How America's food system affects Type 1 Diabetics
We must change America's broken food system! The mismatch between what we produce and what we should eat ... What we need is a radical change in the food we produce and how that food is used. Too many people are getting diagnosed with Chronic illnesses and that number is only increasing. We must fix the food system - but the first step is learning what steps to take in your own life and your own household.

I was just diagnosed in July (age 28) and they also talked to me like I'd never be able to have carbs. I was extremely depressed for other reasons long before the DKA. When they told me I'd have to eat mostly vegetables for the rest of my life it just crushed me. At the time I was like so let me get this straight... my life was already pain and now you're telling me I can't have any of the foods that make life worth living? I was genuinely done. I actually tried to kms in the ER that first night. At one point the CDE I had asked why I was upset and I said because I'll never be able to have junk food again. I was hoping her response would be comforting and that she'd tell me I can have junk foods in moderation as a special treat but all she said was "oh honey but that stuff is not doing anything for you" I was so mad. Like really? Y'all can't just tell the suicidal girl she can have one measly little potato chip if it makes her feel better? Not "doing anything" for you? Who tf thinks about food that way! I'm glad they sent me to a psychiatric hospital for another week because I met 2 other people there who had t1d too. Between them and the online community I discovered later I'm finally learning that I can still eat most things as long as I take enough insulin.

I was diagnosed in 1968 and started on insulin the end of November 1970 (Those holidays tend to do that it seems). I'm telling you that there wasn't home glucose meters until 1983 and were not inexpensive. Now we are fortunate to have meters readily available and now CGM's. So you can know what foods and drinks are doing to your glucose levels which is a major piece of information to know in your treatment. The complications of uncontrolled blood glucose levels are real. However, if having a glucose level of 300 one day doesn't mean one will go blind, need kidney dialysis, or amputation the next day. Complications take time so don't panic if it takes awhile to get things on track. Specialist's such as endocrinologist are very beneficial in treating and advising you. But one need's to take personal responsibility for caring for oneself. The doctor isn't putting food on your plate every day. And the one thing that bugs me to no end are those that "brag" about how little insulin they use daily. They accomplish this by by hours of exercising, fasting 18 hours a day and only eating boiled chicken breast and broccoli. If that's how you want to live, go for it. One can achieve good control eating sensibly which includes special occasions and using or even "dumping" insulin on it to accomplish that. No shame in that. A working pancreas would and does it all the time! And Samantha is correct in learning from others as well. You will find that the "very learned and experienced" still mess up from time to time as well. Which is reassuring.

I had my second Diaversary yesterday. I was misdiagnosed as I was 44 years at the time and my primary doctor didnt know any better. Despite I had a BMI at 22 and I was told to eat less and exercise more as well as was put on Metformine. The treatment didn't go particularily well and my HbA1C increased from 96 to 103 mmol/mol (11.6 % ). Luckily the doctor had a suspicion that it might be Type one. I went in to further testing and I was put on Insulin and got a CGM. I eventually went in to a year long honeymoon period and, all I needed was 3 units of long acting Insulin. After that I sadly had to ramp up the dose of both short and long acting insulin. This period gave the opportunity to learn a lot with good help from my remaining Beta cells. I ended up healthier than before as I was forced to make better choices. I some times think it is unfair that I have to take my blood sugar in to account in all situations. However when I am on top of the glucose management I can live my life to the fullest.

Properly assessing your basal rate is crucial for doing this. You want your basal to keep you steady while fasting, which is what basal should be doing anyway, and no more than that! And you NEED some insulin to cover that protein! This was more like "ketovore", and that's ok. But making sure you are not overbasalized and figuring out then how much bolus for protein you need will work the best.

Have you had your C-Peptide done yet? An adult onset T1D (LADA) woman may have some insulin function of her own. This would make it more possible to skip insulin during a carnivore day. I was a child-onset T1D, and my C-Peptide was zero when tested just a few years ago. So a T1D might reduce but not eliminate insulin with carnivore / low carb. Thank you for your story, and keep at it!

It's crazy how low's can affect one so differently. Not always the same. I've been in the 40's and feel like I'm doing just fine. My biggest issue is rebounding high. Time and time again I'm treating a low and still dropping so I treat some more and then rebound going up arrow 45 minutes later and having to walk or dump insulin on it. Grrrr! You taking 2 glucose tablets and walking at 70 guessing saved you with a nice 87 at the end.

I’m so glad you touched on the humbleness of T1D persons…..it’s a whole new forced perspective on life, and it comes with a lot of mental and physical sacrifices. I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 3 weeks ago. For the last 5 years I was told I had type 2 diabetes. When I was unable to control my blood sugar with food and metfromin, my doctor told me to just keep trying. I pushed her into doing blood tests on me, which she was very reluctant to do. After all the tests were done, she told me I was probably missed diagnosed. But I'm actually not sure. My l ife is turned upside down. The people I have told that I have it, seem to think its not big deal. It is a huge deal to me. Even my husband doesnt really understand, but he is trying. I feel depressed today. I've been keeping a good mental attitude, but today I feel the weight of my diagnosis. I'm going over to Europe in a week, and I'm scared. I've been watching videos which is how I found you. The past 5 years I have been living low carb since my mom was a type 2, I didn't want to travel the same route. Fat chance! This is worse! What was absolutely new to me is the connection to other autoimmune deseases.
