode!
@@lowellbell relatable. i get it. you do you and whatever you think is the most fun at any particular moment. very neat video though. nice to hear someone talk about that back and forth trend between action jrpgs and turn-based ones.
I'm so excited for Metaphor, it's insane. Only one month left!
