Oak Mountain Acotts
Канада
Добавлен 28 ноя 2020
The Oak Mountain Acotts are living the dream on a 500-acre woodlot in New Brunswick, Canada. After purchasing an abandoned homestead in 1996, we have continuously worked to bring the property back to a productive state focusing on woodlot and forestry management and making the most of the natural resources available to us.

Hardwood Revenue as a Commodity vs Value Added Firewood - How Much Do We Earn? -E196

In this video, we thought that we would break down our hourly pay from our hardwood operations. Does it make sense to spend our time cutting and selling to the mill or should we value add the hardwood into firewood right here on the property and sell it? We are using the Kubota B2601 and the Kranman T1750 hydraulic timber trailer to yard some wood today while we run the numbers! Important Note:...

Portable Saw Mill Basics - Learning to Saw Lumber with the Vallee Big Red Portable Sawmill -E170
Having to keep the box drives me crazy i've got a whole room full of boxes that I can't throw away because if I do I can't get something replaced
Hi Jason I'm from north of Fredericton and I've worked in the woods most of my life I also was a part of the Maritime forest ranger school trail cutting crew back in the 90's. I find when knotchjng and falling a tree I leave a bit of wood on my back cut until everything is ready to go then pull the saw out and cut the little bit off the back This prevents you from becoming saw bound. It also allows for you to be able to put a wedge in . Give it a try. Love your videos neighbour!
Thank you!
Nice work but why bring 5 litres of saw oil to the woods? Buy a combi fuel/oil can.
I have one now! Nice jugs…
i love mine and so dose my blueheeler
That’s awesome! I’m saving up for something else… still undecided…
Haven't seen you guys in a while, hope every thing is ok
We’re all fine… taking a major break from RUclips though!
@OakMountainAcotts thank for letting me know
Thank you for the video. I recently received one of these and wanted to learn a bit more about it. New Sub!
Let me know how you make out with it.
@@OakMountainAcotts just shot some video on it. I may have received a bad one. Arbor has a mile of runout!
Where is your local dealer located / phone number please
The dealer is in Nova Scotia, Canada. You can Google them at Hant’s Equipment.
Exactly it saves time and definitely money by using the chain longer instead of throwing away
It sure does…
Absolute great video
Thanks!
Exalant video I'm getting one
Thanks!
I love Camso tracks, had them on a Can Am max Outlander and a Ranger. Hated getting stranded by them way out in the bush. Antirotation bars are really wimpy.
I always cringe when I see someone, especially someone who cuts a lot, not using any safety gear (I worked in emergency medicine for over 25 years). No chaps, no eye, no hearing protection.
Thanks for the reminder
Years later...watching...better than any machine or property/ equipment..,.a dad.🇺🇸🇨🇦
My Dad is my best friend!
It's good that you can see the big picture, most people do not!
Thanks. It seems like a good sideline for us!
I recall a forestry safety expett addressing a group of hobbyists on the surprisingly high proportion of severe left-hand and arm injuries amongst chainsaw operators. His analysis was simple , the split-second human instinct to reach out and deflect an unexpected object is so fast that we can't discerm between a twig, a flailing chain or in your example, a falling timber. Thanks for the reminder for constant vigilance. Too many RUclips videos contain reckless bravado and any constructive criticism is answered with muttered allusions to 'Freem'... great video👍
Thanks for this. Things happen fast and there is a lot of energy to contend with… it was a reminder for me that’s for sure!
Great video, Canuck ingenuity at its best. 🇨🇦👍.... only issue with the standard Karen 1.0 Model is that they need to be housed in heated buildings year-round and re-sale value tends to collapse at year 50. Often worth keeping the vintage models, however, as the scrappage costs are financially and environmentally ruinous 😊
Classic… thanks for watching!
Do you do sticker trades if so I will willing to trade with you
can we plane it, if the cedar is knotty? (wood from Home Depot)
I would say yes but always a risk that a knot may break loose. Especially if it is close to an edge.
Mine works well but leaks oil and will empty a full tank all over your garage and vehicle
Agreed. Not overly impressed with the leaky bar oil system.
Looking to buy one, what is the overall quality of this sharpener?
I don’t have any other brands to compare it to but I feel it is of good construction and the price is right.
The gas spout will swell up over a few years and stop working.
Hopefully they sell replacement spouts. I really like this jug!
ln Boreal forest areas, Birch is the go-to (white) But Birch needs a season to sit to get the most out of it. Not everyone is near Birch stands as well, Larch offers good BTU (not Tamarack, Larch) But alot like Birch, not everyone is near Larch or Birch stands. So majority of firewood for Boreal'ers ends up being lodgepole or jack pine. I guess white, engel, sitka spruces and doug fir are okay to burn if the wood condition is not great for other utilization, but man l wouldnt want to be burning things like black spruce or balsam, just because of their annoyingly longer drying, and more tinge residues they leave behind. Aspen? Well aspen has alot of issue indeed with quality, the BTU of course disappointing.
