@@AndrewSacoman The “entry level” hybrid a7III set the industry benchmark in 2018. To compete in 2025 with the Z6III, R6II & upcoming R6III Sony will need more than a refresh of the a7IV to retain leadership position. They’ve got the technology to deliver an a7V that leapfrogs Nikon & Canon. Hoping it’s the 42mp sensor being rumored.

Interesting, I didn’t experience that type of issue at all with mine. Not sure what your lens and settings are but you might try using the APS-C crop and a fast shutter speed on shutter priority to see how it performs if you haven’t already tried that. A tripod or monopod can always help with stability as well.

Running through the menu and setting the camera up I did also notice I drained a lot of battery. Once I’ve been out shooting though I’m hard pressed to need more than a single battery during a shoot. I would say monitor that heating up you’re experiencing though. Mine only heats up if I’m really pushing the camera taking video. If you feel like it’s happening way too much might consider taking it back for a replacement. Enjoy the camera!

​@@AndrewSacoman The battery drain and heat reduced when I turned on airplaine mode which turns off all the wireless stuff. The heat was coming from the base of the camera near the lens mount. I also discovered Sony removed the NFC in the r5 compared to the r4. The NFC was pretty useless under the old operating system. Connecting the camera to the phone was a nightmare. It would work and then not work. I find with the r5, connecting to the phone app via wifi was quick and painless. I still would have loved a QR code connection method. That would be the ultimate in simplification. Once connected the new Monitor and Control app is very easy to use.

What issues do you think are the most troublesome? Every brand has their issues and certain cameras absolutely have more than others.

I'm running on a Mac so I won't be a ton of help there but if the experience is the same it should open a separate program that might be called Electron (the app framework it runs on).

I haven’t begun my medium format journey yet but I’m floored by the results from my friends who have. GFX is very high on my list to try.

I was close to buy the GFX system, but it is more expensive, biger and more heavy, it is not as versatile a system as a full frame Camera system, so even if I could get a bit better image quality, I prefer the more compact, light weight size and versatility of Sony full frame Cameras. For the price of one Fuji GFX 100S II I can get two Sony A7V on offer, or one A7RV and some very nice Lenses.

This is pretty much where I landed as well originally. Plus I was already invested in E-mount glass so it made sense.

Those lenses are on my list to get as upgrades. Simply incredible what Sony has done with their GM lineup.

I had Sony camera and other products before, and they were good. The combination of A7RV and the GM2 family of lenses are performance wise outstandingly great. They are worth every penny what I paid. 😅

Congrats on choosing your camera! Nikon is making some very compelling options right now, so is Fuji. I actually had a section I recorded for this video with alternatives from other companies. It felt slightly disingenuous of me to include it because I haven't actually shot with those other systems so I cut it. Always pick the camera that matches your needs and speaks to you. We are spoiled for choice with modern cameras!

That is a great tip about shooting in APS-C mode with the center bracket tracking. It could definitely be a big help for sports photography. I’ve got a video on learning sports photography coming in 2025, I’ll be sure to test this in the video! I’m using xavc-s to keep some of the file size down, hangover from the A7C days. I am considering switching to intra for max info.

You can do all those things with A6700 and a PC, both for half the price.

@m4rcin847 yep A6700 is the best bargains out there, I had it and moved on to the a7cr, because 61MP, and FF.

You sure can and the 6700 is a great camera. APS-C and Micro 4/3 are also highly capable sensors and systems that are easier on the wallet. They do have limits and conditions that they aren’t as suited for. Please don’t ever take what I use or prefer as a “this is the only way to do it” kind of endorsement. Everyone has a different set of needs and a different budget and there are great options for all right now.

Gotta love it when those investments pay off, congratulations on the new camera! I'm still in awe at what it's capable of and how much I enjoy using it. I've got a whole series of videos planned for 2025 that will continue to showcase what this thing can do. Hoping I look back a year from now and am shocked at how much more I used all the functionality and how good the results are.

I’m going to address this in a future video because it seems to be quite a divided topic. I really do listen to this feedback from you all and try to make my next videos better than the last. I also now suffer from tinnitus despite being unbelievably careful with my ears. Unfortunately I have engaged in most hearing destructive behavior over my lifetime (listening to loud music, playing in loud bands, air shows, yard work, target shooting, etc) and it added up over time.

My eternal answer is “it depends”. What do you primarily shoot? Hobbyist or professional? Photo only or video too? What missing features (like ibis) are holding you back? And critically what falls within your budget? There are already, and likely will continue to be, some serious deals on the a7iii and A7iv as version v is on the horizon. If the body is where your problem lies either would be a big step forward from gen 1. In my opinion though the old wisdom of high quality glass > better camera body holds true.

@@AndrewSacoman absolutely, I want to shoot other than what I do now in like daylight. Is low light. So what Im thinking of investing in is like some wide apriture glass, any thoughts on the Sony 50mm fe ? After that I want to test a camera with ibis to see how much slower shutter speeds it’ll allow me to go handheld. If its not to much then I’m not gonna bother.

