Seems basically traditional grip with a more flexible positioning of the thumb…
I don’t think it’s just the thumb. It looks like something he is doing with his ring finger and pinkie gives him a more snare-like ability to articulate.

Where did you buy the sheet music?
I found this piece when I was a freshman in high school and now I'm a sophomore in college. I was suddenly reminded of it and had to come back. This is still one of my favorite compositions of all time, and I'm a music major. I listened to it so many times in high school I still remember exactly how it goes. Thank you so much for writing this masterpiece. Cheers.