Interesting to hear about what others are using for firewood. We have been using the left over sawmill slabwood (spruce/fir) for our maple syrup boiler this year. Seems to work pretty well but you need to tend the fire quite often!
Great video!
Thanks for watching!
You should check out Alstor harvesters
They look really good. I priced a combo unit at the dealer in Canada and they wanted $180,000!!!!
Snob is a good word, selling firewood I've had comments on loads about " ugly wood " trees dont grow square or perfect dont stack perfect after splitting you get what you pay for!! you want cheap you dont get sugar Maple, you want green thats what you get, customer is always right .... but .... I hear, this time i want DRY WOOD! only to find wood i delivered a year ago un stacked right where i dumped it on ground, I burn anything days save the best for nights, I cant cut sell what i dont have,, some customer want only eastern hornbeam .....ironwood hard to come by, or cherry ? or white birch, I have birch split and small rounds stacked and covered at least 6 years old no rot, leave it on ground in weather wont last long, customer is ALWAYS right ...... even thou .....🤔
I think that as electricity rates continue to increase, more people will be less selective on the types of firewood they are willing to burn. I'm going to trial some different offerings this year at different prices. My best firewood to be sorted, then pure white birch, then spruce and fir that will not go to the mill and offer each grade of firewood at different prices...
I have exact same unit, but can't yet figure out how to change to English, and Fahrenheit
Not sure I'll be able to help you out there... will the company respond to an e-mail? Sorry!
@@OakMountainAcotts no problem, I was able to find solution. All set now
Great tractor I have l3560 I had to re wire seat switch to run winch out side the cab because of PTO safety switch
Thanks. That safety switch is a pain. I need to figure out how to bypass it as well.
Nice video and a good argument for having multiple saws! For me personally, the 30cc saw gets used for trimming, 40cc and 50cc for limbing up to around 16” and 60cc and 70cc for big stuff. I love the power to weight ratio of the 50cc saws and they can cut just about anything. The nice thing about big saws is running long bars. They get heavy (Echo 7310 fueled and oiled with a 28” bar is 21.4 pounds) but I don’t have to bend over as much.
I can’t muscle the big saw around for long. I’m a 50cc man!
what is the ash borer situation in the maritime provinces?
We haven’t seen any noticeable impacts in Southern NB. Not sure of the status in other provinces. We are taking some ash now to limit impact in the future.
You did an amazing job with your video, thank you. I think I will be getting me a set for my RTV-XG850 sidekick. I was looking for a video that shows how to install a set of tracks. Is it hard? How long does it take?
Hi, the track installation isn’t easy. They come off quicker than they go on but for me, installation in the Fall was a 4 hour job. We have since traded our RTV on a tractor. How do you like the 850?
@@OakMountainAcotts I like it so far, only had it for a little over a year. I pushed quite a bit of snow last winter with it and didn’t have any issues with it. I want tracks on it for hunting elk in the snow.
@glenolson8640 doesn’t sound like you are close to us or I would sell you my set!
Hiya i think exhaust should always be routed down from heater.🤔🎯🇬🇧🍻
Good feedback, thank you!
Super
Thanks for watching!
People who bash the horsepower have no idea what they are talking about. Diesel power is known for its torque not hp. Many manufacturers keep them at 25 horse because if they go more than that EPA says it must have DEF. So if they upped power you would then pay even more and complain about def lol. I imagine that the power ratings are understated to skirt these laws much like muscle cars back in the day!!!
They are nice machines but with tracks on in fresh snow, it could use a little help!
That trailer would work pretty good with my tractor since it has the backhoe attachment and is already plumbed for doing most of what that boom does. Neat little trailer.
It works really well. Handles about 1/2 cord and has been very reliable over the last 5 years for us.
I'm surprised you've got rid of the kabota RV. T. I'm thinking of buying one. Any problem with it❤❤
The Kubota was well built. Loved the factory cab with AC and heat. Very heavy machine and got stuck more easily than it should have. Limited on speed and a bit under powered with the tracks on it. Make sure you try one out before you buy it! I got a good trade in value and thought that money would be better served as a tractor for our operation. Hope this helped.
@@OakMountainAcotts Thank you for your very nice reply
I see you were blessed with the thorough detail gene. I wish I’d o’ had that one, too. I got the handsome devil gene, which is nice, but I’m always slipping on oil slicks, and am trying to figure out were I set my tools down. Great video.
Ha ha… a blessing and a curse! I think I’d sooner be handsome! Thanks for watching…
Are you sure that's a Farmi? Looks more like a Fransguard. Where did you get the saw holders? Great videos.
Not really sure what it is :) A few of the guys on here told me it was a Farmi! Very reliable old winch, whatever it is! I built the saw holders out of 2x6 with 1x1 dividers to allow the bar to slip in. Thanks for watching!