Low light photography is fun and challenging! The 50mm 1.8 isn't an extremely high performing prime in most of the categories (focus motors, chromatic aberration, bokeh) BUT for the price to performance it's really tough to beat. Set expectations accordingly and I think you'll enjoy it. The IBIS will help big time with going handheld at low shutter speed. You could also consider a monopod for added stability (even with your current camera) if you're going past the HH limits. Last thing I'd say is with something like the A7Cii or the A7iv you can push the iso farther than before and recover a lot of it in Lightroom/Topaz if you use those tools. I always try before I buy when possible, good strategy.

@@AndrewSacoman thank you!, I already use a monopod at work. I also do like videography professionally, though I’m mostly into stills as the hobby. So I’m very femiliar with like the fx9/6 and fx3. We also have great stills cameras there so that’s kinda where I have gotten to try most gear. Like I know I hate working with like a7r series. Because the files are just unbearably big. I work for a news station so we usually bring both the video camera and a stills camera. Did the mistake once to bring a a7r3 and everything took so long haha. But even so, even like using great cameras on the regular basis. The original a7 doesn’t feel that much different. It’s probably crazy to say that. But other than ibis and like Silent shutter. And ofc dual native iso is probably something that would be a great upgrade for lowlight. But Those issues are for the most part issues I can work around by knowing how to properly expose. Lightroom is just too powerful haha. I’ve been looking at the a7iii for quite some time though but it’s a lot heavier. But probably what I’ll go with. The A7iv I’ve tried and it’s build quality is just not there, idk what they changed but we have had a few of those break. Not as bad as the fx6 though haha. Fx6 is a great camera but we have had 3 of them die on us, mostly the audio would just stop working, and the hotshoe design is outdated it’ll slowly slide out overtime. Anyways so I haven’t pulled the trigger yet . I would consider the a7c but it has the small view finder. So I’m not really sure.

That’s incredible! If you love that original A7 you’ll probably love the successors too. Have you ever tried using that FX3 from work for stills? Ignoring the 12mp resolution that should give you a decent sense of the results te ibis, silent shutter, and dual native ISO will give you. Those internals are the same as the a7siii which is the best in low light. The only reason I don’t have one of those already is just price. Tough to justify owning two cameras that pricey as a hobbyist.

I'm very surprised to see this, I have never heard this of Epidemic though I have of other groups. Anecdotally that has not been my personal experience, even when my subscription was inactive. I will research though, thanks for the perspective.

A Sony A7RIIIA is a better and cheaper buy for photography than a A7IV, I had the A7RIII which is a great Camera ! Now I use a Sony A7RIVA and Sony 7RV, the RV has better EVF, IBIS and AF than the RIV/IVA, but I do like the older menu system more than the new menu system, no matter what some youtubers say !!!

I certainly enjoy the new menu system but I'm also agnostic about it changing over time. I didn't hate the old menus and to each their own, down to preference.

@@AndrewSacoman I love my a7siii more than my a7r5 for some reason. My a7iv always takes the back seat and remains in the cabinet most of the time. But it's younger sibling a7c2 is always in my bag. Talking about small cameras my zve10 with 15mm 1.4G on it is always on my gimbal and kind of run and gun for any video shots. I sometimes question myself why I take video shots with zv e10 with all the other cameras just resting. May be size is the reason.

Funny how we gravitate to certain cameras isn’t it?! If you’re using that a lot form factor a lot might be worth considering a ZV-E1 trade up somewhere in your kit. Even if it’s *gasp* trading the A7iv or A7Rv. I feel like camera manufacturers slept on small form factors and ease of use for a number of years thinking phones owned that segment. The evidence speaks for itself in the ZV lineup that the market is there.

@@AndrewSacoman Yeah certainly. I love that small form factor and that’s why I had picked a7c2 in the first place. But even that feels little heavy compared to plastic body of zve10. I am personally not a fan of zve1 though because of the heating issues. I would rather pick slightly bigger fx30 if I must.

I tried running a side chain compression duck on my audio and didn’t refine it nearly as much as I should have. In the past I’ve taken the volume down even further and done some EQ carving for my voice. I appreciate the advice and take it as intended. Thanks for watching!

I believe it is a closed beta and only a subset of users were chosen for testing. You should presumably gain access when it goes to full release. I've gotten no word on timing of that release at this point.

At some point I might do a comparison with a few other services but I’ve been quite happy with Epidemic thus far.

I knew I was forgetting something! By default it’s in your documents folder but you can choose which folder it goes into in the plug-in settings. You can also make the folder relative to where the project is stored. I have a single shared folder for music I put all my tracks in for every project that I scoped to.

Great question! There are a couple ways to do that but the easiest is right click the multicam clip and hit Open In Timeline. That will show all cameras in the timeline and color page. Then you can grade and match each individual clip as normal.

The FX3 is a complete powerhouse! Congrats on a very cool camera. The 17-28 Tamron one of my all time most used lenses. Highly recommend though it suffers some distortion at 17mm. If you have a local rental place give it a try for a shoot and see if it works for you. I do want a Sony 16-35 GM ii but that price is eye watering.
