The Chianti Road : European Roadtrip Part 4 through Tuscany, Italy
Просмотров 2147 месяцев назад
One of my favourite roads in the world - the sinuous, smooth, warm and fast Chianti Road that stretches from Florence to Sienna. We take a Jaguar F-Type on a Sunday morning hoon that is a non-stop smile factory through Tuscany into Umbria, Italy. This is part of a series routing us through Germany on the Romantische Strasse, across the Alps into Italy including the Stelvio, the Chianti Road and...

SWCP Ep.8 Port Isaac to Polzeath & Padstow

Things start to get easier as we reach the Camel River for these last days of hiking the South West Coast Path for the season. We base ourselves at the Molseworth Arms in Wadebridge, making use of the buses to start walks from Port Isaac (Day 22) and then Polzeath to Padstow (Day 23) across a day and a half.
SWCP Ep.7 Tintagel to Port Isaac

Reputedly one of the most strenuous sections so we break it down to be a little more manageable! We'd ended our last walk doing a short stretch from Tintagel to Treknow and pick it up again staying overnight at Trebarwith Strand before heading onto Port Gaverne and Port Isaac with a reasonable 7 miler.

An easy pair of hikes when returning to the coast path at Bude and heading to Widemouth / Crackington Haven. A short one to start, ideal after you've travelled down, then a slightly longer one to retune the leg muscles. Just a note: Rothenburg odT WAS bombed during the war, but the main damage was to the eastern parts of the city and it was obviously not that badly damaged. It is a wonderful city, though maybe overloaded with tourists. Pity that you seem to have missed Dinkelsbühl on your way to Nördlingen. I hiked from Würzburg to Austria, large parts along the Romantic road and loved this slow way of experiencing the countryside. It is not for everyone, certainly not if you are pressed for time but as I am retired that was not a problem. Btw, "ö" and "o" are pronounced differently. "ö" is more like the vowel i "church" and "ü" is the German "y", like in "mystery". This will help you with names like Nördlingen and Füssen.

Another great trip - thanks for sharing, really enjoyong your progress. So, did you know that that smell was seals or did you realise only when you saw them? What do seals smell like? My assumption is fishy and salty. Would be great to add smell to sight and sound.

@DarrellMinards yes right before Godrevy Lighthouse but it's well highlighted by all the signs saying to be quiet for the seals - without which, I imagine, very few would bother looking. I missed the one you found - I will save for next time I pass through!

'Greatest location for a YH'. A debate in its own right. I suspect that the Glen Affric YH would have something to say about that. 3 hours walk from the nearest car park. Surrounded by Munros. No Wifi, no phone reception. Idyllic. Gairloch sands YH might lay claim to the best view. Having said that, the Tintagel one does look a great location.

Good question Mark, we do use OS but on both our phones via a subscription. I use OS on my PC to plan each sector to get accurate views on the amount of climbing and length on a given day (you can set your own speed settings!) and these routes are then automatically on the OS phone app. It's saved us a couple of times including our walk from Crackington. Generally the route is very well signposted, but some sections less so and knowing via GPS that we're off track has saved us. We've never had a problem with battery and this isn't the mountains (where I'd definitely have a paper back up) and it's worked really well. You can see all traditional OS maps as well as other views. Have a great time planning your walk...we've been loving it.

I'm enjoying these posts. Have you had to use an OS map at any point? It looks like the path is very clear, well signed, and the obvious aid of the sea. As a hill walker my instinct is to always carry one, but when I do the SWCP in September, I'm tempted to not take one.

One place I'd definitely recommend is the fish and chip shop selling fried halibut in Homer. Early mornings we often struggled to find anywhere open for a cooked breakfast so be prepared with a back up especially heading u[p the Yukon.

Good point. Its not bad provided you fill up in the main towns. Up through BC was easy and then again enough stops across to Whitehorse. The run up to Dawson City needed filling up before starting the Top of the World highway but from there an easy run to Tok and then onto the end. The truck was thristy (10mpg) but a big enough tank that we never got anxious about making a fuel stops. I think its harder between Sept and April but the main season is all good. Good luck

Your taste in music is NOT my taste in music. What made it necessary? The scenery doesn’t need it.

Appreciate your comment...cant please everyone for sure as everyone has their own taste in what they like. The sound without music is just a relentless road roar and rattling of the truck which was pretty tough to listen to. I'd originally made the video just for myself and my friend Russell, but when I came to edit it back I couldnt break apart the soundtrack in the editing suite. Now I'm going for a more neutral soundtrack on newer videos I'm doing.

Thanks for your video it was a nice trip down memory lane for me! In 1999 when we drove round trip from Los Angeles, Ca to the Alaskan Highway then Homer, I didn't have a digital camera or Samsung Galaxy cell phone like today, back then all of our still pictures were taken with good ol' Kodak film!

In 1999 my Wife, Daughter and I drove our new Chevy S10 with Cab over Camper, (with a street legal Honda Mini Trail 70 strapped on the front bumper), to Homer Alaska all the way up and back on the Alaskan Highway from Granada Hills, California traveling over 7000 miles total. It was a trip of a lifetime and as awesome as it was, once is enough! Maybe now in 2021 they paved the 2000 miles of dirt road that we drove on in 1999!

I loved his commentary. Short, and to the point.