If you just buy the top half it fits any tool
For sure. These are just like a dremmel tool that you can buy at a big box store with multiple attachments. Thanks for watching!
Hello jason Just just found out about your youtube chanel some weeks ago and was looking at your videos. Very interesting stuff. Sorry for my english i am in Qc, near Gatineau otttawa region. We just got a 270 acres and i am planing to exploite our land like you do. Could talk to you for hours about this project of yours and also mine. About this video you did on big decisions to make. I think you should keep it small but efficient as possible on every aspect. Keep the kranman and kubota tractor. Your best machine and simple methode to harvest trees is this. Kubota excavator 040 or 057 size. Buy a rotating tree shear and of you go. In the comfort of your cabine you will be able to harvest wood anytime anywhere. Those kubota are real work horse. Tree shear for a 057 excavator can cut trees in seconde and take them down real fast and easy. You can use it as a grapple. Only to cylinders and a blade. You can cut trees to 10 inches with those. Complet with a good set of buckets and your roads and trails will be in top shape in no time. I made 8km of roads and trails in one summer on weekends. Roads i can go with my truck no problem there. I got a auger and brush cutter for my excavator and there is nothing you cant do. Very efficient way to work and kubota excavator are the best period. Could go on and on. I am new to this internet, youtube thing. Give me a email so i can write to you, send pictures of what i mean about tree shear etc. Keep up the good work💪👍
Hi Jeff thanks for the note. Sounds like your woodlot is set up nice! You can find our e-mail in the about section on our channel. I don’t want to post it in a comment! Would love to see your setup. Take care, Jason
In watching your videos, it seems like you handle the logs a lot for just making firewood. Have you considered getting something like a Halverson processor for the front of a tracked skidsteer? Then you could cut/split the logs in the woods directly into IBC totes and save hauling the logs out, stacking them, reloading them on the forwarder, and unloading them onto the processor table?
I’ve seen those in action and they look impressive. Our bottleneck here is currently wood availability. I can’t buy logs (everything is going to the pulp mill) and I don’t want to clear cut my lot. So, we’re just working away. Thanks for watching!
My heater sometimes gives me an E01 error. I have to start it again. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. I suspect it is because of the 10 amp limit of the DC. Is there something I can doe? (Thicker cables or something)
I haven't seen that error. I'm not an electrician but I didn't plug my unit into the DC side of my power pack. I bought a 110V to 12V converter on amazon and wired it up to plug into the AC side of my power pack which gives me the 15 amp requirement.
I’ve seen a neat idea before to lift and lower a drag to put a ski at the front and a hand crank trailer jack, but yours is a nice setup too with the three point hitch
That’s a good idea! Lots of ways to do it I guess. Thanks for watching!
I have the newer consumer version of this and it’s great. Power axe.. highly recommend
Awesome! Can’t beat them….
Looking good, kubota color next 👌
We’ll see what we can do!
😅😅😅😅😅
Hope you liked the video!
That should work just fine in your trails. I am curious to see how it will handle deep fresh snow. I like the way the front of it is done to deviate from any obstacle (ex. tree, stump). I wonder why the coupler is attached like that to the tongue. It seems it goes through a small section, and most likely, it's intended to be like so. I also like the turn buckle for adjustment. I am assuming from the cab, you don't see much how the groomer works because of the winch being in the way, isn't it? Lucky you have snow. For the few inches we got so far, it usually melts within a week. We are still on the grass, which is very unusual for us. Thanks!
Hi, the coupler is on a bolt and nut so that it can roll a bit if needed. Probably the weak point of the drag though. I can’t see much through the winch screen but I guess it will protect my glass if I get to wild yarding wood! Your winch seems to be working well. I love the idea of having a remote control. Take care, Jason.
Hi Jason glad to see you back. Do you think your setup would pack the snow enough for fat biking?
Once the base is established I’m sure it would. I am hauling 1/2 cord of wood out behind the B2601 regularly so it should be fine.
@@OakMountainAcotts great tks
Hey there Jason! I hope you're doing well and the winter has been kind to ya. Great video show the snow drag!
Hi Sandy! It was an easy Winter here in NB with little snow and not many days of -20 temperatures. Dad and I watch your channel. Congrats on your continued success! Thanks for stopping by, Jason.
Good job Works great.
Thanks Larry!
good to see you guys back at it....been a little while. Wow, some very nice ideas with those mods. I really like how you offset the drag to the right of the tractor, allowing you to widen the trail while driving safely in the center of the trail. Here in the Outaouais, QC, we are having some crazy weather. It has been fairly mild with little snow however, last night and tonight going down to -25C but then warming up in the next few days to +13C with some rain. Wonder what effect this will have on the sugaring season. Have a good one
Hi Yves, we had to take a little break! Supposed to warm up here as well this week. We are going to tap tomorrow but is about two weeks sooner than normal. Up to Montreal last weekend and took in a hockey game! Take care, Jason.
